Shingles Update

Hi everybody! It has been a while since I gave a shingles update. I am still dealing with the nerve damage, but am coming along. About two weeks ago the feeling came back in my gums, which is great, Still numb in my jaw/chin/tongue/eye drainage/ear infections off and on. I am still on pain meds but all in all MUCH better then I was months ago when I couldn't eat nor talk. April it will be a year.

I've enclosed a pic of me(blonde hair, coral top) with my niece on my Birthday three days before Christmas 2007. I will admit I had to take a few extra pain pills to have a smile that day. A few days before I had a HUGE relapse and was in so much pain, but was determined to see my family for Christmas, and have a good time, which we did.
So here we are at my niece's celebrating Christmas/Birthday.

The upside to this disease is I have lost a lot of weight. The picture here is from March 2007 about a month before my illness

So the weightloss is the silver lining. :D

No, I think I'll pass, thank you. You look awsome! Drop a few pounds and you are suddenly blond........I remember that happening to me too!

Glad you are making progress. Shingles are truly awful, you got a triple dose of awful.
I'm so glad to hear that you're finally starting to feel better. :P You've had the worse case of shingles I've ever heard of in my life. 8O Bless your heart, you've really been through the ringer this year. :ghug:

On the upside, you look terrific! I can't beleive how much weight you've lost, and as Dawn said, with the tan and the new hair color, you look like a new person. If we can just get you feeling as good as you look, you'll be in business. 8)
I was just wondering how you were feeling the other day, because a friend of my MIL just came down with shingles and it made me think of you. Almost a year???? 8O And to have lost so much feeling in so many places??? Just unimaginable!

I'm so glad to hear that you're finally starting to feel pretty much better, though!  And you look TERRIFIC!
Glad you are feeling better! Did anyone else notice that along with the tan she is wearing a short sleeve shirt at Christmas? One of the joys of living in south Florida.
Helen...you look great!!!! so tanned !!! Glad you're feeling better!!!
I'm glad you are feeling better and better every day and 'Lady, you look stunning!' :D
I'm glad you are starting to feel better Helen....you look amazing!
You look WONDERFUL!!!! I hope you continue to improve - with NO set backs!!! I love the coral top-- so bright and cheerful. Just lovely! :)
:) I am glad to hear you are feeling better. But as a diet I will have to give it a pass. For what you have and are going though there should be something good. Maybe you will also win money and have perfect weather this summer. :)
Helen, You look fabulous!!! I am so happy to hear you are finally getting better.

I think you need to tell everyone about your other secret with the weight loss. The Green Tea!! Or are we keeping that a secret? (Says the Green Tea pusher)
Va Va Vooom! You looked amazing in that first photo! I would have never guessed you weren't feeling well. Okay is it awful of me to smile when I read the post regarding the shingles diet. Laughter is the best medicine!

On a more serious note - you've gone through a lot and I do hope you're feeling 100% again. You've still able to smile that gorgeous smile of yours which is evident in both photos.

Thank you everyone for the compliments! You guys are really the ones who helped me pull through this. In the beginnging Old English, Pepsi's Mommy, Wendy1976 and Lindy kept me going, even when I couldn't get out of bed...my hubby would read their messages to me. As I started to get better, I would come on the forum and laughed/cried with all of you through your daily postings. This is truely a great gathering of wonderful people and you will never know what you have done for me in the past 9 months. For MANY months I couldn't even go outside because even the lightest breeze hurt my skin. Anyway, I am grateful for your friendship, kindness and prayers!

The hair color change is funny...I had been a blonde since a teen. So I decided about two years ago to go back to my natural hair color to see how much grey I had. I was amazed, hardly any. So when I was feeling better, decided to go back to blonde. lol

Chris: I am so sorry to hear about your MIL's friend...she is in for an awful ride. Where are her shingles located? I'll pray for her, and cross my fingers that it will be a mild case.

Elissa: The Green Tea Diet is no secret...it works. Of course I combined it with the shingles diet and the Two Dog Diet. I have a banana for breakfast, Orange for snack after the dogs and I come back from our one/two mile walk. Another piece of fruit for lunch. (I share all this fruit with China. Violet is not crazy about the fruit) A piece of meat, spoonful of vegtables, a spoonful of mashed potatoes or 1/2 baked potato for dinner, which I share with Violet and China. I do drink ALOT of coffee all day too. I switch to Green Tea in the afternoon. :). I wash my floors everyday, which most of the f;oors in my house are tile. I also keep the outside of the house up, with raking and such..so I do get a lot of exercise. I just started riding my bicycle again too. :)

Thank you again everyone!!!! Your are GREEEAAATTT!
Well I guess if you gotta feel lousey you might as well LOOK GREAT!!!!

I hope things continue to improve.

didntcha know thats the secret

Helen, you look AMAZING!! I am soo proud of you....and in a stupid freaky way, jealous that the shingles diet works so much better than the chemo diet
Do you eat that little on purpose? That doesn't seem like something you could or should keep up for the long term...
Hi, I glad your doing better, when ever I hear of someone having shingles I also think of you and the pain you must feel. I'm so happy your feeling better and I think you look great.
Sorry to hear that you are still suffering, but I hope that you are out of the woods now.

You do look great!!

The problem is I really don't have an appetite, so I know taking meds you need to eat to get the whole benefit from them. I schedule my eating so I don't forget to eat. I am sure eventually my appetite will return. Thank you for your good wishes. :D
Welcome to the world of Blondes!!!

You look great as a blonde!
:D Glad you are feeling better! Shingles is the pitts! I found out by accident that Arnica (tablets) seem to help shingles pain and recurrence. You look wonderful! :go:
Wow, Helen you make a stunning blonde and you look fantastic!

I'm saddened to hear you are still having major problems with the shingles. I have a dear friend who suffers from it and says it's absolutely excruciating (sp?). Hers is confined to a small reoccurring area.

I will continue to pray that you find a complete remission and relief of the torture you have endured. You are pretty inspiring!
my daughter just got diagn. with shingles, started on her hip and around
she has started the meds, and the pain, i am afraid of what to expect
did anybody else get these in your family, helen?
I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope she goes through this and heals quickly.

No, no one else in my family came down with the shingles. I was at my nieces house for Easter the day before I came down with the Shingles...she has 6 sons and at first I thought I had pick something up from them...none of them came down with Chicken Pox or Shingles. Shingles is caused from the Chicken Pox Virus and usually comes on because of stress. I have never had Chicken Pox so not always true.
It will be two years in mid April since I came down with the Shingles and I am still dealing with the nerve damage on my face. The right side of my tongue, chin, cheek, lip, some gum are still numb My right eye tears alot also. My dr doesn't know if the nerve will ever come back. I took myself off the pain meds in September and deal with the pain on my own when it flairs up. I can be fine one minute and in total pain the next....there is no rymn or reason to the pain. Stress really brings on the pain, but I deal with it.

I hope better for your daughter...Shingles are the most painful thing to ever go through. Please let me know how she is. I have heard of people who have the shingles like she does that it goes it's course and they get better quickly...I cross my fingers that this will be your daughter's case.

Please tell your daughter that I'm pulling for her!
thanks for the insight, my daughter is 12 yrs. she had the chicken pox really bad when she was 8 weeks old!!
they have started pain treatment, the rash is still spreading down her left side. some of the blisters are starting to break open.
we started the medication and we are using both motrin and tylenol 3, prescribed for the pain..
we are on spring break, bad way to spend it.

i wonder if she will feel like going to school or it they will even let her???

One thing I meant to tell you was twice a day have her put some Aquafor on the rash and then take a warm wash cloth and wipe...this will reduce any scaring. My good husband did this for me each morning and night. He would put the Aquafor on in the morning so then by night the skin was soft. I don't have any scars on my face, thanks to him. I had broken out over the right side of my face into my ear and ear canal, my tongue and down my throat as well. I had Percoset for pain meds. I feel so bad for your daughter. I hope she recovers quickly.

Your daughter's skin may become really sensitive to clothes, or even air hitting it. Even now my face hurts when there is a breeze, so I cover my cheek. I hope she by passes that step. Tell her to hang in there, most do go away.
