Helping Udders Dog Toys-Rubber Doughnut Holes can KILL

Sharing a story about a Helping Udders (helpingudders.com) food toy design that a forum member's Old English Sheepdog recently swallowed... he required emergency surgery a couple of days ago to save his life.

PLEASE go through your OESs and big dog's toys and seriously weigh the benefits of owning the product below (or any other that might be swallowed). It is NOT intended for our breed. The ad on the website indicates many of these were given away at agility trials so you may have one stuck somewhere now forgotten.

Products Swallowed- Rubber "Doughnut Holes"

After being removed from Corky's stomach and intestines:

The product page is now clearly labeled " NOT RECOMMENDED FOR LARGE DOGS!"... back on February 23rd, according to the Google cached page, this was not shown. The TOP of that product section indicates "Small to Med Dogs - Terriers up to 20 lbs"... it does not say this near this individual item as it does for other items in this same section "Not recommended for dogs over 20 lbs"

This is G o o g l e's cache of http://www.helpingudders.com/Shop.htm as retrieved on Feb 23, 2008 21:43:12 GMT:
Google's Cache... will change soon!

Just an observation but WHY label just a few items with this warning about a weight range and not every product?

I know someone who contacted a friend to whom they had an udder tug and demanded she throw it away. That too is made up of multiple rubber parts... they wouldn't want to hear that their "nieces and nephew" were harmed because the rope came undone or is chewed... it would make them sick.

I have heard that the company responded saying they have no legal liability... that we're responsible for our own pets.
So PLEASE be responsible and throw these things away if you have a dog over 20 pounds.

HEY!!! Wait a just a minute...

Take a look at that cached page from the 23rd... they had that darn doughnut listed under BIGGER DOGS and THEN they removed it when Corky ate the darn things and almost died!

I have the original ads saved as pdf. I also burned to cd.
Ron, can you post pdf?
here are just a few quotes from the ad before she changed it;

here are the original ads.
you can see she has since added Not a chew toy.
Clearly the original says that "dogs can chew them

"You can stuff em, bounce em,
roll em, and chew em (well your dog can
chew em).

"That thing smells like COW! Emma LOVES it. She loves it so much that she couldn't go outside
and potty, because it wasn't right next to her. I don't think I've ever seen her be so excited about
a toy. Thanks!!!!"

So, hmmmmmm Emma take hers outside, interesting, yes?

Durability
If used as an interactive toy (one you and
your dog play with together), your tug will last
many many months. But, like any other toy, if
you let your dog use it as a chew toy, it will
be destroyed - but, he'll have a blast doing it.

I find these 3 quotes very interesting!

It was also recommended that you stuff it with treats.

PLEASE, PLEASE TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO THROW THESE AWAY

:!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

Yes Corky did almost die! The donuts in his intestines were VERY close to puncturing his bowel. He was saved just in time. I don't want anyone else to go through this!
Another thought is that these things are sold at all.
Suppose you buy them for a small dog & a big dog gets it??

SCARY!

:!:
What a nightmare for you Sue 8O . Will Corky have any lasting effects?
He is doing very well.
I hope he continues to do so.
he is on pain meds & antibiotics.
His incisions (he has 2) look great
Just glad to have stinky boy home :D
I gave him a sponge bath, he really needed one pu :D
I will keep you posted, thanks, sue

Sure! Just upload them to the photo gallery like anything else.
How big are those things? Anything smaller than my fist makes me nervous. I even watch them with tennis balls.
I haven't run across these particular toys but thank you for the warning.

I am so glad that Corky seems to be on the mend. I can imagine what a scare that must have been.
Maybe 4"

Hindsight is 20/20, sigh!
OMG! How scary!
I hope Corky has an uneventful and painless recovery.
I am so glad he is ok!!!
I am scared of tennis balls too....
Were all those "doughnuts" in Corky??? 8O
I can totally see it happening, just thinking that he has lost it, and giving him another...any idea how long ago he started swallowing them...?

:?: On a whole other note, considering his love for doughnuts...have you ever thought he may want to be a police dog??? :?:

I found some nice over sized tennis balls - with their mouths I always thought a regular one is a bad size.

I bought bigger ones, too but, of course, they only like the little ones. Clyde has this lumpy little Kong ball that scares the crap out of me. He's never come close to having an accident with it but the way he tosses it around, I'm just waiting for the GULP. I want to take it away but he loves it so much so, instead, I watch like a hawk.
Chauncey has a " squeeker tennis ball " that he really likes, and it's larger than a regular tennis ball. He's had it quite a while, it's been really durable. He can collaspe a reg. tennis ball by chewing on it, it makes an obnoxious popping noise.
I've never seen the rubber donut holes, thanks for letting everyone know.
Glad everything went well with the surgery.
Those things look like industrial grommets that someone had left over and tried to pass off as pet items. If you were to design something from scratch for a pet to hold a bit of food, I can't imagine ever coming up with that design.
How is Corky doing now, Sue?
Is he recovering well?
Still need to wear his lampshade?
Sending big hugs to your sheepie-boy
with hopes for a full and quick recovery.
:ghug:

Our ball crazy Border Collie-mix is going to be bummed. After this happened to Corky, we threw away all of the tennis balls... it crossed our minds that they might be a little too small. I picked up some larger cloth ones they can play with outdoors and figure I'll just wash them when they get too cruddy. We're also looking for the large tennis balls but can't remember where we saw they...
Corky is doing very well!
I don't know when he swallowed them & all 9 to boot.
I do keep tabs on the toys & sort them often.
The mystery is that I sort of remember having the donuts more thank a year ago & haven't seen them since. They were never kept in their toy box however.
I know they couldn't have been in his stomach that long.
I guess this is a mystery that will never be solved.
I just threw all tennis balls away.
I am just so happy that he is okay.
I do think the donut people should at the very least pull these toys altogether & not lie about their ads. Paying Corky's vet bill would be nice too.

:D
Here is a link to QVC...it's a ball you can record your voice and put treat in...I have one and it's big and very hard plastic that I think even a OES can't ruin...both my former OES would eat anything anywhere and it was a constant watch whenever they were outside. We thought buying a huge bone from the butcher would be a safe treat....she just dug a crater in the backyard and buried it...what a mess...my OES and the yard. With Rosie being small I have only used nylabone to chew...she loves them and has a routine...when I ask her if she wants to eat she finds her nylabone and has to chew it for a minute before eating and if she's really happy and excited she will find it and chew it. The ball is great because you record your voice on it...at first Rosie was scared of it when she heard the recording but loved it afterwards.
As usual I forgot to paste the link for the toy...sorry...

I have something similar.
Fergus tries to kill it.
I am afraid to let him play w/ it.
I keep it in my closet & only take it out for Shelby she plays gently.
Also wanted to share that Corky doesn't have the awful "conehead"
Thx to Laurie Smith suggesting I get a ProCollar.
I found Corky's on Ebay b/c none of the stores in my area had xl.

We have these two stuffed toys with voiceboxes in them. One goes "HEYYYY" and the other one goes "WHOAAAA" and they make Clyde and Bear crazy. I had to take them away. But, I've found if they need to be distracted, I just squeeze one and whatever they were doing just stops!
ButtersStotch... I had 2 of something like that when Sami was LITTLE they loved it except for the one of a little girl crying thy ran from that one
Glad to hear Corky's doing well.
Thanks for posting that interesting elizabethan-collar, Sue.
I've never seen that one... pretty neat!
That inflatable collar looks excellently cool.

What happens when he lies down on his side?
I was wondering what would happen if the
other dogs tried to pull it off him... just thinking
ahead to what my ding-a-lings would do
Does it seem pretty durable?
I am looking at Corky now he is comfortably lying down.
Will post a photo.
It is very durable, wipes clean.
Shelby shows no interest in pulling it off Corky.
It stays on b/c you run the dogs collar through the loops.
The best part is that Corky can climb the stairs w/o me taking that awful cone off or holding it for him as he climbs stairs.
He can eat & drink more comfortably. He can scratch his ears too.
It's great!
Laurie Smith of Beardie/Neardie (BONE) Rescue told me about the collar.
If you wish to see the original ads for the Udder Donuts, click my camera icon & open the 3 pdf folders..
Deceptive company!
Sue, I am sorry for the late response to this thread. Glad to hear that Corky will be okay. How horrible.
Photos of "Beachboy" :D

Gosh, Corky needs a groomer ASAP!

:D :D :D
Awwwwwwwww...
bless his heart.
What a gooood boy! :D
Give him a big hug for me!
Oh Corky
So glad you are on the mend
Quite handsome in your life preserver too 8)
Does your mama inflate it like a balloon or did y'all buy it that way?
I haven't seen one of those
Always learn something here!
Hugs Big Boy
Diane
I destroyed our Udder Tug
http://www.helpingudders.com/images/Shop.h85.jpg
Made of black rubber donuts  (similar to Corky's)
but linked together by a red nylon rope
It wasn't the culprit in this case
BUT
I just didn't want anything wierd to happen :(
Like it coming apart!
While I was looking ...
Found a few things that needed to be tossed
Guess that is one way to make room for more
Diane....such spoiled pooches
It is inflatable. I can't stress how great this collar is!
I had never heard of it either.

Anyway, can you believe it has been 10 days since Corky's surgery?
He had his stitches out today, he no longer needs the collar.

I think Corky likes to live dangerously :D
While in the vet's waiting room he tried to attack a huge growling German Shepherd. Fortunately a very strong vet tech was holding him.
Corky Knievel? 8O
