Relentless Humping

Hi

I brought home a rescue OES last night and he's obsessed with humping me. Only me, I'm so lucky. I turn away from him without touching him in any way, he will then walk behind me humping the air. He wraps his legs around me anywhere he can get - I'm only 5' so you can imagine the struggle. He is not neutered and depending on what his heartworm test says today that will be scheduled ASAP.

I've had another rescue dog that was his age (6) and not neutered until his heartworm treatment was finished. He never had this issue so it's a new one for me. ANY advice on how to handle or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Maryann

Hi Maryann,

Congrats on the new dog, and sorry to hear about your situation.
My guess would be that this is dominance. You are doing the right thing by not allowing it, however you also need to fight back by asserting YOUR dominance. When Tucker has done this to me (he used to do it a lot when he was younger, especially when we were playing), I would firmly say, "NO", and get him off my leg, then give him a command, even something easy like "sit". This is telling him, "I am the boss, not you, and you will do what I tell you to". It sounds mean, but it's important that you form this new bond carefully and properly so that this behaviour doesn't turn into something more dominant, like nipping, food aggression, etc.
Hi Maryann,
I am experiencing the same problems... I too just adopted an OES from rescue on Saturday and he had been neutered 10 days prior to me adopting him. We are STILL experiencing humping issues... We have tried VERY hard to be firm and say NO and BAD. However, we are still having the problems. I spoke with the Vet about the problem and he said since my pup (Higgins is his name) was neutered so late that it will take some time for his "male" hormones to go away. Thus, it we will just have to be really firm for a long while until it ends. However, I COMPLETELY understand your frustration.
Good luck,
EBD
When we got Gar in January, he was very into humping our other male OES who by the way did nothing about it. We were firm and each and every time he did it, we stopped it. Its now March and haven't seen a hump for awhile.
Keep a short lead on him whenever you're home, EVERY TIME he humps you should say NO and then grab the lead and move him away several feet to a lay down & stay. Eventually he'll get the point and stop trying to dominate you.
