help...my pup seems to be unaware that he is peeing

Hello all. Memphis is 4 months old.
When we go outside and I ask him to go pee he will do it just about everytime. There are times when we are inside that he seems totally unaware that he is peeing. He will be playing, pee at some point (I very rarely catch him in the act) and continue playing, getting it all over himself, etc. He can go up to 6 to 8 hours at night no problem. After drinking about a cup of water he seems to pee 4 or 5 times, usually outside as we will go for a walk after this. I have had urine tests done (discovered a bladder infection that is cleared up). He has dilute urine often, but it is very concentrate in the morning. I had a blood pannel done and all is normal. I am now considering having a liver test of some sort done to see if it is a shunt or other liver problem. I have also heard of persistant urachus in puppies. Anyone with similar problems? Otherwise he is super healthy, growing like crazy, eating well and excelling in puppy school. Thank goodness for enzyme products! Thanx for any help.

Hmmm...I don't know much about this but to me it does seem a little off.
How often does he go out to pee? Does he give you any indication at all that he has to go? Whimpering, a little dance, sniffing the ground, circling, anything like that????
He's very cute! Can we get some more pics, please?! :D
Hi, Memphis pees when he gets up in the morning and then he will eat breakfast at about 5-6am and then we go back to bed for an hour or two. We then get up and go for 30min - 1hr walk and he will pee about 4 or 5 times. I will usually let him out a few times before lunch. He never asks to go out. I think I just took him out so much in the first month he never has felt the need. Although he will ask out for a poop, if we arn't paying attention. No dance or sniffing thing with the peeing, it just seems to happen when he is busy playing or something. After lunch around 11ish he gets another 15 - 30 min walk by my husband when I go off to work, I think he probably pees a fair ammount then too. If my husband is home he puts him out often and there doesn't seem to be too many accidents unless he is busy. If our son is the only one home there seems to be more because you know kids! When I get home in the evening he has dinner about 5 and then if I don't take him out to walk soon after he will sometimes have accidents, if I take him for a walk he will pee again 4or 5 times during the walk. Usually one more before bed at around 9 ish and then he is good untill morning. Not sure what is up....it almost seems like it happens more after meals which may sound like a liver/protein issue maybe. I am going to keep trying to work with him untill 6 months and if no change then I will have another test done to see if it is a protein issue. He is sooo normal and healthy in every other way I just don't know. Seems too that these pees happen after he consumes a large ammount of water with his meals, so maybe just a small bladder?

I will post some pictures - these sheepies are truly gorgeous, my last dog was a OES/Border collie cross - very smart, but not neurotic, and supper funny! What a great combination!

Thanks for all your help
Dawn
Hi Dawn

A few questions...

What is your reaction when you find a puddle?
What is your reaction if you catch him in the act?
What is your reaction when he pees outside?
What do you say or do while he is peeing outside?
At 4 months old, he just sounds like a peer. When my boy was that age, I had the same concerns as you and we also had a panel of tests done to make sure it wasn't JRD or anything serious. Turned out he loved water, loved to pee and just didn't get the balance right of remembering when to pee all the time. We'd be playing, he'd be super excited and then, he'd run, stop and pee, like "Oh, no, I waited too long!" We watched his water intake and monitored his habits, using a proactive approach to going outside even when it seemed like it wasn't absolutely necessary. Their bladders aren't all the way mature early on so they don't always have total control even though they know they should be going outside.

Just when I thought we'd never stop having accidents in the house, at 6 months old, something clicked and never had a problem again. In fact, now he's like a camel and will hold it forever!

Good luck!
Sounds completely normal to me. They just have to pee more when they are active throughout the day,, and also have access to water. Both of our male sheepies took until five months of age to be reliable with house training, though Quincy held it all night, every night from 12 weeks old. And in the middle of a play session - forget it! They would just squat where they stood, dump a gallon on my carpet, and resume playing. 8)

When Oscar would pee in the house, we would try to get him out, but sometimes he'd potty so quickly that we'd just clean it up, no fuss. Then we would take him out frequently, give him the potty sign when he peed outside, and give him his favorite treat the very second he peed outside. He learned that he got the best treats when he pottied outside, and it didn't take long for that to sink in. :) We haven't had an issue since.

This too shall piss....... I mean pass..... 8)

Thanks again, you guys have given me more faith that it is nothing more serious. It seems to be getting better all the time, mainly because I take him out so often  !

Answers to Mel's questions:
When I find a puddle I have no reaction, I just clean it up when he is not looking.
If I catch him in the act, I try and scoop him up, say uh uh, outside, and take him out quickly.
When he pees outside I say yeah, good boy go pee outside and give him a treat.

He know what pee means as 80% of the time when I take him outside and ask him to pee he does so....maybe just for that treat, as he is extremely food motivated!

Last nite he was laying down, in a very mellow mood, half sleeping, half chewing on a bone, and started to pee, this time I caught him and he seemed a little more aware it was happening this time, because he stopped and looked at it like, what the heck and then sniffed and licked it - YUCK! I then took him out side (see above) and he peed right away when I asked.

Crazy animals - I will continue to monitor and if all is not better by 6 months when we neuter I will have more testing done.

GREAT! So many people yell at their dogs and rub their noses in the pee, and then ask, "Why is he peeing under the couch?" or "Why does he run away from me when I approach him?" Well....duh! Those things make no sense to the dog! You have obviously done your research on this matter, which definitely leads me to believe that perhaps puppy is just a little slower on the normal spectrum of housetraining behaviour.
Mel,

I guess I should have mentioned I worked as a manager at an SPCA for 12 years, took many courses on animal behaviour, etc, I have owned dogs all my life and believe in positive reinforcement - it really works much better than alternative methods, as I am sure you would agree.

One quick question for you. By any change are you Canadian? I noticed Tucker had on a newfie shirt and all the snow! I live in BC.

Have a great day,
Dawn & Memphis.

I just took some great new pictures that I will try and get on asap - need to figure out a quicker way to make the size smaller for submiting.
Hi Dawn!

Aha! So of COURSE you know all about how to house train a dog! That's wonderful...my fiance and I do a lot of volunteer work with our local branch of the SPCA and I am a huge advocate.

Yes I am Canadian as a matter of fact! We are now in Petawawa, ON, and the Newfie t-shirt is because Brad (fiance) is from there and his whole family still remains there.

So you are from BC? Anywhere near Marianne? I'm not sure exactly whereabouts in BC she is - I wonder if you're close.
hamish is four months old we have had him for 4 weeks he was not trained at all. Puppies have absolutely no idea about when to go, in there little heads is as an when. Hamish is now dry we had the same problem. He now goes to the back door when he needs to go. We did intense training we took him out every two hours day and night, after every playtime. after food and sleep. We were totally exhausted. If he went in the house Idid not make a big fuss, just said not here, took him outside told this is were you wee wee. He his now no bother and we have caught up with our sleep. Oes are really one of the best dogs to train they do not like mess were they live.
