Animal Behaviorist

We are having a problem Truman. For the last few months, he occasionally pees in his crate! I have heard that this is pretty unusual because dogs don't like to mess where they sleep. I've taken a urine sample to the vet and he's ok, no problems there. They said it may be behavioral..... sigh. I'm wondering if he gets anxious because we leave and that his urination is a symptom of his anxiety. However, he also does it during the night (and he has been able to "hold it" until morning for a long time, so it's not a problem of being in there too long). Also, sometimes he does it only a couple of hours after going outside. When he is outside his crate he is very good about coming to tell one of us when he wants to go outside. No problem there. Has anyone ever consulted an animal behaviorist? We're thinking of doing this. Thanks for your input!

How old is Truman? I would have the Vet do a sterile urine sample and make sure there's nothing going on. The best way of doing this is having them obtain the urine through a catheter in the vet office.

Have they ruled out all other medical causes??? (Is he neutered?)
Is the crate you keep your dog in ....BIGGER than it's supposed to be? Dogs are known to do that if they're ROOM to pee in their crate, as they're only supposed to have enough room to turn around in .....and that's it. If so, you could try closing up that area with extra towels in the back of the crate.

Also, dogs may do that if they feel they're being neglected (attn wise)?

Outside of that, when I worked at a vet clinic, ....that was usually a sign of bladder problems, but.... I'm GLAD to hear your vet says your baby is okay.
Truman is neutered and will be 2 in February. We tried putting him back in his smaller crate but he did it even then and he barely had enough room to stand up and/or turn around! It's not every day, but often enough that it's something I think we need to address. I did take a urine sample to the vet. My husband followed Truman around and caught some of it mid-stream. (Thank must have been a funny sight!)

Thank you for your replies and I'm open to any additional thoughts.

P.S. I have a call in to the vet to talk about this also.
Also, has something big and/or new happened in the house? A move, changed the location of food dish and bed?

I'd love to hear the update your vet gives you, and other suggestions from everyone here. :(

I had a beagle/daschund that did that and she ended up having bladder problems. thankfully the vet bill was free since it was when i worked there.
Well, yes - we did move in July. Actually, it started about then if I recall. Other than that, everything else the same.....
I would have assumed something medical, but since that was checked, I don't know.
I wonder when you moved if there was another dog that had an accident close to the crate. Could he be trying to mark over it?
I do wish you the best, and hope that you are able to get to the bottom of it soon. Please, keep us updated.

Good luck, Stormi and co.
I agree with Stormi... and as far as medical goes, maybe double check to make sure there are no kidney stones trying to make their way out etc...
Good luck! :) Persistence, patience and consistency are the key....
Urine samples obtained directly from the bladder are best (collected by cystocentesis) - urine samples that we obtain mid-stream aren't always accurately tested. I would also suggest that they send it off for a culture - not just do the typical urine test in the office. It could be behavioral - with the move - but it doesn't seem like that's the problem in my opinion. It would seem to me that he is having "control" issues - especially if it is in the crate and at night - he may be going in his sleep. There's also hormonal incontinence - but I am not aware that is a problem with males ???

Kristen - Thanks! I think I will ask the vet about another urine analysis tomorrow when he calls. Also will ask about the culture. I sure want to get to the bottom of this! I will feel terrible if it's something physical and he's had this problem for 4 months!
Well, I talked to the vet today and am taking Truman in Friday for a complete exam, another urinalysis and culture. He said we'll get all that out of the way before exploring any behavioral issues. I also got the name of an animal behaviorist who does one on one consultations. I hope it doesn't have to go that far but if it does, she's supposed to be good (she's the behaviorist for the Sedgwick County Zoo which is a really large zoo here in town). Wish me luck!
It will probably turn out to be something medical but nothing serious and easily treated! That's what I'd put my money on!

Please keep us posted! Good Luck!

Kristen
Wow... Sofa urinated from time to time when she moved to our fruever home, but stopped doing it once she got used to our house. Maybe your moving has to do somehow.

Hopefully it won't be medical and it will be trated easily. Good luck and keep us posted!
Whew! Truman's visit to the vet went well. He had a slight amount of bacteria in his urine. The vet prescribed some antibiotics and so far, so good. No peeing in the crate! We told him to go ahead with the urine culture and bloodwork, etc. in case it is something more than what was initially discovered. I hope that's all it is. All along he's been his usual bouncy goofy self (you all know what I mean!) I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this course of antibiotics will be the answer!
Great!!!!
This is good news! Mopsey uranated for no apparent reason in her sleep a few months ago. Doc prescribed medicine and it hasn't happened since! I will give you the name of the meds if you will need them! I hope you won't and all will be ok!
Hi, Marley -

Actually, I would like the name of the medicine prescribed for Mopsey. Truman is on his second round of antibiotics as the problem returned once he completed the first round. I will ask the vet about the meds if this round of antibiotics doesn't do the job! I think it must happens when he is asleep.....

Thanks!
Did they culture Truman's urine? They should have - so you know what antibiotic the infection is sensitive to.
Yes they cultured his urine. Nothing grew but the vet said that sometimes low grade bacterial infections don't always show up on a culture.....??!!
Yeah, Mop took antibiotics for this also, and it came back a week after the last pill. Then she took Propalin 50 mil. for 30 days twice a day. It has been months since her last incident (knock on wood LOL). Hope it helps.
Thanks! He's on for Clavmox 375 mg. 15 days so I sure hope that takes cae of the problem. So far, so good on this round!
