Resting with front paw tucked under???

Any ideas as to why my Coop rests with one of his front paws tucked under???

Image

His Uncle Rufie has done the same for years.
We think it helps him spring into action when he wants to get up quickly?

Just wondering................

Sorry...don' know...but he sure is a CUTIE!!!!!!!
THat's how Tucker usually lays as well! Don't know why though, but I've seen many dogs do it.
Chewie does that also. In fact he often lays with both front feet tucked under him. Or, sometimes he "hides" them under the the throw rug at the entrance to the living room, off the porch.
Super cute!
I thought all Sheepies did that.

Image
I found one of Chewie doing one leg. I will have to keep my camera handy and catch the double paw tuck. :D

This was his 1st therapy dog visit at 1 yr old.

Chauncey lays with one or both paws tucked under him. When he gets something he's not suppose to have ( usually a dish cloth ) he runs to his bed with it. So if we see him hauling butt to the bed we need to check it out. When he sees us he will innocently  and cleverly tuck the evidience under his chest with his paws. What a sneek![/i]
A usual position for both Pepsi and Rags.
Here is Pepsi with paw tucked:

Rufus also lays with 1 paw or both tucked in sometimes it looks like he has his arms crossed!
Wow!!!!!! This is great! I love all the responses. :D :D :D :D
The first time I saw the paw thing was with Coop's uncle Rufie, then when I got Coop, he did it too! My last OES, Simon didn't do it.

I would like to see the 2 paw trick, that's cute. 8) 8) 8)

Cooper also likes to grab any hand towel that he can get his mouth on and then he tears around the house with it.

When he has something else in his mouth that he shouldn't have and I make notice of it, he closes his mouth and acts all cool like "I don't have anything in my mouth". If I don't pursue it he then starts chewing, then I have to open his mouth and fetch whatever he has in there, usually a piece of one of my plants, leaf or maybe a rock from outside.

Thanks again for all your input on what I thought was just my dog's interesting behaviors.

His mom does this so I can't slicker her front legs, I think. Is he worse on the grooming table? Belle can tuck all extremities under her in case of a slicker "attack"

KB
He fusses somewhat while on the table as I slicker his feet. I manage to work it out with him. I stroke the brush more gently so I can get the job done and he usually goes along.
The rest of his body is no trouble at all to groom, he is a pleasure to groom compared to my first, Simon.
I credit the woman I got him from for all good tips on what I should do to make things work better for us and Coop. She said to get a grooming table and start asap and that was perfect advice. My first used to get groomed on the floor, that was torture on my back.

LOL!!!!
YES, he does this everytime on the table. Those footies go into hiding when the brush gets close to them. Slicker, comb, pin brush - doesn't matter the weapon.

He is so good for grooming - it is like his token protest.
Uh-huh! Rufus also tries to keep his mouth closed if he has something in it- He's like a boy chewing gum in class
I think the legs & feet are very sensitive, Ru doesn't like having his brushed either.
Winston always sleeps with one leg turned under:

Their front paws are extremely sensitive because it is a very important "equipment" for them. They use them for a lot of things such as digging, holding down prey/toys, pawing, etc.
:D Willoughby does the same thing. He also closes his mouth when hre's stolen a cat toy and keeps his head down hoping I won't find out! 8)
Bailey always does the paw-tuck too. Here he is with an un-tucked Panda:

Image
That's how Yuki sleeps and it always looks uncomfortable ...like they're not meant to lay that way.
I'm a little creeped out by calling this action "tucking". Didn't anyone else see Silence of the Lambs?
Silence of the Lambs was a long time ago...........refresh my memory, why does the term "tucking" freak you out?
Would "folding under" sound better?
Folding under would be better! The scene that tucking reminds me of is when the bad guy is dancing with the "wig" on and he backs up from the camera and is only wearing a robe but he looks like a girl. That would be the "tuck".

Here's Willoughby resting: this should have been with my earlier post!
here is panda with the tuck, er fold under

Image
 Yea, I researched online and figured it out,,, so I see where the word tucked got to you.
I'm impressed with how many others like to "fold under" the paw/paws. The pictures are great.
Poppy does it too!

Image
Gus Gus often does the one-legged fold-under, when he was a tiny little baby he used to sleep with his front feet folded out, like flippers. We called him "Shamu" for a while! He often curls up in a little ball too, does anyone remember "Poppels"? They were little stuffed animals that tucked into a ball... he often looks completely round with a big head. Who couldn't love this breed? I think it's amazing how Sheepies have some funny quirks that seem to run in the breed, like folding feet up, sucking on toys, and drinking too much water. Love it!

Our other sheepie sleeps with one paw tucked in and so does Summer. Summer has started stealing tea towels in the kitchen. It is making me mad as once she has had it I have to throw it in the wash.....I try to ignore her but it is hard.
that is the only way derby layes even as a pup

:) :) I love it! So many nice pictures showing our sheepies and others resting, in their own styles. Great.
I noticed this too with my OES. He does the one paw tuck. I went back to all his puppy pictures and low and behold he has favored the same paw since 8 weeks old. It's a ritual now. It reminds me very much of how babies will fold over their hand and tuck it by their cheek to sleep. Their hands are so flexible that they literally fold on themselves like a paw tuck.

I think it's a comforting thing for them or perhaps a habit they picked up in the womb when they were most likely scrunched in with others and had to find a comfortable position.

Or maybe it's like how peope fold their legs when sitting. It boosts them a tiny bit to take pressure off other areas.

Marley loves ot be groomed - except for her legs. she can become the legless sheepdog in secodns when she knows that is where I am headed next :P
blue eyes are hypnotising........
8) 8) I could get lost in those blue eyes,,,,,,,,
darcey you are so right they do look like a like
I am a little behind on this post but....
I have always understood that OES "tuck" to blend in with the sheep they are protecting...
Sheep tuck their feet.....
The OES needs to blend so when Wylie Cyote comes in the pasture a sheepie blends in and can chase them off and do their job!
Also the same reason they do the "poopy walk"
Sheep do not stop to poop and I think alot of OES have that same trait (whole other topic)
This is just my understanding and thoughts....any input???
Could be totally wrong but......thinking
our basset hound did this and after taking him to the vet she said it was a sign he was in pain ant that was the most comfortable position , after he was examined we found out his shoulder was partly out of socket , after she put it in and he took med for inflammation , he stopped turning it under , I was glad I didn't just let it go . he is a happy dog now with no pain

Glad you got it fixed but bassets are not sheepdogs. This is a breed wide trait. It's something they do from the time they are born.

Lily at 8 weeks tucking her paws.

3 yrs old at xmas this last yr, still doing it.

Actually I just noticed both pics were probably taken exactly 3 yrs and a week (give or take a day or two) apart. Both before xmas but soon enough for xmas tree and the seasonal decorate the sheepie....
