We let Lucy go this morning

Today we made the hardest decision that we've ever had to make and let Lucy go. We loved her so much but we couldn't let her go on in pain. She could no longer get up on her own and even when we helped her, she'd fall after a few steps. We've been helping her go to the bathroom for awhile because she couldn't go by herself. She couldn't eat by herself so I was spoon feeding her the last couple of days. On top of it all, she suffered from cognitive dysfunction syndrome and was very confused most of the time, startling easily and getting herself stuck behind doors and in corners. As much as we didn't mind being there to help her, it wasn't fair to her to have to live like that. Her quality of life was gone and I just wanted her pain to go away so she could be comfortable again.

I'll really miss my cranky old lady. I hope she's in a happier place now.

I keep trying to figure out how to say how sorry I am, but words fail me.
Oh Jill! I'm so sorry! I wasn't expecting this at all. I don't really know what to say.
My thoughts are prayers are with you. This is one of the worst decisions we have to make in life, but in the end we do know it is the right one. Carlos and I send our sympathies.

I'm so sorry Jill. Lucy will definitely be missed.
Jill & James,

So, so sorry to hear about Lucy. Her situation was so much like our Maggie McGee IV's. We grieve right along with you.

It's hard to find the right words now but know that you did the right thing by your girl. I'm sure she's in a better place with so many other beloved dogs that have gone before her.

Hugs,

Nita, Nelson & Sassy

Sending hugs at this sad time and thinking of you all. :ghug:

Run young run free again lucy :(
Jill,

Thank you for being strong for Lucy, and I am saddened by your loss. I see Lucy at the bridge with Jake. He's showing her around and telling her where all the nylabones are stored.

James and you should lean on each other and give the other big furry guys an extra set of hugs tonight.
I thought I misread the title of this thread. :(

I'm so sorry you guys lost beautiful Lucy. Big hugs to you :(
All of us who have gone through this know exactly how your heart feels. They mean so much to us and it is so hard to let them go.

Godspeed sweet Lucy. You were truly loved and will be missed by many.

Jill and James, there really are no words to express my sadness at your loss.

You know where I'm at if you need anything.

Love,
Jil
Oh Jill :( , I am so sorry. Why does it have to be so very hard to love these darn creatures and lose them. What a luck luck y girl Lucy was to have been loved by you. (((HUGS)))
So deeply sorry to hear of Lucy's passing. I understand the love and loss that you feel and the difficulty in making the decision. Know that all of us are holding you close to our hearts.
When Jil lost Belle a few years ago, I remember her telling me how much it helped to read all the thoughtful posts from everyone on the forum and I really didn't understand how it could help.

Now I do.

Thank you everyone for your sweet posts, PMs, e-mails and phone calls (even though I'm not up for talking yet). You guys really are awesome and I don't mean that in a generic way-- this is such a great group of people. Even after everything was over this morning, I thought about you guys first, letting you know and sharing with you because I knew you'd understand. It helps more than I can tell you to have you guys around.
Jill and James,

Words cannot express the sadness I feel. But that is nothing compared to the pain in your hearts. I feel lucky to have met your beautiful girl. She was graceful and elegant, and you were so wonderful to her during the time she shared with you.

Hugs.. :(
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
I am so sad seeing this post for the first time tonight. Sweet (sometimes cranky) Lucy, I know she has been your family for such a long time. She was such a pretty girl, I will really miss hearing the stories about her being the queen of the house. My heart's breaking for you- so sorry for your loss.
Jill and James - I am so sorry for you. I was reading posts after getting home from work tonight - I didn't expect to see this. :(

Knowing it is time is small consolation to you now. But, thankfully we have this option with our dogs. Seeing Lucy in pain, lost and confused is no way to live. After a great and long life, she can thank you for this last thing. Hopefully soon you can look back and smile and tell stories of Lucy.

:ghug: :ghug:
 so sorry to read about your Lucy. Hugs to you at this sad time and all your family...xx
Jill, James and Family,

I am sooo sorry to hear of the loss of your Lucy girl.
Please know I am thinking of you. Wishing you strength and peace.

Nance

:hearts:
Jill, I am so very sorry to hear this sad news. I hope that Lucy is happy and pain free at the bridge

Best wishes and big hugs to you all
Hey guys
Sorry to hear about Lucy. It wil always hurt but in time the happy memories will be the most prevalent ones.

Jill, Toby said that if you want him to fly out and tackle you a couple of times to make you feel better, he will.
Oh Jill,

I thought about ya'll all last night. I'm very sorry you two had to go through this with Lucy. I'll be thinking about ya both again today as well.

Hugs to both of you!

Roland
I'm so sorry to hear about Lucy. She was a very lucky girl to have a great
family to love and care for her. The decision to let them go can be so
difficult... but it's an act of love and compassion. Hugs to you and your
family during this sad time.
:ghug:
I'm sorry to hear about Lucy. I'm glad I was able to meet her at the picnic this past summer. I hope your hearts stop hurting soon.
I'm very sorry for the loss of your friend.
I'm so sorry. I know how much you loved her, it came through in your posts. She was a major part of your K9 pack and your family pack. Now she runs free again.
I'm so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you.
I'm sorry to hear of Lucy's passing, but you made the the right and kindest decision, my sympathy's to you on your loss.
I'm really sorry for your loss. :( It sounds like you did the best thing for Lucy and now she can rest.
Oh Jill, I am so sorry for you and James. As you know many of us on here have experienced this horrible pain before and when we lose a "member" of our OES family like your sweet Lucy we feel bad for you and her. We are all here for you and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

It never feels like the "right time" even though you knew it was. Lucy was very lucky to have you as her mom and she knew it.

The boys are going to miss being bossed around too - include them in the hugs from me to you. Take care.

:ghug:

By the way, I hate this section of the forum - but I DO know it does feel better to hear from everyone - so I am brave and come here anyway to give my support. I am glad it was helpful for you.
Jill, I am so sorry for your loss. I know how unbelievably painful it can be to say goodbye but you did what was best for Lucy. It's obvious how much you love her. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Tasha
Jill I'm so sorry for your loss :(
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. i know that it was a hard decision, bless you for being able to make it. I am thinking of you.
It makes me sad when I hear about your loss of Lucy! But you made the right decision! She is now on a better place!

Loads of hugs from all of us .... :ghug:
I'm so sorry about Lucy :( . Doing the best thing for her was the worst heartbreak for you and James. I promise it does get better but it takes time. Give the boys a squeeze from me since they lost a friend as well, and big hugs from Benny and me :ghug:
I am just now seeing this thread and want to add my sympathy and support to all that has already been said. I am awed by the amazing care you gave her, particularly towards the end when it gets so much more complicated. It is so hard to say goodbye but at least the happy memories will be with you always. I wonder what the boys will do without the bosslady to keep them inline.

Much sympathy,

Val
Jill and James, we are so sorry to hear about Lucy. There's just no easy way to say goodbye......

Our thoughts are with you.

Laurie and Oscar
Jil and James,

I'm so sorry to hear the loss of Lucy. I felt I knew her personally from the years of post and photos of your lovely girl. I was always in awe of this grand dame putting up from that rumbunctiousness of her kid brothers! What a sweetheart she was and her occasional grumpiness only may her more endearing. I will forever miss her. RIP Lucy - may you be playing and running at the bridge.

Hugs from Marianne
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Jill, Im so very sorry to read about Lucy's passing. I always loved hearing about her, she reminded me very much of my own bossy, domineering girl. Im certain she enjoying herself at the bridge, ordering all the other dogs around

Take care of yourself, I know what a rough time this must be for you :ghug:
Sorry for the loss of your precious baby girl.
so very very sorry for your loss
So Sorry Jill

Sending you ((((hugs)))))
I am so sorry for your loss....
Jill, I don't come here because it just makes me cry. I just heard that you let Lucy go and I am so sorry. That is just such a hard decision to make but know that she is free from pain and waiting at the bridge for you.
I still remember how much it hurt to let go of my sheepie Alfred, even though I knew it was the right thing to do. I took so much comfort from these words:

"I have sent you on a journey to a land free from pain. Not because I did not love you, but because I love you too much to make you stay."

God bless.
Jill, I am so very sorry for your loss. :(
Thinking of you, Jill. It's always hard to lose a old one, especially when you have to make a difficult choice. She's got to be much happier now, back to her young self.
Jill I'm sorry to hear about Lucy. I remember reading in other post that she was not is good health. She is in a better place now and free from pain. Obe and i will be thinking of of your family during this time.
I'm very sorry about your loss of Lucy. :(
Jill, I haven't said how sorry I am for your loss here on the forum...it is heartbreaking and I really hope you are feeling better now. I know 'better' isn't the right word, I just don't know what would be the right word.
