Childhood Dreams?

In Jo's thread under What Does It Mean, Steph wrote:
"I've always loved the Iditarod. As a kid I wanted to race in it one day. Clearly that never happened..."

It made me think about the various things we aspire to as children and whether or not we got to do any of them. I thought it might make for an interesting thread/discussion. 8)

So, come on! :D Fess up! :P what did you want to do/be when you grew up? :D Did you do it? Do you think you ever will? :?

One of my personal goals was to go on a USO tour with Bob Hope. Obviously, I've had to give that one up.

As a kid, I wanted to be a florist, or a chef.

Sadly....

I'm an accountant

Life doesn't always work out how we wanted, but we make the best of it.
As a kid, I was positive I'd be a veterinarian. Never even thought about a second job.

Okay, that's a lie...

I also would dream I was the wife of a famous wrestler (that was my thing b/c dad watched it and i thought the guys were hot) ...and all his friends would be jealous he had me as his trophy wife. This is in my dreams, mind you...

But as I got older, I wanted nothing more than to be a soccer mom to an army officer. A lot of it is from being a military brat combined with going into the military myself. I just liked their lifestyle and how cleancut [and hot] the men always looked, and role the wives had to take on (supporting her husband's troops and the responsibility of setting the example for other wives in his battalion).

I guess you can say I'm living my dream ...minus all the farting, throwing of dirty clothes everywhere, and "man smell" that came along with my glorious image of marriage that no one told me about.

LMAO
I attended my highschool reunion a few years ago and there was a booklet given out as to what everyone was doing now. No one was suprised by what mine said. My high school annual said I had aspirations to be either a teacher or a vet. I also wanted to travel the world, dabble in acting, business, take art lessons and jump out of an airplane at some point. Kinda like the 50 things to do before I die list. I'm on my third one. Skydiving is still on my list.

As far back as Elementary school, I was forever rescuing strays and bringing them home with me. My sister was the same way. We had 13 cats, 2 dogs, and various injured birds. I've realized since birth I have never lived without an animal in my home, but for the exception of travelling. I feel so lucky in many ways as I'm living the dream I use to think about as a kid.

I remember wanted to learn to surf and to parachute. Then I had a bike accident and was unconcious for 8 days. Lost most of my memories (surfing and parachuting have come back over the years).

I haven't tried either but I still might. My kids offerred me parachuting lessons, not sure what their motive was at the time...

LOL - you were probably correct in being suspicious!
I think the motivation would be directly related to their age. If any were 2-3 or 13-17 (especially girls in that later one), REFUSE!!!
My childhood aspiration was to be a veterinarian or librarian; however, that didn't happen. I didn't become a vet primarily due to allergies and I didn't become a librarian as the cost of additional education would never pay off. So, I work behind a computer all day in the pharma industry and make a decent living. This industry comfortably supports my illness, lifestyle and involvement with sheepdogs.

I never aspired to be a wife or a mother. Finding the most wonderful man for me was a pleasant and unsuspected surprise in my life. I'm very fortunate to have such an accomodating doting husband. Who knows, maybe I'll wake up and decide to be a mom as well...right now I'm comfortable in my role of doggie Mom.

Surpringly to most, what I'd like to do in this lifetime is drive a golf cart. I know my expectations aren't too high. That shouldn't be a very difficult thing to do, but I don't golf so the courses won't let me ride
My first dream was to be a Dolphin trainer. Then I found out I would have to touch and feed dead fish. :cow: So I decided against that.

Then I wanted to be a dancer, singer and an actress. Did all of them, not professionally though. Destroyed my knees dancing. The acting was fun, but very time consuming and not really rewarding. The singing was good, but our coaches overworked us to the point that most of us had lost our voices by the times our shows rolled around. Which was a big turn off!!
I wanted to train dolphins too! I wanted to be a marine biologist and spent many summers doing camp at Sea World. Then, like you E, I realized there'd be a lot of dead fish involved. Plus, I'm not scientifically or mathematically inclined! My brother's gf is studying to be a marine biologist, so maybe she can take me on field trips!
I wanted to draw comic books when I grew up; that or do matte paintings for Industrial Lights an Magic out at Lucasfilm.

I sort of do neither; but I also sort came close. Sadly the art of matte painting is a dying one; most productions have gone to digital set extensions instead.

So I'm a very late blooming illustrator now. At this moment, I'm working on a trading card set featuring "The Women of Marvel Comics" (so clsoe to drawing for comic books!) and last summer I did two lithographs for Star Wars' 30th anniversary. I'm cosnidering my "what do you want to be when you grow up" a close win!
I grew up wanting playing at my grandfathers drafting table...drawing houses.....I didnt venture to far from that dream, just a little more specialized...kitchen designer...have always loved it and always will!

Visit my parents in AZ...they live on a golf course and have their own cart to drive on the course or around the neighborhood. It even works for emergency rescue of a lazy sheepdog  Picture a long morning walk....it got too long for Izzie (I think her middle name should be - "hater of long walks") about 2 blocks from my parents house. She just flat-out refused to move anymore. Sent Melissa back for the golf cart. Princess Izzie climbed right in for the the ride back to the house

Bonus...if you visit you get to meet Lucky...the sweetest and most attention craving sheepie in the area :D PS...he loves long walks
I always wanted to own a sheepdog...

that was my adulthood dream. I had them as a child, and dreamed of having them again as an adult!
Haha this is a great thread! Very interesting to see what everyone wanted to do.
I always wanted to do dancing, acting & singing which I did at college, I still dance when I'm well enough & I play guitar.

I think my main interest has always been the paranormal, probably from living in haunted houses from the age of 3-21 (my parents sure pick 'em) Now I'm using my "ill time" to develop my psychic skills, with a view to eventually becoming a medium. I would like to learn bereavement counselling as part of that. I don't think anyone at school would be surprised.

My only dream as a kid that I can remember was to own a horse. At the age of 27 I learned to ride and at 30 bought Bob the Wonder Pony.

I never had any idea of what I wanted to be when I grew up. But I'm very happy being a liberrian.
An information and archive classification, storage and retrieval engineer?
My dad was a barber, so I always wanted to be a hairdresser. And I was, for a short while. Had to give it up after 3 years because my hands became too sensitive to the chemicals. The training hasn't gone to waste, though. My husband hasn't paid for a haircut in the 35 years I've known him, and my son and daughter never paid for haircuts until they went off to college.

I also always wanted a sheepdog from the time I was about 8 years old. We've been owned by sheepies for 29 years now, and I wouldn't trade a second of it!

I did always want a family, too. That dream came true with my kids. Without them we'd be richer (basic upbringing, plus college), have less gray hair and less worries about their well-being even as adults, but what's the trade-off? I have a poster up in my house that reads: I can imagine a life without children, but it wouldn't have the same laughter.
I wanted to have a horse (now have 2) and to be a vet (now a nurse)

a what???! oh. for a second---i thought you meant something else.
I partially made my childhood dream come true. When I was in school I wanted to be an Elementary School Teacher. I am now a Field Trainer and I also teach Sunday School for K-2 grade at church. :)
I always wanted to be a Saturday Night Live cast member. I still might do it, I don't know.
Me too Butterstotch!! Saturday Night Live or Mad TV!! I'd be in heaven! I always wanted to contact Oprah or some other show that makes dreams come true to ask if I could do it just the one time. Wouldn't want to do it regularly as OMG it makes for long days. On average 12 hours of filming daily.

I made two pilots for TV about five years ago, but neither got picked up...played Daisy Wifflesnorkle. The description of her read "loves animals and kids but has the brains of cotton candy". She even had a fluorescent pink muppet sheepdog! Kinda like the Hillbillies and Muppets mixed together. :D

You'd be great Jil - I can see you playing a character on SNL!

Um....WHERE can we get a copy of this!?
If you get ahold of Oprah to help you fulfill your dreams...I have an adult dream!

I would love to be in a Broadway musical, even a downtown Chicago musical. No, I'm not musical, but I would just once love to be on stage in full costume and makeup. Even just walking with the ensemble!

The thought makes my heart go pitty pat!
I wanted to marry Peter Jennings or George Strait and become a Supreme Court Justice.

Still looking for that tall, smart, good guy… and the law thing fizzled. I did however meet Peter Jennings once. Told him of my plot. He said I was better off. Bit of Trivia: Peter Jennings always carried a copy of the Constitution in his pocket. It would have been a perfect match, but the fates didn’t agree. Never met George Strait. But sometimes I have been known to read Supreme Court transcripts, and sing some Strait while in the bathtub.

Never thought I’d be where I am today, can’t complain about it,… life is content and that is good.
:D

...and if you'll buy that...
I've got some Ocean Front Property in Arizona, from my front porch you can see the sea.
Deb have you ever done community theatre?? :D

Jill, I can totally see you being a cast member on SNL.

Nope. As a kid I took about 2 lessons at Tom Thumb Players. I sucked. I have no creativity in me...hence...being a numbers gal.

BUT! I love musicals. I find them thrilling, and I would, just once, like to go on the stage!

hey, why do you think we're hanging on to our house? it very well may end up being one of those cute bungalows on the beach
Deb, maybe you could threaten to audit a playgroup and tell them you'll only let them off the hook if they let you on stage during a performance.
If oprah grants dreams I want the property (ocean front or otherwise) and building to do my black dog rescue so put a good word in for me. She was here in Baltimore on chanel 13 when she first started out . My brother in law worked with her. Wonder if that will give me an in?????
