Adobe Photoshop blues

Anyone here adept at Photoshop? I would love to figure this program out but it's eluding me. I think I could "get it" if I could see someone's finished results with a step-by-step method telling me how they got there. Right now the layers thing is completely eluding me.

Thanks!

Best recommendation is to purchase Adobe's "Classroom in a Book". This will take you step-by-step and give you a great understanding.

Also you may want to consider joining NAPP. http://www.photoshopuser.com/ It's about $100/yr but they offer a lot of discounted CD tutorials & classes, you'll have access to all of their tutorials on their web site plus you get a subscription to their mag which has a lot of how to's.
Plus you can get a free email subscription to these guys which occasionally offer how-to's http://www.creativepro.com/ + Adobe.com offers tutorials, forums, etc.
Adobe used to be so easy to use. I hate the layers too...can't figure it out but have no time for my photos right now either."sigh"
I have CS2 but never bothered to learn it so can't help but just google PS tutorials , lots are free and there is all kinds out there :D
I don't know if this will help you in what you're trying to do, but here goes.

Photoshop creates layers when you do certain things, like add text to a photo. There is a layers navigation panel that will allow you to work on a specific layer at a time, such as to edit the text you've entered.

If the layers have you down and you don't need them to be separate in the final product (ie it's ok to be in a jpg format), click on "layers -> flatten image" and you'll only have one layer... but you won't be able to edit your text and so forth. If you continue to work, you may still create more layers, but you can continue to flatten as necessary.
Hi - let me know exactly what you want to do! I used to be a graphic designer many moons ago and know what the program can and can't do - which version of PS are you using? :)
Emily, I'm very good with Photoshop but I try to do a few online tutorials every week to learn new techniques that I'm interested in. I find that to be incredibly helpful even though I've been using PS for many years since there's always something new to learn or a better way to do something. Just do a Google search for what you want to do + tutorial and you'll find a lot of step-by-step stuff.

Most of the time, on most basic photo enhancement, you'll really have very little reason to have too many layers. One thing to always do, though: always keep a layer of your original. As soon as you start a project, duplicate the background layer, make the background layer invisible and then start working that way you'll always able to go back.
Why not just a backup of the original/source file?
I'm not being snippy, I'm wondering if there's a reason.
i'm also fairly adept at photoshop. I'm a graphic designer/I\illustrator and avid photographer. Let me know how I can help!
wow - so much knowledge!!!! I wonder what other talents lie within the average oes.org community? Maybe we should make a list!
OK so how should I make a plea for an oes.org logo?

Some sort of begging?
Some sort of contest?

Because it's easier to have the original as a layer so you can just turn it on and off within the file that you're working in, especially if you're making minute changes and want to overlay the original for comparison.

Backing up the source file is always a good idea, too and I probably should have mentioned that. I was just thinking in terms of actually working on the file and having it fast and easy to access.

Maybe a new thread?
WOW thanks everyone for the advice! If you are adept at PS I'd love to see a project you've done and then a step-by-step process of how you got there. I'm currently using PS 6 and I'm going to head to the library for some of the suggested books, too.

Thanks for the offer Millthumpian!! I didn't have a certain project in mind, I was just taking some of my photos and experimenting with them to see what the program offers. So suggestions are good, too! Thanks everyone, and I bet something comes out of this, Ron, now that a graphics design major knows . . .
Emily, if you could describe what you want to do, maybe we can suggest some online resources for you.
Emily the best way to learn photoshop is to play with it and when you get to something you can't work out how to do press the help button - it solves 99% of problems. Happy photoshopping and let us see the results.

deviant art has some great digital artists and they explain how to get the results and even if you just type into google "painting eyes" that will lead you to some fabby tutorials to do

If you want to find out about filters and effects or just plain old retouching images - type in what you want to do - no doubt someone has done it before and wants to tell everyone - so there's no reinventing the wheel.
:go:

I think a contest is a great idea! you could request submissions, and pick the top 3 ( or 5, or whatever) that you like best, and then have a poll and let people pick!

Or you could just decide on which you like. Thats good too.
