Crate Training Puppy

I just got my OES puppy this last weekend and am debating keeping him in a cage vs in a large bathroom while I'm at work. I have people coming to let him out during the day but I'm uneasy leaving him in a crate for hours. If I do use a crate which size should I use? He's 30 lbs 3 1/2 months now but I know he will get much bigger. Please help! I want a happy healthy puppy but I dont want him munching on the bathroom all day.

I don't have my pupper yet, but when you mentioned bathroom, all I could see is bath tissue all over the dog and the room, not to mention chewed towels, etc. I'll let the other members tell you what their experiences have been...

I highly recommend crate training! They enjoy their crates and you can ensure their safety while your gone. There's so much dogs can get into (my aunt's Bloodhound ATE her entire bathroom when she was left in there).

I vote for crate training - also helps with Housebreaking!!!
Oh Pooh, I forgot to take out the toliet paper!!!! I'm going to call my helper and have her take out the toliet paper and towels!!! Thanks for the save
Go with Crate training.....less to clean up.
I would also say crate training first, and as he gets older and shows his bathroom habits are maturing then you can give him more room as he grows and mores area. If there is too much area while they are young, they will go to the bathroom and move away from it. It can be a large setback in the training process.
Also, my pups destoyed our laundry room by chewing through the drywall, if they would have still been crated instead of giving a larger area, I might not have holes...LOL
I think it is great that you have someone coming during the day to let him out, that will be helpful in potty training as well as letting him have a little extra excercise.
Good luck! WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

Yeah! He didn't eat the toliet paper, which is now moved out of his reach. He was napping in the tub which makes sense as he was up playing most of the night. I found a large crate but now I have another question. Should I use a divider to make it smaller or will he be okay for the full size? The divider seems so harsh but I'm sure you guys know better then I. What have you experiences been with dividers? Thanks
I would try the large one and see if he has accidents - if so - then try the divider! He will grow so fast I'm sure he'll fit perfectly in the large crate sooner than you may like! I never needed one with a divider!

Set it up with a comfy blanket and some toys / bones. You can put some paper down (or pee pads) in part of the crate if he's still too young to expect holding it - but that probably won't be necessary for too long. Give him a treat when he's going in! You will see that he enjoys it and will probably start to head in once it's time for you to go!

I am not a proponent of crate training, however I have to say, a crate over a bathroom. Here is why. While in the crate they are restricted in space, but not visually. They can still see what may cause a noise or if something is going on, and would be less scared of noises and the natural goings on around him. In the bathroom they are cut off from all interaction, and I think could become scared of the sounds and noises. I think it would be cruel to leave him/her in the bathroom for the day regardless of having someone come in to let him/her out to potty. I understand for a short term solution but not for the long run.

As you read this forum and other sites regarding OES, you may come across a story about a real estate woman who saved an OES from the confines of a Laundry Room, (it might be this site) and you will see the cruelty in it.

So good luck on your puppy and remember they are part of you family a child with extra legs. Teach him and love him and he will teach and love you in return. The rewards are huge for those who love.
I will chime in with a vote for crate training. Though my guy now seems to enjoy his freedom outside of the crate, we still use it.

I had bought this crate: http://www.jbpet.com/Shopping/product.a ... tesFolding when he was a pup (#708 black) and bought a divider. Seemed I was moving the divider out once a week as he grew, but he loved the crate. I am sure that the house breaking took less time by us using the crate.

My only issue with this crate was right when we started using it. he wouldn't settle down at first, and my solution was to cover three of the four sides witha sheet. Seems he was use to the plastic travel crate I received when I got him and enjoyed the "cave-like" feel of that. To this day I still have the sheet over the crate, and a fan in front of the door.
Crate training is the way to go. They get so used to it later on that they go and chill out in it when they want to be left alone. Until you OES can be trusted around the house when you are not home, it's the safest way for your dog and your furniture.
I have a yes to crate training.

Watch Turner and Hooch. Great example of dogs being able to get out. That and you've probably got cupboards, carpets, shower curtain....all will get eaten.

It's also good when your dog has to be left at a Vet, Kennel and/or Groomers and must be crated later in life - they are much less stressed about it!
