A Very Scary Moment

The other night aprox 10pm I opened the back door for the boys to have their final bathroom break as is usual at that time. Normally they race out and are back within a few mins. I leave the backdoor open and sit on the couch and wait. It's very cold outside so I slip a fuzzy blanket around my shoulders and wait as they seemed to be taking an extra long time that evening.

I"m not sure if I dozed off as I'm am suddenly aware of Merlin racing around and then he races out again. He did this a few times. This is unusual as they normally all follow Merlin and I hear a parculiar bark but can't place if it's coming from Panda or Blue. It was a bark I hadn't heard before.

I gaze out the window but can't see anything due to the darkness and so gather up boots and coat to have a closer look.

OMG! Panda is in the fish pond!! The temperature is frigid and he's broken through the ice and can't seem to pull himself out!
I race back in for treats and leash but no amount of pulling seems to work. Panda appears stuck and appears dazed. Blue, who was barking that strange sounding bark, is standing near the pond as is Merlin now.

Panda has bad hips and although the pond is not very deep I think he's getting a bit hypothermic. He starts sliding down and I jump in and lift him out. He seems light as a feather and I think it's a combination of adrenaline and having a very cold butt! It brings back memories of when my previous girl Shaggy had done the very same thing many years ago one night. I installed motion detectors because of it.

I'm not sure how Panda ended up in the pond as it's surrounded by boulders which I had pushed away to get him out. The boys and I race into the house where I gather blankets and towels and don't care one bit my floors are a sopping mess. My boy is okay!! After thawing out myself - I give all my boys hugs!
Very proud of Merlin and grumpy Blue for their part!

Way to go Marianne!!! Merlin and Blue deserve extra treats. Give Panda an extra hug from all of us. :ghug:

OMG! How scary! Glad everyone is okay now!
I am glad Panda is alright. How scary for you, especially to happen at night.
Maybe he was surfing oes.org and wanted to winter swim like Chewie??
YIPES!!! Glad all worked out well.
so happy to hear tha Panda is ok and you also :D My big boy Dudley fell into the pool one time and where I got the strength I don't know but I reach in grabed his coat with both hands and lifted him straight up and over to the edge. and believe me an over 100 lb sheepie with a soaking coat was heavy :D
Jeepers Creepes Marianne.. that is scary...

I am glad Panda is okay.. and what a good boy Merlin was to tell you.
Wow, you are so lucky. Our neighbor just lost their golden to the local lake. Merlin and Blue are perfect first responders.
Wow, Marianne! 8O I'm so glad to know that both Panda AND you are okay! :ghug: Big hugs to Merlin and Blue for alerting you to the problem. Do you have any idea how long he was in the pond?
OMG how scary!! 8O
Thank goodness for Blue and Merlin, what good brother!!! :clappurple: :cheer:
How scary, thank goodness you are both Ok. They seem to know when another animal is in trouble. My yorkie is a pain in the bum, but a couple of years ago she was barking frantically in the garden. Kept coming in to the kitchen and racing back out. When I went out the tortoise had turned over.
OH thank gosh! I was tearing up as I read that and immediately went and gave Tucker a huge squeeze! What an awful scare - I am so, so glad everyone is ok.
It's amazing to me the way that not only do animals know what is normal and what is not (i.e. Panda in the pond is not normal in that circumstance, but had he been swimming around in hot weather I'm sure the others would not have been alarmed), but that they find ways to communicate to us that things are not right. Simply amazing!
So glad the everything turnd out ok.

Merlin deserves an award. What a smart guy.
Thanks for the comments everyone.

I think I realize now what happened. That morning I had thrown some bread out for the birds from my back porch. It had snowed lightly, probably covering the ice on the pond. Some of the bread may have landed on the pond. I'm almost sure that it was probably a tasty tidbit..(in Panda's eyes at least) that made him walk on it.

He may have been in there as long as 15 mins - I feel so awful about that.

Have to remind my boy that while he's special - he cannot walk on water!

Jean, I think it must have been the adrenaline and moms love that gave us super human strength when we needed it!

The people in my city are a bit zany and so I fit right in!

I'm glad for you and Panda that everything worked out ok and no bad ending!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :)

Years ago one of my older dogs did just that and fell through the thin ice on our small fish pond. I was out with him and saw it happen so I was able to pull him out by his collar. He was a smaller dog than what our sheepies are but anyway like you, I knew he had to get out of there.

Hope all is well with Panda.
Hey padolphin how's coop doing he should be in bed soon?
Wow! Scary is right! I am so glad that Merlin and Blue looked out for sweet Panda and sent the alarm. I am so glad you got to him and were able to get him out in time. What good luck! Dreadful to think of what could have occurred. . .
Hey Sherr, it's about time you got on here. Welcome to the forum, hope you find it interesting. I sure do.

:phew: Sure relieved that story had a happy ending. What precious "kids" you have to alert Mom. :ghug: to everybody.

Just goes to show it doesn't take much time for an accident to happen.
