Blow Dryer

Well... I've been advised to not let my dogs air dry after a bath to get their coats into show condition..... so, today I finally got a chance to bathe Sky, and tried the blow dryer, but she hates it! She really really hates the sound of it, but she seemd to like the warm air. I guess I'll just get her used to it a bit at a time with lots of praise and treats.
Anyone else have any experience with blow drying their sheepies?

Yes, mine hate it too. I'm thinking a force dryer would blow that water off quicker, thus less time with the NOISE! With myself I find keeping the dryer away from my face and ears really helps me cope when doing my own hair. Watch where you hold it.
i blow dryed walter for the first time yesterday... i put a lead on him and tied it around something so he couldnt move. after he got over not being able to run away and realizing he couldnt bite the air, he did very well! thankfully he was tired and just went to sleep halfway through. he looked so fluffy afterwards too
I used the blow dryer on all my boys. They like it when I use it Oreo puts his head under my hair to see me, they will adjust to it, my hand brushes them while the other holds the hair dryer. I towel dry before using the dryer.
I know it helps sometimes if you can find a hairdryer that is not loud. Though I'm sure you're not looking to make another purchase, I know it's "helped" a lot of my friends and myself. :)
with PIsco I was lucky......although he doesn`t like it he tolerates it.....since he was a baby (and velcroed to me 24/7 ) as I was combing and blow drying my own hair I would sometimes blow him a bit....just for fun....to get him used to it...and he did, now he doesn`t fuss about it....but I can`t used it on very hot...just warm.
Pooh LOVES the hair dryer. Every morning when my wife is drying her hair he goes running in to get his face full. Now if only he would love the car...
LOL That's so cute!
This is one thing Drez will definitely NOT let me do, so she gets towel dried as much as I can, then air dries the rest of the way.

Must be the noise of the dryer, cause she also HATES the vacuum. Will put up with it until it's within about 3 feet of her, then she high tails it!

Miceky at 1st hated the dryer also. Now that he is growing up he doesnt mind it,in fact I think he enjoys the warm air after his tubby. We just have to remember to keep it set on "warm" and not "hot" so they dont get burned. When the air hits his face he tries and eats the air
The first time I got the blow dryer after Pud, he tried to unplug it while I wasn't looking. I started by just doing a little at the time and he eventually got used to it. He sits by me when I dry my hair in the mornings and waits for me to turn the dryer on him. When it has been raining outside and he comes in, when he sees me with the dryer, he goes to is "place" and patiently waits for me to dry him out.
With Scout we use the hair dryer and both of us to do it. She sits on my lap while I comb her and my girlfriend gets her with the hair dryer. She just curls up on my lap until the one side is done then she shifts so we can get the other side. Try using a defuser on the hair dryer so it keeps the heat down a little bit and the noise as well. Plus then you get a SUPER fluffy coat.
Thanks for the tips eveyone... tomorrow will be our first attempt to blow dry for the whole grooming session....lol
Emily HATES the blow dryer! She will do everything in her power to try and escape, and she's been blow dryed since her first bath. she barks and jumps and is just insane. I can't even do my own hair without her barking and racing around the house like a little nut. i can pick it up with her around and she gets on gaurd and starts barking. maybe we tease her too much with it... we can just say blow dryer and pretend to hold one to get her going  .
Jack and Annabelle have been blow dryed since they came here. LOL We decided since grooming is such an important task in the life of an OES, that they better get used to it. We started everything slow and with short intervals. We did take time to let them get used to the sound, by just leaving it on as a normal background noise. It won't take long, it seems sheepies respond well to lots of "love talk" and yummy treats. LOL
I can turn on my blow dryer to blow dry my hair or one of the cats, and Jack and Annabelle come running and lay down ready to be groomed. :D

Good luck!
Stormi and co.
Mukwa loves the blow dryer, when ever I take it out and turn it on he jumps and barks then jumps back a couple of feet. I turn the dryer towards him again he barks and jumps back once again. It is a game to him. We play like this for a minute then he stays still so I can dry him.
:D
Awww is that a new pic of him Dawna? He is so adorable!
Willowsprite,

I posted under the topic "Dog Dryers Any Good" yesterday which, in part, addresses the stresses involved with using "human hair dryers" for drying our Bobtails. It may be of some interest to you, especailly as you are now starting to groom Dancer for shows. :)

Like any new experience, especially one that constrains our Bobtails, blow drying is something that needs to be introduced in a deliberate and measured manner and at as young an age as possible. 8O Puppies are generally more bidable than older dogs so the sooner they are exposed, the easier it is, generally, to train them to tolerate, even enjoy :o :o , grooming and blow drying.
Martin Zephram was 4 months old when we came to us but had been introduced to grooming by his breeder. Just as she warned us Martin tried to lie to us the first few times and pretend he didn't know the routine but when we were gently insistant he "gave up" his objections and has since behaived well on the table. He tries to hide when called for grooming and I have to pick him up onto the table but once up he is really well behaved, both for grooming and post bath drying.
Virgil Tiberius is very similar. He won't volunteer to get on the table, as a matter of fact he puts on a really good bluff  when I pick him up, gurring and complaining to the extent that if you didn't know better you'd swear he was on the verge of eating me! However literally with 3 seconds of being laid on the table he gives me a kiss and settles in for several hours of grooming or post bath drying  .

Good luck and let me know if I can offer any help or other advise. :?:
LOL that's too cute.... Sky loves getting up on tables ... any table.... and she doesn't mind the dryer too much now. Dancer is going to have some time with the dryer today, so we'll see how it goes. I should have started everything with her sooner and didn't. Hopefully I haven't messed things up too much... lol.... patience is the key, and I do think Dancer will realize that it feels good and probably have a snooze after a bit. I'm hoping anyway! LOL
