Can a dog drink with a Gentle Leader on?

Our doggy day care uses Gentle Leaders as a barking/obnoxiousness deterrent. When I came to pick the boys up yesterday, Clyde had one on. When I asked the guy working how long he'd had it on, he said "I don't know, I got here at 1 and he had it on." It was almost 5:30 when I picked them up.

I don't mind that Clyde has to be muted. I know when he's excited, he loves to bark like an idiot but I also don't think that it's necessary to leave it on him for the whole day. All that aside, my bigger concern is, can they drink water with one of those on? I gave my Gentle Leader away and I didn't get a chance to see how it was fitted on him and I couldn't do a test when I got home.

Before I make an angry phone call to the owner, I want to make sure I have my facts straight.

How does the gentle leader act as a deterrent?
Do they just pull on it when he's out of line (barking)?

Yes they can drink water w/no problems
I guess? Maybe also so he can't open his mouth as wide for maximum volume? Honestly I haven't used one in years. I thought the Gentle Leader fit firmly around the muzzle so I was worried that he couldn't open his mouth.
oh they can eat, drink, bark, fight - the only thing it does is give you control if a leash is attached.
A gentle leader is not a muzzle. The nose loop fits loosely behind the mouth and does not restrict a dogs ability to drink, bark or pant. I think that the only caution in leaving one on is that it might get caught on something, but any collar poses some risk of that. That said, I still take it off when not out for a walk.

The thing I like about them is that with a stubborn breed (anyone know of a breed like that?) they bring the head around naturally so that the dog's focus of attention is brought back to you when they are pulling or trying to go after something that they shouldn't.
I can't imagine how the Gentle Leader would be a bark deterent? :?

But yeah, they can eat & drink just fine with them on. :)
Hmm, maybe they are applying corrections or maybe even to lead him away if he's being a tool. The dogs aren't allowed to wear collars there (so nothing gets stuck or pulled) so perhaps it's a way to have control over him if need be. I have no idea. I feel better knowing that he can drink and stuff.

Our day care is normally pretty good and they love going. The owner is great and most of the staff is good, too. I just recently switched from Fridays to Thursdays ( so I can watch Lost in peace) and I think that the Thursday crew isn't as good as Friday, not to mention it seems like the dog group dynamic is different. We may have to suck it up and switch back to Fridays again.

Thanks everyone!
I wonder if they use the gently leader as a distraction rather than an actual means to prevent barking. Like Clyde will feel it around his mouth and will remember not to bark? Something like that? I don't know.
Ok, I am a newbie, and just found the gentle leader, but it is a harness that goes around the chest and back, no?
I love it because Maize was pulling the heck out of me on her walks, and aside from buying a prong collar, it was the only way to control the pulling.
The gentle leader I have is like a harness...that crosses the front legs if they pull?!?
How would that stop barking?
I don't see how a gentle leader could be used for anything other than a training aid for walking manners, but I don't think they'd have a hard time eating or drinking etc with it on....

I think Gentle Leader makes a few different types of devices, but the standard one that everyone is talking about actually goes on the face/head. It fits loosely over the muzzle and around the back of the head, and clips from the muzzle to the collar where you then clip your leash. The intention of it is so that when you're walking, the leash is attached to the face not the neck, so when you very gently pull the leash a little, you re-direct the face and therefore the dog back into the desired direction.
I have to agree that it sounds more like a distraction then anything else. BUT is it ok that they put it on him without your permission? The very fact that you are wondering why and how they use it is rather strange. In my opinion that should all be explained before-hand. If it was me and I went to pick up Tucker and he was wearing something without my permission, I'd be a little upset...maybe I'm just too uptight, but would you let a child daycare randomly put something on your child?

I know it's something that they use around the day care so they idea that it was on him wasn't a big deal. I was more upset that they had it on him for so long and I didn't really like that it was left on him when the second shift came in-- they didn't even know why it was on in the first place. I'm sending an e-mail to the owner today just to understand what the reasoning is behind using the GL in the day care.
If fitted properly you should be able to slip two fingers under the strap the fits around the mussel. However, an overzealous kennel worker might not necessarily put it on correctly. An overly tight gentel leader would work like a mussel and keep the dog from opening his/her mouth. Next time you go in take a look at the GL and see if it is on tight or loose. If it's too tight it can restrict air flow. Also, the directions on my GL stated that it should not be used for more than 20 mins and always under direct supervision. I think the GL could do some harm if used improperly.

I think i have posted about this before - trainers are starting to move away from the GL because they can cause injury. they are a training tool not a solution.
