OES (Wendy) available in Brooklyn, NY

Just an update on the OES that we just sprung out of a Southern NJ shelter. She is now resting comfortably at her foster home.

She is a victim of neglect. She is much more frail than expected, along with some skin allergies that her foster home is trying to help heal. Her back legs are week, because of absolutely no muscle. (Vet said that he thinks she was either tied or kenneled most of her life with no exercise and the foster home is going to try to build muscle back up too.) Not sure how old she is really. I'm guessing around the age of 9...

On the PLUS side, she is super sweet. Loves people and seems to be getting along well with another dog that lives in the foster home. She is very easy to handle, didn't fuss at all when I bathed & dried her, cleaned ears, etc.

Here is a photo of Wendy at the shelter:

If anyone can think of a permanent home for her, she is really laid back and would be a great companion. Please contact Southeastern Old English Rescue Network http://www.oesrescuenetwork.org/

How exciting for Wendy!
I am so happy---her story has been going on and on.......
YIPPPEEEE
Hugs to you all and Wendy
She really is beautiful...can see her potential. Wendy is going to make someone very happy who is looking for a sweet sheepie girl. Thank you for the update.
Poor baby.

Unfortunately muscle mass loss starts happening in days and even a supremely fit dog can be diminished to almost her state in a frightening short period of time - months, not years. Most regular vets don't seem to understand this or they wouldn't prescribe complete crate rest so casually for each and every little thing.

At nine it's going to be that much harder to regain the muscle mass, but there are a number of exercises that can be done, some stationary (I spent months manually moving Mad's legs when she was paralyzed) -- if there is a rehab type facility anywhere nearbye, or recommend this to her new home, it could really pay off to get some help by a canine PT person (actually, they're not permitted to use the title PT unless certified for humans, but I forget what the correct term is for animal PTs) It doesn't have to be a huge committment - just have them show someone how to perform these exercises as well as stretching and so on. Though ideally an underwater treadmill would be great. Swimming is wonderful on some levels, but tends to build up the front more than the rear.

Even the basic exercises, in addition to walking her carefully and so on, can make a huge difference in her quality of life and though progress can be slow it's immensely satisfying. Wish I was closer.

Kristine
Poor baby. I'm so glad you were able to get her into a foster home. Rebuilding that muscle is going to take some time to be sure. Thank goodness she's found some kind folks to help her. :D
She needs a play buddy :D
Thanks so much to everyone
who's helping this special girl.
poor baby.....yup...needs a playmate to help her with those legs.....actually being alone with some short walks is probably better..then work up to playdates!
The foster home has a young black russian terrier.
black russian terrier rescue was kind enough to share a foster home with us.
Isn't it wonderful when rescues work together? :D

The foster dad has written this about wendy & his dog violet;

· She and Violet are fine together
· She seems to be smiling more after an hour or so here in the apartment
· She has found both of Violet’s beds and has made herself at home on both! In fact, has made it on her own to the back bedroom and is quite comfortable on that bed as you can see in pic #6
· She has started to follow me around in the house and enjoys me petting her…
· She likes to look out the windows into the park in our living room.

Pls help us find a forever home for wendy!
Just want to show everyone how much brighter Wendy is looking just in a couple of days at the foster's home.

Wendy looks so happy and what pretty eyes she has , hope she finds a furever home soon :D
the pic of wendy says it all
This email & photos brought tears to my eyes, David has done wonders with Wendy in only 3 days! Wendy is so worth adopting! Please everyone help find this girl a forever home! Feel free to cross-post her info.

Hi Susan,

Just wanted to give you the latest….

· Wendy is a breakout artist! Today we left her in the house from 11am till 3ish… she was in “her bathroom” with a gate setup so that it couldn’t be pushed out… we came home to find the gate down (an inside job).. and lovely miss Wendy sitting on the living room floor enjoying herself watching the hipsters walking in and out of the park across the street!! (I guess we have found that we can leave her loose in the house) ..
· When I take her out for walks.. she now stops at everyone who is walking up or by to check them out.. I think meeting humans on the street is a new thing for her…
· We get consistent wags of the tail now… a smile.. and a desire to be in the room we are in…. before, she wouldn’t relax… now she is starting to enjoy the “chill” life!
· She is eating… seems to be able to hold it a long time before she tinkles… likes grass for #2s (and we only have a slice that is about a foot wide and 15 feet long….and it is mostly gravel) … so needless to say.. going out can be trying..
· She is down to 9 seconds to drop herself down vs. the 12 before
· She has a taste for nice shoes (well…only one.. but Libby had left it on the ground out in the open… it was a perfect target!)
· She is very sweet and loves attention of any sort…
· Her “step” has picked up a bit… so I think that she is responding well to good dog food and exercise… she even tried to play or at least be involved with other dogs at the dog park yesterday.
· Violet is indifferent to her except when she is going for her food…. (to be expected)
· Her skin seems to be improving.. I think the issues were more from the matted hair than anything else…she does lick her paws a bit and the inside between her rear legs… hopefully, the good food will help that.

Sooooo.. I hope this gives you some for ammo to talk about her with… again.. anyone looking for a well mannered low key dog should not look any further…David

Wow, I got the last note but didn't see the pics of her laying on her foster sister! So SWEET!!
She looks so much happier!
How fun to see her real personality shining through. :D
Oh she is so beautiful and that picture of her with her new "friend" is so cute. Thank goodness for the wonderful people taking care of her!!
:ghug:
to her and her foster parents!!
Great news and Wendy seems to be right at home in that last picture
Thank you for fostering Wendy....it is amazing what a little TLC can do for a dog and turn them around in such a short period of time. You can see the sparkle in Wendy's eyes.

I love the shot of Violet, she is so beautiful. My Violet (OES) said to plz give her a "rub" from her name sake. lol
OOOOHHHH - She is so cute. Someone should want to snap her up and take good care of her. She would make a great best friend.
New update on Wendy, she keeps getting better & better.
FYI, I am not fostering her, David in Brooklyn NY is. He is the best :hearts:

Sue,

· Wendy has been doing quite well… she sleeps in our bedroom on the floor without any noises!
· She tends to follow us around and wants to be in the same room.
· Her skin is improving but she still licks on the inside of her hind legs.
· No matter what… she is a low key dog… sometimes, it seems that she can’t see as her direction around doors can be slow to react..(or maybe she isn’t use to doors!!)

david
Will David keep her forever? or just until she finds a new home? She is adorable...
David would like Wendy to have a home of her own.
I bet Wendy would like to stay w/ David :D

Wendy is so sweet she would be perfect for almost any loving home.
I do think a low key home would be best. She does have lots of love to give

:hearts:
Any help for Wendy needed ASAP!
Foster home wants her out ASAP!
What a mess!!!
I don't want Wendy to suffer for humans messing up!
Me especially :(

My husband is gravely ill & in hosp. I will be there most of the day & evening.

I am thinking boarding or ??????????????

Any ideas welcome. Guess I screwed this one up :(

HELP!!!!
Hi,
I would be more than willing to pick her up in Brooklyn and transport her, however I am unable to foster as one of my two charmers is dog aggressive and would not tolerate her in the house. But, if I can be of help in any other way PM me and I will do what I can.
Kathie
pm you
Sue, please don't beat yourself up.
You can't predict the future nor what other people will do.

You have always thought of the dog first and foremost...
many would never have had a chance if you hadn't
taken steps to get him/her to safety. This may just be a
side trip for Wendy in getting her in the right home.

I can help with some limited funds if it will help keep her safe.
Let me know...

Hugs to you during this very difficult time~

Hi Sue
Wendy is still around becuase, you worked so hard to save her to begin with!
Take care of yourself and your husband.
Let me know if I can help.
I still think she is the same girl we were working on in January.
Call me if you need anything, I will have my cell at work with me
Kathy
Oh Sue please don't doubt yourself
You have helped to save many sheepies, mostlies, neardies
In rescue a crystal ball would come in handy 8)
Not sure what I can do for Wendy from afar>>just a bit of $
If you must get her out immediatedly & boarding is the only option

Maybe someone will step up & give Wendy a loving place
to rest her sweet head
Until her furever people find her!
My best to you & the hubby
Diane
I know Sue didn't touch upon this regarding foster home. There is nothing wrong with Wendy, it's just that she's currently living in a home where the family is very active (like they are mountain climbers, active) and wasn't expecting a girl that is more on a senior level. Especially with having to build her back leg muscle back. The foster home really feels like it is more of an atrophy issue and it's improving every day. They haven't used the Rimadyl once that the vet prescribed as they don't feel that it's necessary. They have her on a diet of Wellness Duck & Potato and her skin has really responded well to it.

The foster home was originally expecting a 7 y.o. (age shelter said she was) that could keep up with their 18 month Black Russian Terrier, which she's not. I think she's more like 9-10 age-wise. Definitely needs to be in a somewhat laid back home. She is GREATLY improving every day, but the folks have hardwood floors and lots of hardwood steps and they would like to see her in her new home sooner than later. They take her on several walks daily and she's doing fine with keeping up.
Thanks for letting us know.
Thanks Deb for explaining the issue.

Spend most of my time at my husband's side at the hospital.

I do check my VM during the day & EM at night.

I have had some interest in her & possible foster.

Nothing definite. Good placement takes time.

Again, if you know anyone interested in Wendy pls contact me.

She deserves a home she is very sweet
Just wanted to update everyone. NEOESR found a permanent home for Wendy. :D Her fosters met the new owners on Saturday. Don't really know too many details, but I'm sure there will be a story about it in the next Tales End published by NEOESR.
Hi everyone,I just thought you would like an update on Wendy from Brooklyn. Wendy got up today and ran after a ball and my little Corgie Sadona, wendy ,who we have renamed HOPE chased Sedona at a very good gallup!! She could barely stand on saturday after a few minutes. She loves walks and her new sisters. Everyday there is an improvement she even tried to climb on the couch,so I believe she is on the road to recovery thanks to Dave who fostered her!!! She is a sweet girl and when my girls come home in 2 weeks I will post some updated pictures. Thank you Grannie Annie for the chance to love a sweet girl like HOPE she has found her forever home. Sherry
What a wonderful, encouraging update! Thank you, Sherry, for adopting this sweet girl and giving her a furever home. :P
That's great news on Hope....love the new name! Thanks for welcoming her into your home and family!

Congrats!
Sherry, thank you for adopting Wendy/Hope. I knew there was so much sweetness in her from the moment I saw her. I am so glad to hear that she is improving so much and also enjoying her new home.
Sherry
Thank you so much for giving that sweetie a home!
What a lucky girl!
I have followed her since day one!
Thanks to all involved..
Good work!
Kathy
Sherry,
Thank you for giving Wendy a home!
I knew she would thrive in a loving surrounding.
Funny you should name her Hope, that is the other name she was called in the shelter.
Despite all the controversy surrounding Wendy/Hope's journey it worked out for her, which is ALL that really matters!
It so important that rescues work together.
Look forward to photos soon.
 I just love a happy ending!! This one brought tears to my eyes!!
Sherry, thank you for much for adopting this sweet baby. I just know you will love each other to pieces!
Thanks to Sue, Deb, Dave, Sherry & NEOESR for helping Hope find her forever home. :hearts: (apologies if I missed anyone)

Usually it's the dogs that others see the least potential in that make the best pets. It takes a special person to recognize that potential.

Wendy is a lucky girl to have so many people looking out for her.

Just rec'd this email. Poor baby.
Sherry I am so sorry you lost Hope so soon.

The very sad, sad, sad, news is that Wendy died. She had a huge tumor in her belly and when the vet x-rayed her, she was full of BB's...as in BB gun. They had caused numerous little fractures throughout her body and that is what broke down her bones in the rear. The vet is going to send me a full report. All the suffering that this girl went through. I just can't belive that no vet along the way thought to have her x-rayed. I am so sorry to have to report this very sad news to those of you who put so much effort into saving her.

Please know that her last two weeks may very well have been her happiest. She had a bed and love and good food and someone with her 24/7 and she rested on her bed like a princess.
Her last happy days and new friends would have made up for her appauling startin life..
So sad nothing was noticed,
Did vet say how long he thinks they were inside her?
SO very sad
R.I.P. Wendy/Hope x
I'm so very sorry... how horribly tragic. Poor Wendy.
She had a chance to see what it was like to be loved rather than abused.

Sue, if it hadn't been for you, she never would have gotten into a home.
And thanks for loving her as long as you could, Sherry... and for finally getting the answers.

Hugs to you both... there's no more suffering for this sweet girl. She runs free again without pain.
OMG 8O
Why...Why...Oh Why
Just makes me sick
Poor sweet girl Wendy
>>>No wonder she was hurting
Run pain free now little girl
Diane
I am so sorry that Sherry lost this wonderful girl so soon. :( Thank you for giving her a few weeks to know true love. I cannot believe someone could actually do that to a poor helpless animal. Run free at the bridge sweet Hope, no one can hurt you again.
Oh, I am SOO angry!
My husband was wondering if it was buckshot from a shotgun rather
than BBs... both because of the quantity and the damage done.
Whoever did this was evil...
I am so sorry for her suffering and your lost.
Poor Hope. :(

What a tragedy , and needless suffering because of some incredibly mean person.
 Poor Hope! At least she had some love at the end.
I don't mean to be dense, but did someone shoot her, or did she eat them? It's terrible either way, I just wasn't quite sure what had happened.
You are not dense. I asked the same question.
when i find out i will let you know.
I just hate to hear about stuff like this. I really dont know how to respond..

It just makes me angry and sick that someone that we very well may pass on the street does this to innocent animals...whether she ate them or was shot, the bottom line is that someone didnt take care of her the way that she deserved to be taken care of...

Thank you for doing the best for her at the end. Bless you lil Hope.
OMG, how senselessly tragic this is!!  That poor baby deserved so much better.

Thanks to everyone who helped make her last few weeks of life the best she'd ever known. All I can say about the evil person who did this to her - your day of judgment will come!

This doesn't sound like they got there voluntarily.

Sounds like during the x-rays of her tumour they found all these bb's in her body.
Poor Hope. :(
Huge thanks to all of those who loved her enough to fight to save her.
She knew love, not abuse in the end.

I am absolutely speechless at the horror some of these dogs suffer - at least this poor dog had loving and caring days towards the end of her life. God bless the rescuers.
