Aaaargh!

Ok, I'm new at the sheepie thing and let me tell you... First off, if I'm getting ready to walk out the door for errands, or whatever, Barkley grabs my purse, which is hanging of my arm, with her teeth, only because she wasn't invited and she loves to go in the car!! But the other day, she seemed irritated because she had to spend 15 minutes alone and when I opened the door, she bolted out, almost running me over. My front yard isn't fenced and I live on a busy street, so I panicked. She had me chase her for about 1-1/2 to 2 miles before finally stoping and slathering me with big sloppy kisses. Aaargh, I wanted to strangle her, but luckily for this dog, I am so out of shape, that by the time I finally caught my breath, all was forgiven. lol

That's so scary! Glad she's okay. That's one of the things I've tried to teach my dogs first off - that they can't exit the door without invitation!

Anytime they are to go out any door - I make them sit and wait - and only after I tell them to go should they go through the door. I don't always follow my own rules - because of laziness - but your mishap reminds me how important it is! It only takes a second for a tragedy!
Nikki,
Maybe Barkley (she was Mandy, right?) doesn't like to be alone. She did have a pretty ugly life up to your rescue, if I remember correctly. So now all she wants is to be with you. When she ran out the door, maybe she was just so beside herself with separation anxiety that she momentarily snapped. Keep working with her. You'll bez rewarded a hundred-fold.
Chris
I know that she hates being alone, luckily it rarely ever happens, but she came from the shelter with horrible kennel cough that isnt going away (despite 3 vet visits), so I can't take her everywhere. We have been working on this alot and she starts doggy classes on Thursday. Yiiipppeeeee!
haha this sounds all too familiar!

if youre afraid of her bolting again you can try what i do with walter:
when im leaving i act really really excited and grab one of his favorite treats, i then bring him into the next room and have him do sit, down, and stay. i then give him his treat and he eats it happily while i walk out the door. you can try a stuffed kong or a rawhide or just a small treat if those work. walter loves it so much that now when i get my keys he waits by the treat bucket and then runs to the kitchen and is in the down position before i can even give the command!
Yay! Glad you caught up to her- those are the most harrowing moments when you realize "oh no, the Sheepdog has escaped!"

I second Heather with the treat thing, we get Chelsea all excited to get her treats and then we can 'make a break for it' while she is chewing them or playing with her kong. She also has a problem with my purse, even if I ma just moving it from table to floor and not going anywhere she comes running and gives me a few barks as if to say "don't even think about it!"

I have another piece of advice, since day one we have trained Chelsea that the front door is NOT HER DOOR. We don't allow her out that way, we don't come in from the walk that way, everything through the back door (s). Interestingly enough she is about 13 months now and she does not use the front door, to my horror I have found it open with the screen door not completely closed and she is just sitting there looking out, luckily no squirrels or kids ran by, I don't think she would be able to handle the temptation. When we return from walks she immediately heads around back, she won't go up the steps to the front door, it just doesn't cross her mind. This is by no means 100% fool proof, but I think it's interesting that the door is of minor importance to her and that she hasn't yet figured it out as an escape route. She just ignores it.

Good LUCK!
Up.
