OES and maggots?

I found someone on another board I go to that has an OES, so I told her to come to this site. She will probably answer me, but can anyone further explain what she may be referring to?

Why would a dog get this?

We've had a few over the years and they have all been very playful and have such a great sense of humor. The only problem with them is that they have their tales clipped off when they are young, which causes a few problems when they get older like (gross, and tmi) maggots (sp?) Kelly hasn't had any, but one of our others did.

...or is it possible she is referring to tapeworms and associated it to the breed? Just trying to figure it out myself.
Sounds like her dogs have had tapeworms..... or, as gross as this sounds, and I truly hope it is not the case, but if an oes bum got dingleberried with poo and not cleaned I suppose flies would lay eggs in it?
yeah, that sounds very logical.

esp. the dingleberries factor.

i bet that's what happened. i was like maggots? what in the world.
I hope that's not the case though, it should never be left uncleaned....
Yeah, me too ...but I'm sure I don't have the whole story. I just have what was written above. :)

Plus a few sentences I cropped out that just said she loved the breed. I think they're at her parent's house but I can't tell. I hope she checks out the link I gave her (to here).
hello! this is Sara... i'm going to send this to see if this is working right first haha
Welcome to the board :D
okay, I called my mom to ask her why one of our OES had maggots and she informed me that it was on another OES and not ours. I was a youngin' when we got our first OES, and all this time I thought that ours was the one that had it and thought it was the grossest thing! Turns out it was due to flies laying eggs (?) in the poop on its rear. How awful!! Does that explain it for you? Sorry for the confusion... I should have asked my mom before I said anything... :o)
I hope you're not mad I asked. I was just very curious since as I wrote ......am looking to be owned by one soon. *cheese*
Willowsprite is right and this why they recomened shaving the rear end of an OES. The pooh gets caught in the hair inviting flies to lay their eggs then maggots. Most groomers know how to do this and if they do not I would not go to them as this is a basic grooming procedure for OES. I always check to see if Drakes rear is clean. I know one person who had their OES puppie get stopped up because of a dry pooh blockage. This is something I read about while researching the OES breed 8)
NO, not at all!! I totally understand... and I found out that it wasn't our dog that had it LOL man, so many years I thought that... oh well. But she did say something about how she thought that it had something to do with the tail being clipped off... know anything about that? she being my mom.
Oh, and did you notice on the other board I put tales instead of tails? LOL
lol, when I quoted you I noticed. ;) That's okay! As I age, I tend to make silly errors too.

It's like I get more careless with age. There's no way I would have made the errors I am now 5 yrs ago.
Are there stitches and such after the procedure? If so, maybe something combined with an infection and poop getting in the area and them not noticing ....caused the maggots? (shrugs) - just a wild guess
LOL
Well good luck with your OES search! They are WONDERFUL pets! I really love mine! He's so child-like... such fun!! I wish I could be of more help to you, but we got one of ours from a lady who was moving and didn't want to take her OES with her, how sad :( and we got Kelly from a family friend. The first one we got, was from the lady with the maggots unfortunately... so I don't recommend her
Joaheyo, the tails are docked usually at only 2 or 3 days after birth, so by the time one brings the puppy home there should be no sign what so ever of the procedure, I doubt that had anything to do with it.
Also, just on another note, if a dog is fed well and healthy there shouldn't be any diarreah, or even loose stools. My girls never have poop stuck to their bums, their stools are firm and don't stick. Dancer did have poop stuck to her bum a couple times as a puppy, but that was because if she was in the middle of having an accident in the house and someone saw her in the act, she would act all surprised and sit right down as if to stop it. LOL That's when it got all stuck. I immediately would take her into the bathroom and give her bottom end a bath and comb it out. LOL
I just had to say something didn't I???
(as I toddle off to clean up a gift)
Maggots are caused by dogs that are not well groomed and outside alot! We had a dog in our town (OES) that had to have his anus repaired TWICE because maggots had eaten it! (I know - I'm completely grossing you out!) It can also happen with a hot spot that has been chewed raw and unclean and/or any open sore - in the hot weather the flies land on these areas and lay eggs - which become maggots!
:D Willow, haven't you learned by now! Sigh, my kitty girls do the same thing "Oh, my girls are great! They're never naughty, they don't scratch on the furniture!" Next second, Iris decides to sharpen her claws on the window sill... That's what we get

Tee hee! Henry gets a poopy butt every time he gets excited and like all good OES he get excited OFTEN! He does seem to be growing out of weekly diarrhea now finally at 3-1/2. Now I've jinxed myself --I suppose this means I'll have an awful mess to clean up today.
When Oreo does a poop he squats like a tripod and walks as he poops. This can be a problem as one time he was almost standing up and a poop came out and was hanging on a hair I gave it a push and it came off. He has excellent stools well formed and not many due to eating Solid Gold. My first sheepie pooped in one spot and we had few dingle berries. We check his butt often he drops dingle berries which is good but a clean butt keeps him healthy and comfortable. I cleaned many poop butts in the past so I know the experience.
Henry's mom, have you considered switching foods? It sounds to me like he may just need something different.
I think it depends on the dog! I had an OES who had diarrhea when he got nervous - nothing to do with his food! (He had it in my sister's brand new car on the way home from the groomers one day! )

Kristen,

I think Jack is the same way, when we first get to dog park he will empty his bowels for a very long time before he can play. He is also like that when we go to dog activities that are outside, but if they are inside he is fine. He loves meet and greets with everyone though and greets everyone with a wiggling bum! :P
Luckily, we have only had them sick in the car once, but it was both of them. They decided to tag team the trashcan the night before we went out of town. 8O
Stormi and co.
Hi Henry's Mom, Well I spoke to soon Oreo had a little poop on him last night. This does happen now and again for no reason. He now smells nice I used cucumber soap.
