can i get another dog

i have an oes that is 6 years old, when i got him had a lhasa apso as well, and since teddy my oes was the baby at the time he respected her. She passed away about a year ago, and i miss having a little dog. teddy is my baby, we love eachother so much and he is very spoiled and protective of me, i am just wondering if getting a little dog is a good idea, i would never want teddy to hurt a puppy, from jealousy. he is not a violent dog, but i dont know what he would think. He doesnt know how big he really is. he still sits on my lap, till i cant breathe. he sleeps in my bed with one arm over me like he is my husband or something, i just wondered if anyone has been in this situation.I really want a lap dog as well, but i never would want to hurt his feelings or put a puppy n harms way...

Hi there!
Sorry to hear that you lost your little pup. I can imagine that there is quite a void there :(

As for your current dog getting jealous of a potential new and smaller dog? Well it depends entirely on the dog. Do you ever have a friend's dog over for a "play date"? If you do, interact with that other dog and see how yours behaves.

In my own experience, Tucker is wonderful with other dogs, even very small ones. In fact, the two dogs he plays with most are no more than 10lbs, and Tucker is nearly 70lbs! He isn't the least bit jealous when another dog gives me affection and vica versa, and although he plays with them quite energetically, he is gentle and does not hurt them. I would definitely advise "testing" it out with some friends' dogs first, because like I said, every dog is different, just like people are, so you will only know if your dog is the jealous type by watching him in action.

Good luck, and keep us updated!
Take Teddy to a dog park, and while he is meeting other dogs, pick up someone else smaller dog and give him lots of affectionate attention in front of Teddy, to see how he reacts.
I have had this issue several times. I have yorkies and hubby has sheepies. When my Misty (yorkie) was 14 years old we lost our sheepie cross so hubby got another sheepie and she soon learned that the yorkie was the boss. When that yorkie died at 17 years our Katy was 3 years then and we introduced a yorkie pup into the family. Katy adored her, but we crated the yorkie a lot so they were never left alone in the same room unattended. I think Katy thought all yorkies were the boss anyway. Sadly we lost Katy last year her only being 6 at the time, and the yorkie then 3 so we have got Summer now(8 month old sheepie) and we had teething troubles as Summer was rough but nothing this forum didnt sort out. They are best friends now and my yorkie loves Summer particularly as she has got bigger! So go for it is what I say. I love my little lap dog! well both of them!
ps both in my avatar!
I am sorry to hear about your little dog, but unless I am mistaken you have a lap dog well at least he probably thinks he is one, there should be no trouble concerning a smaller dog or pup the sheepie normally adapts to everything but as advised take him to meet other dogs.
Hi, I have an OES who is 3 years old and had a very bad experiance with taking in another dog. My OES Cysco sleeps with me, sits on me, gets in between my boyfriend and me all the time. I wanted to get another dog because I thought that would help having a friend for Cysco and great for me because I love animals.
Well... let me tell you it was one fight after another over attention from both dogs. It got so bad I had to keep them in different rooms at all times or they would fight. Cysco weighs 100lbs and the pup St. Bernard would soon weigh more. I had to find a home for the St. Bernard which was one of the hardest things I had to do. With time and lots of research I found him a great home as "the only dog" and it worked out well.
I'm not sure if it was Cysco or the St. Bernard that had an issue with living with another dog but I can tell you, I'll never take another chance. It was all to painful.
I had a 10 yr old OES when I got a tibetan terrier...my OES was mad at me for about 2 weeks...wouldn't even look at me and in front of a group of people she went around the pool and crapped looking at us all...she had never done anything like this! Eventually she allowed the tt to lay beside her but she never would play or romp with her...just tolerated her. The tt loved her. She mourned for months after we lost her. I am now going to get another OES puppy in May...my tt is now 8 and very close to me....I am hoping she will mother the puppy and play with her as my tt is still very active at 8 whereas my OES at 10 wasn't very active. Here's hoping it will all work...my husband is hoping it will get the tt out of our bed at night...she slept on her bed for years and then we let her up one night...we are excited about adding another child...I really miss my OES and love the tt as well. The OES is alot easier to train and is far more laid back than the tt...believe it or not the tt is more stubborn and never gives up to get her way. I know two dogs are twice the work but also twice the love!

It sounds a bit like Cysco felt very protective over you, perhaps she was even the pack leader in the house. Letting him sleep on your bed and crawl all over you is giving him leadership, so maybe felt challenged by another dog. According to breederretriever.com, a website that gives what I believe to be fairly accurate descriptions of most dog breeds, rates the OESan 8 out of 10 for sociability with other pets, and I think most people would say this is quite accurate. But remember, like people, every single dog is different, and while the breed may have a certain likeliness of getting along with other dogs, it really comes down to the individual.
