I got a Broadcast Digital TV (DTV) Converter Box WOW!

So I've been patiently waiting to do something about my TV snow situation.

I read the info found at the www.dtv2009.com website and applied for my coupons back in mid January.

Last night I went back to the site to find the "CEBs" (Coupon Eligible Boxes) are still not listed as available, but I went to BestBuy.com and found one of the models listed for $55 or $60 or some such. I was also looking to see if there was a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) cheap that has a digital tuner, but didn't see anything I liked.

So tonight Joan and I went to the store and bought the device (and an amplified antenna, more on that later) even though we don't have the coupon from the government yet. I figure if it doesn't work I am returning it anyway and that would waste the coupon since they are non-replaceable once used.

The results are amazing! I now have about 16 channels all crystal clear, just using the antenna I borrowed from my brother, and this is downstairs where my reception is poorest! Without moving the antenna around almost all the channels do well .

My next project will be to place the antenna in my old upstairs office closet where there is a cable to the basement, go into the basement and put that cable as the input into the splitter and see if I can run both TVs from the cable wiring that is already in the house!

So there you have it -- not $50 a month, but a $55 one-time investment and I get sufficient TV for my purposes. Still no Myth Busters though. :(

The antenna I bought supposedly gives 30dB gain, I find that extreeeemly difficult to believe, but after I've done my office closet experiment, I may just see if it boosts the signal (the converter box has a signal strength meter on it.)

Woo hoo! I truly thoguht I had 0 chance of getting many stations. I'm thrilled!

So now I just wait to get my coupons so my other TV and my motorhome can have DTV.

Ron

PS Boy, has David Letterman aged or what? Here I was thinking it was just the snow. ;)

Congratulations Ron, you're definitely good with finance. I'm still marveling and in shock that a guy can actually leave an electronics store having spent less than $60.00.

uhhmm, can you have a chat with my hubby??????? :plead:

SIXTEEN CHANNELS? 8O How can you function with ONLY sixteen channels in this day and age? :P
Does this mean we will never hear from you again, you'll be glued to your 16 channels???
What 16 channels are available over the airwaves? :?
at least he can find something to watch

i have hundreds of channel with direct tv (hubby need the top package) and i still can't find anything to watch most of the time

Well, Here's what I said:
"My next project will be to place the antenna in my old upstairs office closet where there is a cable to the basement, go into the basement and put that cable as the input into the splitter and see if I can run both TVs from the cable tv wiring that is already in the house!"

As I mentioned, I bought an amplified antenna and that worked OK, just about the same as my brother's, except I did have to move it around more often than I originally thought. I hooked up the amplified antenna that I bought and the results were similar. Then I tried hooking up my borrowed antenna upstairs but that didn't work at all, not enough amplification to make it through the splitters, but the amplified antenna I bought did work. The problem would be in moving the antenna to get different stations.

At RadioShack I found a set-top amplified antenna for $50 that has a remote! No kidding! So I put that in the upstairs office closet, connected it up to the cable that goes to the splitter in the basement, connected the TV to the cable outlets in my den and in my bedroom.... and voila!

I now have 1 TV in the den getting digital TV, and my TV in my bedroom getting the old analog signals. But I only have one remote for the antenna.... :( (I bet I could buy another one if I wanted to!)

Now when those coupons come in... I can have digital in my bedroom too (not that I watch it much... maybe once a month if that).

This concludes the DTV saga, for now.
I'm really confused by this whole thing. We have cable. But only one tv has a digital box. The other 2 tv's get (low numbered, up to 99) cable channels.

Will we need a new digital box for those, or will the signal come through the cable hookup?
i love tv!! wish i had one.

You only need a digital box if you want to receive "over the air" signal with an antenna. Your TV's receive signal via cable hookup. You are good to go.
:clappurple:
Thanks Ron! I live in a cave I suppose and didnt know about the coupon offer. Just signed up!
