Hawaii- The Big Island

Has anyone been to the Big Island, Hawaii? We're looking at vacationing at the end of Oct or start of Nov. Where should we stay? The newly renovated Waikolou Beach Marriott Resort looks WONDERFUL! Let me know. Thanks!

I haven't been there since I was in college - and that was a long, long time ago.

I did love it, and it was beautiful!! :D
never been to the big island but in 3 weeks we are going to Oahu...waikiki...

we go every other year...i LOVE hawaii!!!! if you want to know about Oahu, let me know!!
I go to Oahu a few times a year, my corporate office is there. :D (I don't get many sympathy votes due to my demanding work travel.) But I've never been to the big island either. I can get you all over Oahu though!

Have you ever flown that far? If not, here's my advice - if you can afford it, go 1st class - especially on the red-eye home. I upgrade every opportunity I have because it's just such a long flight to be SO cramped up....especially if you have trouble sleeping on planes.
Personally I would stay in Hilo because the other side (Kona Coast) of the Big Island is so touristy -- I love the Big Island!!!! Go see the National Volcano Park and the black sand beach - both are really amazing!! We went on a whale watching tour but it was only okay. I suggest going with one of the smaller local groups and not the big tourist boats - they sound better and you get a lot closer.

I forgot the name of the hotel we stayed at but I'll get my scrapbook out and look up the name of it. It was nice.
Thanks guys!

Yes, I'm concerned about the flight. We went to Maui and Kauai several years ago and the long flight stunk. I was okay on the way there because I was excited. During the trip home, I was climbing up the walls. I can't sleep on airplanes. We don't have enough points or $ to fly first class. I checked and the seats were like $3000 8O. I don't think the airlines have non-stop flights anymore from Chicago. So, it will be good to get off in Phoenix or LA to stretch our legs.

MonaLisa, you like to scrapbook??? I was addicted for a while. Each doggie has their own book :D
if you get off in phx, ill come by and say hi!!!! especially if you have a 3 or more hour layover...

my sister and her husband usually do a 2 part trip...they layover here or LA, spend the night, then fly out the next day!
My son is stationed in Hawaii. He's Navy. He's only been there about 4 months so far. We are planning a visit sometime soon. I can't wait!! Even though I have never been to Hawaii, I am more excited to see my son and my beautiful new DIL. Yeah Hawaii will be good too.
another forum I frequent was recently talking about Hawiia and about pets in hotels there. So I copied the info, incase youwanted to take your Sheepie!

Quote: "Here in Hawaii, visitors now have the option to bring pets with them on vacation, due to the easing of quarantine laws several years ago.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort, one of the high-end hotels here, has a program called "Pampered Paws" for dogs:
• A doorman will welcome guests as well as their pets by name on arrival.
• Pets will be personally escorted to his/her room.
• A customized pet welcome amenity will be placed in the guest room upon arrival:
• Homemade peanut butter dog biscuits (specially handmade by executive chef Wayne Hirabayashi) with the dog’s name on each cookie for a personalized touch!
• A custom-made dog bowl with the hotel's name and logo in the Kahala blue and gold colors will also be placed in the room.
• A custom designed dog bed made of blue and gold fabric will be placed beside the guest’s bed, so that the dog can be near their owner at bedtime.
• A card with dog commands and phrases in the Hawaiian language provides a truly Hawaiian learning experience for the entire family.

Of course, one of the main goals of this program is to market the hotel to celebrities and other VIPs who want to vacation in Hawaii with their pets.

Hi Stacy - well I wouldn't say I "scrapbook" exactly but I try to make my pictures look interesting and not just on the plain page. I actually collage and love that so when I put together out pictures in an album -- it has that collage background look to it. My sister is a great scrapbooker though and we always get the best presents from her.

BTW you are going to love Hawaii We lived there for a couple of years (my husband is Army) and I think everyone should go there at least once before they "kick the bucket" There's no place else like Hawaii!!! Aloha!
I prefer Hilo to the west and north side, as said above, tooooo touristy. But if that's your pleasure.......

See if you can hustle up the bike trip DOWN Mona Kea, the volcano. You start at the top around sunrise in COLD temps (it can snow!) and work your way down through many different climate zones. Fascinating.

The whole island is fascinating as it is so varied. Be sure to check out the volanco tubes.......underground.

I understand the volanco is spewing again.....surely a once in a life time view.
