Hair Cuts

I have decided not to take Zoe back to the groomers for a while. She bit someone there.
I am going to let her hair grow out for the winter. I do want to be able to see her eyes. Any suggestions on how to cut her?
I tried it a few weeks ago-well she looked awful!! Her hair is fortunately growing quickly and her eyes and bad cut are now gone.

I have no idea how people manage to cut the hair there without poking the dogs eyes out , nor do i know how some manage to do such a nice job! LOL
One member here trims her own dogs hair around his eyes and it looks wonderful, WizardMerlin is the member... perhaps she will post some instructions. :)
When mine were younger, I trimmed the eyes....I would use a fine tooth comb and would put it between the eyes and trim in front of the comb, it protects the eyes that way. I hope that makes visual sense...LOL.
I would recommend getting someone else to hold the head just for when they wiggle. Hope that helps.
Stormi and co.
I have always done my sheepies. I use a comb and cut the hair right above the eye brow I cut it short then take a layer of hair behind that and cut it a bit longer then the first layer and so on. My hand is behind the scissor so I don't cut the dog. The hair under the eye I cut short and then blend it into the snoot. I do it when the dog is tired too they will sit longer.
I also do Drez's cuts. Many moons ago I was a hairdresser, so it comes easy to me. Drez is a WONDERFUL dog to trim. She gets a little antsy after about 45 minutes, but for the most part, she's a peach. 8) As for the eyes, I keep them cut even between the haircuts. I just have to be able to see those beautiful eyes, one brown and one blue. She sits still as a stone and I keep my hand under the scissors. She's so used to having no hair in her eyes that when it does get a bit too long, she starts bumping into things. :?

When we got our first sheepie 25 years ago, we asked the vet if their eyes were truly so sensitive to light that the hair had to stay long (which is what we had heard), or if they really could see through all the hair. His answer, word for word, stays with me to this day - if you had all that hair in front of your eyes, could YOU see? Dumb question from dumb first time owners, I'm sure he was thinking! From that day on, we tied Buford's hair up in a pony tail.

When you cut your dogs fur on the face you have to hold their muzzle, if your dog bit the groomer, I would first get her used to you holding her muzzle for a short time over a few weeks before attempting to cut the fur. Perhaps a TDF(to die for treat) would be in order for good staying while you are holding the muzzle. You dont want your dog to be afraid.

I cut Merlin's fur over his eyes regularly. He stays perfectly still when grooming, even if I don't use the grooming table! I am used to cutting hair as I cut all 4 of my upright kids hair. First I have blunt tip, curved scissors, I trim little by little in between the eyes. Merlin's is particularly easy to do as he has a mask over each eye, so I kind of just follow the lines  I find that hair is the worst for growing over the eyes. I also thin the hair on the muzzle a bit near the eyes. For the fur on the head, over the eyes I use thinning scissors. Just little by little clip away, take lots of breaks, look at the dog, see where more needs doing. And most of all relax, if you are nervous your dog will sense this and they will be too.
And most of all...don't fret if you make a mistake, as we all know, in 2 weeks time, no one will ever be able to tell your dog had a hair cut! LOL!
Thanks everybody!
She enjoys getting brushed and knows she gets treats afterwards. Tonight after some playtime we will sit down and give her a better hair cut!
She looks so funny right now-no eyes and the rest of her head looks like she stuck her paw in a light socket!
I will let you know how it goes.
I use thinning shears on the hair covering their eyes - so it isn't all cut - but thin enough that they can see through it (well, I do this for Sydney anyway - Presley's hair is covering her eyes).

I also trim the hair between their eyes (carefully) - also using the thinning shears.

I'm not a fan of the bang look myself.
I TOOK MAXIMOOSE to the groomer for the first time in July I had been taking care of him myself...but it just got away from me....It's can be a challenge to take care of him. His head and belly got matted and I said "just shave him down". It's very hot and humid here in July. I tried the clippers myself and he just went nuts. NOTHING LIKE HOLDING DOWN 80 LBS. OF RAW PUPPY ENERGY MYSELF. Anyway....the ladies at the groomer were wonderful. He went in looking like a wooly BEAST and came out looking like a skinny poodle. We laughed for hours. The funniest thing was it took two to groom him and even a third when they got to his face. one to hold him still....one to clip and one lady to HOLD HIS TONGUE STILL!! It's a miracle he didn't have "it shaved off". His tongue is too long for his mouth and when it isn't planting big wet ones on your face......it's always hanging out!!
