NIU Shootings

Northern Illinois University is only about 40 miles from where I live. One of the woman who works for me has a daughter there. She is fine.

I'm so stunned by the shooting, as I always am when I hear of these senseless shootings.

Not to sound naive, but I just don't understand these things. What is happening in our world that the children are so angry.

So many lives are damaged by an event like this. Don't the shooters ever give that thought, or do you believe they are so mentally ill, they just don't know or care about the consequences of their actions?

Please say a prayer for all the people involved.

Once again the shooting news is so devastating. My Aunt & Uncle live in Dekalb and the strange coincidence is that a few of my cousins from Dekalb moved to Littleton, CO right before the shootings there happened.

I don't get why the kids are acting out this way too. I'm sure their environmental influences are a big part of it, but it also amazes me how they end up getting their hands on so many weapons.
I was so sad to hear the news as well. I just don't understand why these people are so angry.

The world is such a scary place these days. My husband and I decided a few years ago that we would not have children, afraid of what kind of world they will have to live in. Honestly, I hope it gets better, for my neice's sake, but I'm just not sure it will.
While the shooter may have been mentally ill his entire life - we don't know much about him at this point - I did hear a news clip that said he was a 27 year old man. Certainly not a troubled or angry "kid". :?
Every time this happens I weep for where our world has gone. I can honestly say the most "impactful" event in my life was the school shooting in Littleton Colorado. I have never looked at the world quite the same since that happened.

Every time it is repeated in another community my heart just breaks.
Mr. J's friend's (co-worker) fiancee was at the school when it happened. Talk about close call. 8O

It always touches the heart to hear about something like this. :(
I don't know. I think the crazies have always been out there, but now they have more access to media that gives them new ideas, hence, copycats. They see the attention media gives a shooting and then when the time comes for them to act out, they remember what they saw. There's an interesting book I read a couple of years ago called the Copycat Effect, which says that the media triggers a lot of these kind of attacks. (Actually, the author has a website http://www.copycateffect.com/) It definitely made some good points.
Yeah, I agree with Jill.

It is so sad though
I heard a news report not too long ago that said we should be focusing on telling the stories of the victims NOT the shooters. That by doing that you take the "power" of the press and the infamy away from the shooters.
Still having a daughter in college and knowing that her chosen profession is teaching, every time I hear about something like this, I die a little more inside. I can't live her life, but I can't stop worrying either.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.
My SIL and her family live about 10 minutes from DeKalb. The town is still thought of as a rural and safe area. I definitely think the media needs to re-examine how they cover these events. Deep down every person wants to be remembered for something and the media gives crazy people ideas.

I know what you mean Chris. My son teaches Physics in a Washington area High School. Last summer he took us to see his school and I was amazed at the security system and the presence of armed guards. Instead of making me feel like he was safe it made me worry all the more!

Oh, my. I never thought about this point...Both my boys are into going into being teachers...High school.....
My heart goes out to the victims and families. I agree we should only cover the accomplishments of the victims in the media. It would take away some of the notority of the shooter.
Kids today are bombarded by violence, on TV, movies, video's, computer games, etc.
They see so many violent deaths portrayed, absloutely hideous acts of violence. It only takes a young person with sociopathic tendencies, rage or psychological illness to destroy so many lives.
This is so senseless :( I lived in DeKalb many years ago and remember it as a small, friendly community, now changed forever because of one evil person.
I have worked in the same school for 14 years. The change in our security protocol over the years is chilling.

One concern I have is that in trying to protect our children, a normal parental desire, we are not allowing them to fail at anything. Not learning how to cope and adjust to disappoint/failure leads to inappropriate responses when you finally have to deal with it.

Thoughts and prayers for the victims, families and friends.
