How often to bathe?

I was told to only let Barkley have a bath "as little as Possible" because it's hard on her skin.. how often is as little as possible? I don't want the entire house to smell like a dog, as much as I love her :-)

I bath mine 2 or 3 times a year...and we have a similiar climate..

None has ever mentioned a smell, unless they are wet from snow or rain...
i bathe panda about every 6 weeks......

youll find that everyone is very different when it comes to bathing their dogs......

I agree 2 - 3 times a year is enough, we bath our girl twice a year although we do wash the white before a show. You will never stop the smell when they are wet but it does not last long
:D
At the moment, every 6 weeks or so, basically when the smell gets too much 8O :D We trim the feet (sorry-paw) hairs & cut his nails before the bath which seems to eliminate most of the corn chips smell lol
Chewie gets baths of his whites and underparts every week. He goes on visits as a therapy dog, so he HAS to be clean and good smelling. He also has a smell otherwise - destinkly a Chewie smell. Not a good one either!

He never has had any trouble with his coat or skin because of it. I do use products on him that cost more than most I use on myself, though....
Opinions differ so much here since in general, it seems we should only bathe a few times a year, but I find that to be unacceptable in my home unless she wanted to be an outside dog that no one is allowed to touch w/o washing their hands

If they play in the mud/rain or
you have an active lifestyle w/them or
if they smell like dog/sweat/ick or
you're just an anal clean freak like myself 8)

then it's time for a bath.

edit: I've never had issues w/dry skin either and also use expensive grooming products
Barney is mostly an indoor dog, or when we walk he stays on the concrete/asphalt, so he doesn't usually get very 'dirty.' But he does sometimes get a little stinky. I'd say we bathe Barns about 4 times a year, give or take (we usually do it in conjunction with haircuts). Oh, and we mostly bathe him just so he gets that fresh-from-the-groomer fluffiness...not always to stop stink.
Mine play outside fopr an hour or so each day regardless of the weather. We probably bathe once a month during "mud season" and about every six weeks other wise. if they swim in the lake they might get an extra bath. the only problem we have with dry skin is when the heat is on. It isn't so much the smell in the house but the smell in the car - that sends them to the tub!
We bathe Tucker with dog shampoo about every 6 weeks or so, but if he's very dirty we'll just stick him in the tub and rinse him off with water alone - you'd be surprised how clean you can get them just with water!
I bathe Pearl every other week. Since she is a therapy dog, she needs to be clean and fresh for her visits. She is 10 years old and I have been doing this for the last 7 years. I use quality shampoo and conditioner and have never had any type of skin or coat problems.

Cos is bathed once a month....

And Heart.................well you know...........It may be 3 times a day or once a week or once a month depending on what she gets into....
Only as often as I have to :D

Lately Izzie has been getting leg and belly baths almost once a week, but only because of all the snow we have had here. With the melting snow she starts to kick stuff onto her legs and belly. They have been adding sand to the salt on the ground and that gets really messy.
Thanks for all the feedback!

We have a lot of snow here too, and I work at home so Barkley gets to play outside a lot during the day, and we go for at least one walk a day.. so maybe I'll try bathing her without shampoo every other bath so we can do it more often.. we bought expensive dog shampoo too, but I've only given her one bath so far because I didn't want to hurt her skin. She's almost 17 weeks old now.
I think I bathed mine much more as puppies - they were always dirty :) and it is a training experience for them - just use the right shampoos and rinses and you should be fine.

My girls are on Heart's bath schedule! I make sure to use a shampoo that has aloe and chamomile, and no "detergents" to help prevent any skin irritations from over washing.

I've been looking at trying a new line of bath products from Isle of Dog; says its formulated to be safe for daily washings, if necessary.
For the most part, after the messy puppy stage, we tend to bathe about 2 or 3 times a year.

However, if someone gets muddy feet, they at least get a feet bath. In my climate, it is often muddy and cold at the same time, so I do try to minimize the baths because of drying time. I don't own a dog dryer and I'm not a neat freak. I don't normally think of my dogs as being smelly unless they have dingleberries or have gotten into something.
Other than sheepieshake, I think we bathe most of any of the respondents here - at least once a month....all three of them.

One of them needs it more often than the others - she has a different coat than the boys...more oil production I think. It's been four weeks since the last bath, and Lacy STINKS. She's going to the groomer tomorrow.

Mine are all inside dogs...I walked in the house yesterday afternoon after they'd been in for a couple hours while we were out and I nearly choked - ew, this house smells like dirty dogs!

I bathe them once myself between trips to the groomer every 6-8 weeks.
My dogs are bathed weekly....they have had no problems with dry skin ect.

Weekly! So how many days a week do you spend washing dogs?
Twice a year is about it, and whites before a show.
Twice a year all over and whites at least every fortnight. Over washing a sheepie leads to coat matting and skin problems.

If they have not got into anything tooooo bad then twice a year should be sufficient. With just whites on a regular basis, that is undercarriage, around the dingle dangles and bottie, beard and paws. Groomed at least once a week with a good grooming spray, keeps them smelling fresh and removes debris from the coat and freshens them up

Over washing all over leads to coats matting as you are removing the texture and oils in their coats and leaving them dry and brittle.

Have you tried this line???? I HAVE and I can tell you it is GREAT!!! The self dog wash I go to (every other week) just started carrying this ---I use the shampoo, conditioner and the finishing spray. Pearl's coat is so soft ---NO static....NO sparks.... It smells great too!!!
( I am going to see if they have a whitener)

not yet, but I have been researching it and I think I am going to order the puppy line.
Re: the Isle of Dog products -
I have No. 16, the White Coat formula with evening primrose oil. I have had it about a year. On Chewie, I find it works about the same as the Bio Groom white shampoo. But, the Isle of Dog costs a LOT more. And I don't care for the smell at all.

But when I used the I of D on Simon my basset, I noticed a very noticeable difference. It made his whites sparkle!

It is very concentrated - it goes a long way.
Dawn mentions the Isle of the Dog products....THEY ARE GREAT!!! Best of all they don't dry out the hair or the skin.

Luca gets his whites washed once a week and in winter I do get concerned about the additional dry cold air but I have yet to have a problem. We dilute the shampoo quite a bit because it makes it easier to dispense it, it's not as strong, and you don't use it up quite as fast.

I also use a conditioner...also diluted so he doesn't get greasy.

For puppies I have used Johnson and Johnson tearless formula again diluted, because I was bathing him EVERY week and sometimes twice a week becasue he would get SOOO dirty.

Unless you notice a lot of issues with your puppies skin I wouldn't be too worried about bathing. You want a clean dog or your house starts to smell like dog...so bath as often as you feel comfortable doing so with that in mind.
Oscar gets a full bath every other week, and partial baths (face, butt, undercarriage, paws) about three times a week. Like rdf's dog, Oscar has more than normal oil production due to his multiple skin and digestive issues. I can tell when we are approaching the two-week mark, as his coat next to the skin gets pretty oily - yuk. He is shaved down every 6 weeks, so we can stay on top of any potential skin problems.

Laurie and Oscar, the Cleanest Sheepie in Libertyville 8)
Miss Maisey...I bathe her a lot... She is a Pig in Sheep's clothes...so to speak....Not only that, but she will get in the bath and bark at the faucet until we do.
When she was about 6 months, I was standing in the shower, and usually she waits outside a long the tub, like a furry bathmat...But all of a sudden I heard the tell tale sheepie gallop and all of a sudden the shower curtain was blown in by Sheepie-power and Maisey was standing there looking at me like "What, you're not happy to see me Mom?"
My hubby laughed his butt off...till I threatened to make him bobtail.
So like Heart's bath schedule, unless requested by Maise...
I do try to only bathe her once every 3 weeks in the winter, cuz it gets real cold up here....
The above post was me...hehe oops!!!
as far as "smell" goes, (unless they got into something stinky) it has alot to do with what they eat. i noticed the difference with my other doggie when i started feeding holistic food. peeps has always had holistic food, and i think she smells like roses because she can do no wrong--says my oldest daughter mockingly.
I wash Sprockets white fur about once a month, but as far as a full bath goes... he doesnt really need one. He doesnt stink and I brush him everyday. His white fur gets a little stained from being outside, so when he starts to look a little dingy he takes a quick paw, face and neck shower. That seems to be all it takes to keep him looking clean and presentable.
I bathe Buddy every 2 weeks when it is nice and dry outside. In the winter and when it is wet and muddy he gets one atleast once a week. If he gets into something it is more often. :) I use expensive shampoo and like some else here more than what my own costs. I have never had any problems with his skin drying out. I like when he is all clean and smells good. It seems easier to me to keep his white clean when I wash him more often.
