Control Unleashed

I am pshyched. Marley and I had a class tonight with ourr new behaviorist. We are working the control unleashed program and Marley is responding so well. we were in a room with another dog - a female Neopolitan with aggression issues - and Marley had very few reactive episodes!!

I am beginning to see we will really master this problem :D :D :D

YEA!!!! Marley.....................!!!!!!!!!!!
How does it work? I did a search but the descriptions were kind of limited.
I am only just starting the book, but from my sense of the book and the two meetings we have had with the behaviorist, as well as conversations with other behaviorists I'll give it a shot. I am sure there are trainers on the forum who can add more.

Marley has issues with other dogs - she will start to bark and lunge when they approach on a leash during a walk, and occassionally in class (okay moe than occassionally).

In Marley's case, a taditional trainer would have me make eye contact with her when another dog is around - "look here" and give her a treat. when she would start to react I would be told to correct her - a snap to the collar etc and "establish dominance etc.".

Under control unleashed - the way I interpret it, Marley is being taught to relax. I reward her when she is relaxed - there is no dominance in the picture (this is a very simplified, very initial understanding). She looks at another dog in a relaxed way, i quietly tell her good girl and treat her. she lays down in a relaxed manner, "good girl" treat. In the program a clicer is used and in the next class I will start that.

Now there is also a 12 day (I thnk) protocol that I was told is as exciting as watching paint dry!

The focus here is relaxation. One of the other things, which I didn't get from trainer before (and she wass a behaviorist) was the understanding that Marley is looking to me for direction, and apparently I don;t always give her the right feedback (okay I admit it I have a touch of ADD and am not always as "present" as I could be).

Of course this is all new to us, but for a reactive dog - Marley is not agressive, she is barking at other dogs more as a way to say - hey don't mess with me I am a BIG BAD dog - really I mean it-the program is supposed to be very effective. It is also a program widely used by agility trainers, and I can see how it will help there as well.

I am sure I butchered this and would love to hear from someone who is more familiar with the program. I am taking the book with me everywhere so I can get some more reading done - I do have a plane ride this weekend, now I am looking forward to it as a chance to get some uninterrupted reading done:)
