Ontario's Excellent Sheepdogs' Festival - a.k.a. OES FEST!

CALLING ALL ONTARIO SHEEPIE LOVERS AND OWNERS!!

As was suggested by Craig (thank you!), I have created this poll to get an indication of when we would like to run this event, which I have tentatively but oh-so-creatively titled Ontario's Excellent Sheepdogs' Festival, or OES Fest for short!

Even if you already commented on your preferred date, if you wouldn't mind re-submitting your preference via this poll I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you, and I am looking forward to seeing you all! Please feel free to invite other sheepies whose owners are not on this forum (do such people exist?! :p) and let me know of their preferences as well.

ALSO - I think everyone so far is excited about Amber's generous offer of hosting this event. I think it would be fun to keep it fun and simple...what exactly would you like to do? I'm thinking maybe going to Naigara in the late morning/afternoon to walk around - maybe there's even an outdoor place we and the dogs could go to for lunch. Then maybe just an afternoon/evening of fun, let the dogs run around and tire each other out, and a potluck bbq for supper? If you have some other suggestions, please chime in!!!

WAHOO! OES FEST IS GOING TO ROCK!!!

I put June 7/8 just because by this time we are all dying to do stuff that involves summer! But if there is a tie of any sort, remove this vote....It really does't matter.

And pot luck sounds good. Even just sandwiches to avoid cooking and clean-up...

If anyone is interested I can bring some simple PCV jumps and so some simple agility stuff....But this would really only work if there is a small area we could separate off.

Woooo Hoooooo! Let's party on!
So, are there only nine of us? If not, the rest of you should get on with the voting for a date.

As of this post, June 7/8 has a strong lead, with June 21/22 still in contention (then again, if there are more than 4 more Ontario Members lurking out there, any of the dates are still in the mix). Just so the rest of you don't feel left out (though, Ontario is the cool place to be), cross-border OES and owners are obviously be encouraged to attend - just be sure to bring JIF crunchy peanut butter. There were a few of us Ontarians who crashed the Michigan party last year, and it was a blast.

People do know that posting is allowed in polls, right? We had this nice little back-and-forth discussion going on, and then opened up the poll to make it easier to keep track of, and, BAM - no more talk...
I voted for June 7/8 so, since I was winning, I thought all was cool. But if you want to talk, Craig, I'll talk to you.
If not, there should be! I am new to the forum and was just wondering. I don't think I could come to Canada, as that would be a reaally long trip for the puppy - although it is tempting!!!!
Helloooooooo Ontarians and friends....where aaaaaare youuuuuuu??
Don't get me wrong, I'm quite happy with June 7/8 as the winner, I just wanted to be sure that this didn't get buried too far down the list, be forgotten, and have just me show up in Welland.
i voted for 7/8 as well...

just because i could
7/8 is unfortunately out for us as there is a dog show that weekend, and it's in the opposite direction so unless oes are on early in the morning I wouldn't have time to make the drive to Amber's.
It would normally take us almost 3 hours to get to Amber's (going the speed limit  ), this would mean a minimum 3.5-4 hours drive for us after the show if we left from there (which I am still considering depending on what time oes are on whichever day is chosen)
No one else wants July?????
Darn you all. That would have been perfect. I can do June 7/8, but my mother just planned our Engagement Party for the following weekend, which would mean a 7 hour drive for OES Fest and the following weekend a 5 hour drive to Newmarket.
BUT if that's the favourite, we'll make it work.
Well Duncan and Delilah and the 2 rterrorist here may be up Amber's...... but I will be in Spain at the Euro OES show and then we are thinking a Mediter. Cruise for a week afterwards......
July would have been great because school is out!!!! Is there something closer in Texas?
Yes! Val with Heart can tell you about Sheepie Poolooza (SP???) in St. Louis MO................
Since Amber is hosting this event I was just wondering if anyone checked with her to see if this date was good??? I thought there was mention that she might be participating in a dog show that weekend.
Did anyone find out from Amber what date is best for her? I'm not sure if she has her show schedule set yet and most likely Gabe and I and probably Jill would be at a show with her. Jill, like how I'm planning YOUR summer

You know I plan things a day before so having someone plan for me is nice. :)
Sorry I have been absent from this discussion recently...I have been so busy but things are not as hectic now. Anyways, any of those dates work for me, so I am leaving it to the consensus of everyone who plans on attending. Once we have a date set we can start planning our itinerary.
We need to make some more plans for this event to get everything all sorted out here...

Last time I checked, we were waiting to decide on the weekend we will be holding this Ontario event. When I first posted this in a different thread, there were a lot more people who showed interest than the few who have voted. I'm thinking perhaps that we should set a sort of deadline to vote on a date and then start planning after that. Perhaps April 1st?

If you are all anything like me, calendars for the summer months are already starting to fill up, and I want to make sure we can get the most amount of people here as possible.

As a recap, so far June 7/8 was the favourite weekend, with June 21/22 as the second favourite. The other two choices were July 5/6 and July 19/20 (my personal favourite and request, however I think the consensus was that it might be too hot for dogs in full coat at this point). But if there is a show that June weekend and a few of the already dimished number of people can't make it then, perhaps we should reconsider.

Thoughts???
I'd like to come but have no idea yet what the June show schedule will be. I think you should just pick a a date and go from there.
I've already voted but perhaps we should wait until the June show schedule comes out (does anyone know when that will be??) to decide on a weekend, I think a lot of the forum members that were interested in attending show their dogs.
Sure - we'll wait until that comes out, assuming it's some time in the next few weeks...will it be??
Aren't most shows scheduled well in advance (i.e., 6 months or more)? I would expect that most people who plan to show their dogs in June would already know what's scheduled, but may not specifically have selected which shows to attend.

Given that most Ontario shows are likely already scheduled [I know that Kitchener is in May, Monarch (Dorchester), Ontario County (Orono) and Erie Shores (Caledonia) are in June, Sarnia is in July, etc...], and some of those showing have expressed an inabity to make some dates, I think the sooner we decide, the more likely people will be able to fit it into their schedules. We'll never make everyone happy.

I think that April 1 is a good time to make a firm decision on date, to give everyone sufficient time to make plans (since the leading date is only two months from then) for activities, hotels, travel, etc...
I agree, I think you should just go ahead and pick a date and whoever can make it makes it, whoever can't, doesn't.
I will be showing at the Hamilton Show June 27-29th, so anything else is great for me.

Lets make April 1st the cutoff so we can start planning!

Can't wait!
wow I am tempted I have family I haven't seen in the St. Catherine and Barrie areas.
I am a 20 minute drive from St.Catharines........ :D
I am right in between the two!
Well, I told Norm i don't want to go to Barcelona and for him to plan on coming 'home' for his R&R...... but in adding up his dates, i'm not so sure he will be allowed to be in the USA for his whole 15 dates..... we need to keep some open in case of an emergency....... so, Amber...... depending upon a) dates b) Norm's dates and c) if we are having puppies at that time......... :? (depending upon Deliah again) we may or may not be there! Know the 2 will be there sometime around then for you..........

Ali
Ok, April 1 = Decision Day!!!

Here is what I propose, please let me know your thoughts.

Since there are several shows going on in June and people aren't quite sure of the exact dates, perhaps we could make it July instead??

I say July 19...reason being my summer is already filling up so quickly (oy), and I'll already be in Newmarket that weekend, making it a 2 hour drive instead of a 7 hour drive. This would be absolutely marvellous, becuase I could stay at my parents' and wouldn't have to book a place to stay overnight either, saving a bit of moola.

Any objections to July 19? Who's in??? Please reply either way so we can start making a list of who to expect.

Thanks!
Sound's good tome, actually whenever as we have decided we don't want to pay the price of Euro's to go to Barcelona........ Canada and even Mexico are much better for us at this time!
Here is my show schedule.

JUNE 5-8 - ERIE SHORES SHOW
JUNE 26-28 - HAMILTON
JULY 11-15 - WOODSTOCK

Who else shows that our dates would affect?
I should also add that I can still do the first week-end in June even if I have a show if thats what everyone decides on. I just won't enter that day.
Unfortunately, July doesn't work well for us. Enjoy the party!
I think July will be too hot for the dogs, and folks might be away on vacation plans etc.

I'm still good for June, but can try to make it other weekends, too.
I kinda agree that July is too hot.

We need to come to some sort of conclusion everyone.
I thought the decision was for the 19th of July?

If not then Amber should probably set the date since she's hosting (at least, I think that's the plan?). In any case, I agree - a date needs to get choosed up real quick so people can get all decidey-like on attendance.
Hi everyone,
Why don't you all just do June some time then and I'll come next year.
I have so much going on in June and I just don't feel that we can squeeze in something else, not to mention the fact that as a teacher I'll still be working in June so July would have been optimal.

Truth be told, I'm a little surprised that we're still debating the date. I suggested this whole event months ago, and then I thought the consensus was for me to pick a date and whoever could go could go. So I picked a date, but we're still debating. So if June works well for you people who have show dogs in full coat and busy show schedules in June, then have the OES Fest and I'll see you next year.
Maybe we could organize it better next year for the spring or fall. The idea was to have it in the summer when it will of course be hot, so I didn't think this would be an issue.

Keep me posted.
No! You must be there! I can make July 19th work!

....My dogs will be in a puppy cut anyway...
This has absolutely nothing to do with a show schedule for me, or the fact that my dogs are in coat (not all of them are by the way) I was actually the one that suggested we do it on a week-end where there IS a local show to give us something else to do. I cant remember who but someone else posted they did not want it a week-end of a show.

Nevertheless, since some of the activities that I had thought of doing included the Niagara Falls walk,a fun match, and generally being outdoors all day, I thought June would be better vs July for the comfort of the dogs and also us humans.

But since it was your idea to bring us all together, I think you should be able to attend, and if July is the only time you can attend, the thats when it should be. I am regretfully however going to have to forfeit hosting the event in July. If I had a larger house we could all fit in to cool off I would have no problem. Plus too it looks like I may possibly have pups on the ground that month.

Sorry!
Ok, not to worry.
This is far more difficult than I had anticipated. When I suggested we do this I suggested summer, and since nobody mentioned right at the start that it would be a problem with the heat, I didn't consider it.

If someone else wants to try to plan something, then go ahead.

Otherwise, we'll just try again next year.

I wanted to plan this for a weekend in Toronto, then Amber offered to host it (which is still much appreciated, even if it won't work), and I was under the assumption that any of the initial dates would work, especially when I was told to go ahead and just pick one, but now they won't work. I thought those of us with pups in puppy cut could all go camping or something instead, but booking something now would be too late.

So maybe you can all go in June to Amber's, and honestly, I'll just see you next year.
LOL welcome to trying to arrange something for a group and make everyone happy.

Don't feel bad, I've been through it before too.
I am kind of surprised that even tho the majority of the people voted to have it on the weekend of June 7/8(which we couldnt attend-dog show :( ) and then the date was changed to July 19 when early on people expressed concerns on the heat in July for dogs....IMO clipped or full coat, July is too hot to have it. July in Welland can be very hot, maybe people living further north in Ontario did not realize that. I was at a show this weekend with several other people who would have liked to attend the get-together....we were all disappointed it has been cancelled.
Maybe another time we can have it. I'd offer to have it here but we live too far for most people to travel. Amber's place was kind of more central for most people to attend.
No worries, we'll have a Michigan event in September or October so you guys can all come to that. :)
Wait - you're changing the timing of the Michigan Picnic? I remember it being in early August last year (and, conveniently for us Ontario folks, on a Canadian Long Weekend)...
Please don't forget to let us know the date....we'd love to attend!!!
I realize July is hot and I am aware that some people expressed this fact early on, however I did not think that meant that it was completely out of the question. Perhaps that is my mistake. If Amber still wants to have the event and you all want to go, then go. I'm not cancelling the event, I'm just saying I"m not attending. You can still get together in June.
By the way, Petawawa isn't THAT far north, it's just as hot here as there. I just thought we could all get matching belly tops and make a real statement ;)

Was it? I don't remember anything. It was flippin' hot though-- that I remember. Or was that the year before that it was so darn hot?

I was hoping this year, to have it at my mom's place. We'd have lots of shade, a pond and room to run but there's no fences so it would only be good for dogs that can be trusted off leash.

Last year was kind of toasty during the day, but not too bad - dogs had shade and kiddie pools, and upright folks had lots of food and real smarties.

I'm certainly up for some pond, running, no fences and shade. Barkley would probably also like those things, but mostly playing/lounging with his "biggie-me", Clyde.

Petawawa certainly isn't that far north, but then again, I'm originally from over on the north shore of Lake Superior. So, in my head, it's pretty much just a long way east, even though I'm in Southern Ontario now.

Me in a belly top would certainly make a statement, but perhaps not the one you were hoping to make...
I don't even know what a belly top is, but if I wore one, could you see my tick scar? 8O
Only if you matched it with a low rise thong.
Hmmmmm, I didn't think the tick bit me that low! If there was a danger of my underwear covering the tick bite area, I'd be in pain from a massive wedgie! 8O
OMG there are some things about the forum members I just would be better off NOT knowing!
LOL!!
I was waiting to see if anyone was brave enough to respond.....
