MDR1 - multidrug sensitivies revisted

Update: as more people are starting to test for MDR1, we're beginning to get a better picture of how widespread the risk is. We already knew we were seeing it in the BYB/puppymill population. Additionally, I know of one European dog (showlines) who just came back mutant/normal and one American bitch (showlines) who just came back mutant/mutant, so the risk probably spans the OES population, even though we still don't know the frequency.

For more info on the issue, see: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/

If you're on the fence about this, consider testing before Sept 08 as the price will be going up from $60 to $100. SE Wisconsin is trying to organize a clinic at our specialty in late July and it might be something to consider offering at rescue picnics or other OES gatherings. You get a discount for sending in mass DNA samples.

They're easy to collect, it's a simple cheek swab, so you don't even need a vet - you can do it yourself. It's not the greatest threat to our breed by any means, but something we have a test for and therefore can control. For the indiviual dog owner, it's nice to know your dog's status so you can warn you vet if there's any cause for concern.

I actually just ordered the test for my 2 pups this past week. Something as simple as Revolution, the anti-flea and parasite topical solution can be dangerous to your OES if your test comes back positive. My last Vet had never heard ofr the MDR-1, but my new one was very familiar with the information, and encouraged me to get both girls checked out.

One of my two puppies (from two different litters) has been sick on and off since we got her. I've been watching her meds to make sure that none of the suspect drugs were in them, but never checker her Revolution, being so used to just squeezing it onto my cats. My new vet informed me that it has a chemical that is a derivative of ivermectin, and could be whats been making Luna sick.

I LOVE my new vet for having caught this~!
Hello!

While searching for informations about MDR1 I found this forum.
It´s good to see that this dangerous gene defect is known by more and more people!
Perhaps you know about our database for tested dogs (English version: http://www.mdr1-defekt.de/index.php?lang=EN)?
We also show tested OES, because due to a German study more than 14% of them a carriers of the mutant gene ( http://www.vetmed.uni-giessen.de/pharmt ... assen.html )

We just are a little group of women with own sad experiences with this mutation. That gave us the idea for this project.
We created this homepage to inform about MDR1 and to show tested dogs and litters, where no affected puppies will be. Breeders can use our homepage to get in contact. We just hope to help that this serious mutation will be known by all and that breeders start to breed it out. But as we know very well that this calls for all their knowledge and skill we created this homepage and database to help them to find the right breeding partners.
Our service is free. We hope also to encourage others to test their dogs, too.

We started nearly two years ago - never thinking about becoming an international project. But this we are now. We not only show dogs from Germany but also from the Netherlands, Russia or Austria.
Well. up to now we have only a few Bobtails only.
But we would gladly show more! :)

So - don´t you like to join us? And if you like, you can tell others about our project and invite them to take part.

To send us the informations about your tested dogs you can use our online formular ( http://www.mdr1-defekt.de/melden.php?lang=EN ).

Kind regards,
Kris Klemme, Germany

Welcome Kris!

I am glad you found our website. I hope people will find your site to be helpful, too.
I got my response; both my girls are normal/normal. So I guess they just have the most easily upset stomachs EVER.
I just mailed our test in this past week. They stated it would take 2 weeks to get it back.
We will keep you posted to the results.
