How large should 8 week old OES be? I dont trust my breeder.

How large is an 8 week old oes? I am worried that a puppy I am buying is not the age represented.

It can vary quite a bit depending on where the pup is from and if it's male or female. I will say that if you're apprehensive about someone lying to you about something before you even purchase the puppy, I'd be concerned about the breeder in general.

If this is the case, then you have a serious issue with that breeder, and I would strongly suggest that you reconsider your purchase.
Is the pup larger or smaller than you think it should be? I have two boys almost nine months old and though they are close in height they aren't in weight. Both are healthy so it's not a concern for me, but if you're concerned and haven't even gotten the pup home yet iwould say reconsider. Is the breeder a member of OESCA?
If it is a registered breeder then they are bound by a code of ethics and no pup leaves the nest at a bare minumum of 8 weeks old, most reputable breeders keep them longer then 8 weeks as it is good for the pups and learning social skills from mom and the litter.

If not a OESCA registered breeder then be on your guard as at least with registered breeders they have a "Code of Ethics" they are bound by and if they break that they are de-registered.

Puppy mills and BYB can do what they like and send pups to there homes with no rules as to what age they go. Which is so not good for the pups.

Hard to tell what size an 8 week should be, depends on the lines and mom, dad & ancestors.

They should have little pot bellies, be covered in good condition, no bones, ribs etc sticking out and no discharge from the eyes, there breath should smell sweet and coat nice and shiny and just a picture of good health.

If any doubts then seek a registered breeder from the OESCA for something that will hopefully ensure all the best health wise & nature wise for your future fur kid.
It really isn't fair for me to say that I dont trust my breeder. I don't know them as I bought her from out of state. It has been years since I had an oes and just now ready to have more. I am probably being overly cautious because I want this to go well. I didn't find your site until after I bought her and didn't realize there was an association for the breeders. So far they have been great and have sent me a recent picture with my name written next to her. She looks great, just lots bigger and older than I remembered. Thank you for your advice.
Hi mchalkley,
I'd recommend that you look through the Pictures forum - if you scan the titles, you'll find puppy pictures. Here's a thread with a picture of an adorable 8 week old:

We got Bailey at 10 weeks and he was definitely bigger than this 8O

And you should register! It's free. And we'll love your dog, no matter who the breeder is :hearts:
Aren't there developmental landmarks to help gage a puppy's age? I couldn't find one, but surely there is a list of behaviors for pups just as there is for kids. Anybody know?

This is Nigel at exacly 8 weeks on the day we brought him home from the airport.

another picture on his first day.

He is 9 months old now and weighs around 70 lbs. His dad weighs 100 lbs, but they can definately be bigger than Nigel was at 8 weeks, and slightly smaller too. Breeding also plays a big part. How big are the parents?
when Tonks and Luna came home they were 8 and 7 weeks old. They were both around the 10 pound mark. But the dam and the sire were both on the small side (in my opinion).

here is a photo from the day we brought them home:

sigh... they look so fluffy and clean.

edit: I found one with me in it, for size comparison:

Thanks for all the help. I am so sorry about worrying. My puppy looks just about the right size from your pictures and she is healthy. I told the breeder that I had just panicked because after buying my puppy, I found awful things stated about her on a rip-off report. This scared me! The internet is a good thing, but it could sure be used to mess someone up as well.
