Advanced Potty Training techniques

My in-laws had a lab that was trained to go to the bathroom in shrubs and planting. He rarely went in the grass. Their yard was lined with Hoestas and thats where he went. I would take him for a walk and he would go right over to a bush or planting around a tree and go. Does anyone know what this training is called and where I can get infromation on training my dog this way. My father in-law said he had a professional trained do it over 15 years ago while the lab was being gun trained.

when I was reading about training pups before I got mine, it suggested you take them to the same location every time, and give them a command. If that location was in the shrubs, would that have done it? We told our girls to "go to the brown lounge" (my boyfriend came up with it) and they now only want to poop in that part of the lawn. Makes clean up pretty easy if you only have to look in the one area.
I have a similiar question. My boyfriend is getting a new puppy. He lives with his parents in an apartment. He works from morning to afternoon, so the dog will spend more time with his parents... they are odd people, their actual dogs is the worst trained in the world... he pees and poops inside the house, and he eats everything they eat. I don´t want this puppy to be like that, but I don´t know what to do. I´m even thinking on telling my boyfriend I can puppysit his dog while he´s at work, but that way, the pup will get used to my house and not his...
I really don´t know what to do. :?

ugh; what a tough situation. Your boyfriend's pup will grow to do exctly what the other dogs do, if he's left in that environment. Afterall; the pup wil be part of "the pack", so will follow pack protocols. Including peeing and pooping in the house.

Seriously? Your boyfriend might want to re-considier getting a puppy until he has a place of his own.
