Help me choose an MP3 player

I don't have one (other than the one in my cellphone which I've had only mild success using) and really don't know much about them. So, I thought I'd enlist the help of my dear friends and techno geeks on the forum. :D

I want one that only plays music and possibly stores photos. The video features and all the other album photo art, synching, etc. won't be used, so there's no need for all the bells & whistles.

I looked at the IPOD shuffle, but the reviews say they're not very durable. :? It needs to be pretty hardy as Robbie will be using it at work and it will probably get banged around a bit.

Thanks, ever so much, for your kind assistance.

I swear by the Ipod Nano and the plain Ipod. Photos, music and video. Love ours....
Define "plain IPOD" - which one is that? There are so many versions, I get them confused. :?
There's only a couple of versions-- some just come with more hard drive space than others. I'd at least get a iPod Nano (rather than a shuffle) just so you can see song titles, because the shuffle has no screen.

How many songs are you looking to store? Do you plan to put a few photos on or a huge photo library? Do you plan to exercise with it or will it just be sitting next to you (in other words, does it have to be light?). Those are all things I would think about when choosing one.

You're going to get album art and all that stuff just because of the nature of the iPod so it's not exactly a bell and whistle, just a by product of having the color screen available, lol. It all goes in smoothly from iTunes so it's not like you use it, per say, it just plays along.

My advice: don't get an iPod Touch. They're way too expensive for what you get and not worth it yet, at least until they can offer more hard drive space.
At my daughters request I got her a ZUNE for Christmas, I know NOTHING about them but she swears it's DA BOMB! It has tons of memory and is "user" friendly (so SHE says).
I love my little Creative Zen V Plus. I got the 4GB size, and I have over 1300 songs on it, a couple of pictures, and still some room. Its got really good battery life, too. I think you can find them for less than a hundred dollars, at least mine was about $95. Its very small and portable, too. fits in my pocket easily. It won't skip like the hard drive players (full size zune, ipod, etc.)if jostled too hard or dropped. I did drop it the other day and it still works fine :D . My husband however loves his zune. He doesn't have the new model that just came out, and he does occasionally get mad at it, but he loves it. Lots more storage on his, its a 30GB, and he has over 12000 songs, and still about half of it empty. My friend loves her ipod nano, but I don't like itunes, so I didn't go with an ipod. Good luck in your decision!
What will you be using the MP3 player for? I run with mine, so I prefer the IPOD Shuffle, it is so much smaller, and I think is easier to use than the Nano. I hated having to actually look at my screen when I wanted to change songs and the shuffle clips right onto my shorts, instead of having to wear an arm band.
I gave my husband and the kids gave me iPod nanos with 8 GB space for Christmas, and we just LOVE them! I'll never fill it with enough songs in 12 lifetimes, so the size is perfect. The kids have the full size iPods and have videos on them. My son loves the show "The Office" and has bought the first season to watch on his iPod.

Just can't figure it out - people scramble to buy bigger and bigger TVs, then buy shows to watch on a 2" iPod!!
I know nothing about the ipods but I got Don an Ipod shuffle to use in hospital cause it was the least complicated to work and it holds 240 songs (I think) and I was even able to load it with some songs
I have a shuffle and I take it to the gym with me 5 days a week. I have had it over a year and it still works fine.
I have the first commercial MP3 tht was made. It's the size of a brick and weighs enough to give you a droop in elastic waisted pants if you use the belt clip but it is awesome!!
It's made by Creative and actually has an EQ in it. It's also super user friendly and I still like it better than my stupid Ipod. :x
Creative stuff is even available at places like Circuit City.

Lol. I have that one, too. I love that I have to use 2 hands to use it.
I think it looks like the old handheld video games. I always wonder if people look at me while I'm djing and think, "Must be nice to be playing Tetris at work"!
Yeah, I always thought that Pong or electronic football should've been on it, too.
In 1987 or 1988 I had a Panasonic portable CD player!

It had a shoulder strap to hold the battery case that held the CD player. I carried the whole thing with a collection of CDs in a briefcase back and forth from work every day (minus the battery holder, it was too heavy)!
Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. I'm mostly looking for something lightweight and relatively durable with about 4GB of memory for music & photos. As far as compatiblity, if you don't purchase an Apple product, how do you download the songs? Do you still use ITunes, or is there another software that you use? :?
You have to use stupid ITunes to work the Ipod.
The Creatives have gotten a lot smaller and lighter now!
Thanks for the tips. I'll see what I can find on Creatives.
Though I don't like iTunes as much on a PC as on a Mac, it still beats the heck out of using RealPlayer or Windows Media Player! The fact that couldn't use ITunes is what would keep me from getting a non-Apple product that wasn't compatible with it.
I used the old iPod mini until it was stolen

I'm thinking of getting the iPod nano. I want it in green. 8)
Remember a few months ago when I couldn't load the songs on the MP3 player in my cell phone. I paid for the songs through Amazon and downloaded it direclty into ITunes but I could not, for the life of me, get it onto my phone (which came with the ITunes software). It makes me nervous to buy an IPOD and then never be able to add songs.

Is this an irrational fear?

Yes, it is. :) You'll have no problem with iTunes and an iPod. I promise!

Whenever anyone mentions the iPod mini, I think of the Borat movie where he's talking about his neighbor and his iPod mini. "Everyone knows iPod mini is for girls!"

I have a green Nano. It is pretty sweet. I also have a 3rd generation iPod which, in comparison to the new iPods, is gigantic. It's really heavy and-- get this-- the screen isn't even in color.
All righty then, if you're sure my technologically challenged self can do it, then I'll go for it and get the Nano. :D
BOOOOOOO!!!!!
Yucky Apple products!!
