My Dogs feet smell like corn chips..
Is there anything I can do to change the smell. We bathe him every two weeks. |
|
|
How funny! I guess there are worse things that they could smell like. We bathe our's every 2 weeks as well...do you trim the hair that grows between the pads? With Jack and Annablle, they have so much, that it was keeping moisture in and was irritating the pads. I never smelled their feet, but I bet that with the moisture trapped in there that the smell could be really bad. I don't know if any other sheepies have the same problem, but it is an idea.
Good luck, Stormi and co. |
well just like us uprights dogs feet can and will stink, well unless you like the smell of corn chips!!
could be dry skin....maybe lube them up w/ lotion and then put baggies on his feet,to let the lotion sink in.....
it is kind of funny tho!!feet smelling like corn chips!! |
| I doubt it is dry skin in between the toes, probably moisture stuck in there, like stormi said. If you trim the fur there and maybe put a bit of powder in there to dry it out it might help. |
| Yeah, so do my dogs'. Good suggestiosn re: keeping the hair trimmed and the paws clean. Don't go overboard with the powder as they lick their feet and you don't want them injesting or breathing the talc. Maybe corn starch would be better??? |
| That is sooo funny! I'm 47 and back when I was a teenager I used to say that all dogs feet smelled like Fritos. And all dogs feet still smell like Fritos. I think that's just normal dog feet smell. |
Ok ok...
Whats wrong with me? I *like* the smell of corn chips!
Deborah |
Yes, I love doggie feet smell too.....Fritos, exactly. Another smell I love is the one right behind the nose.......almost like moth balls. Only MO has a strong scent there, other dogs' it is much fainter. And to continue this line.........I like ear smell......when they are clean!! That mousey smell, no, that's bad!
Sure glad to find others who like sniffing their dog's too.......turn around if fair play!

Yes, his feet smell like cornchips---Fritoes---and it would be a BIG bag!!!
I laughed right out loud! I have said that for years (even before we had an OES!!! -- we had a cocker!) I have always said his "pawsies" smell like fritoes! My husband has just looked at me like I am crazy! I just loved seeing this posted on the OES boards! Yeah! I'm not crazy!!!
Thanks for making my day!!! |
| Dogs have scent glands in their feet and this is the musky odor that you are smelling. |
We call them "Fritoes" too! I love that we are all sooo weird.
When we let Chelsea out of her crate in the morning, her little hut smells like a corn chip factory, so whoever lets her out yells "here comes the Frito Bandito!" Warning the rest of the sleeping house to wake up and be ready for the OES pounce.
Up. |
Sometimes when i am hungry and find that i am with out anything to eat i will smell my dogs feet just to alleviate the hunger pain.
Love those corn chips! |
LOL! This is so ridiculous! That is just the natural doggy smell! Dogs use their paws to mark their territory, also, and while I'm sure we can't tell the diff, they probably can! You have a dog that "wipes" their feet after going? Thats because there are unique scent glands in their paws, nad they are marking...jeez! Let it go! |
| I thought I was losing my mind...Lucy always smells like corn chips. Her smell is over powering. YUCK!! I thought from previous posts it was her ears so I washed with medicated powder several days a week and then brought her back to the vet. I bathed her to get rid of the smell only to find ....two days after a bath boom she smells again!! It really is an over powering smell. I know that you really only have to bath a dog two to three times a year and that didn't fit the smell that came off of her!! I could bath her every week. I figured she was rolling in the rabbit dung that I wasn't aware of somewhere in the backyard. and getting all stinky again! So it is her smell. WOW! Good to know, what can we do about it? It is interesting to note that it was alway the worst when she was let go in the backyard. So we have been going out of our way not to put her in the back yard even though it is a nice size with a 6 foot fence! LOL!! Ignorance is not always bliss!! |
Again, i had to immediately laugh and think about this post...I gave Walter a big hug today and smelled food. Mind, you, not corn chips, but none other than the distinctive, ever pleasing scent of...WONTON SOUP!!!
I was laughing out loud as I asked him which Chinese buffet he had just been to
I don't think it's anything other than the combo of his shampoo, grass, and various other things. Still had to giggle when I thought of you guys and the corn chips. Cheers! |
It is a dog thing. People on my basset forum comment on the same thing.
Then a couple months ago I was in the barn, and noticed the same fritos smell from Freddie, our llama~!! I just laughed - I thought I was going crazy- LOL! |
LOL!! Both of my sheepies feet smell like absolutely nothing...unless they step in something
My Boxer, Roxie had corn chip feet though So does Peanut. |
Yesterday I was snuggling Jack and took his foot to smell...expecting the usual Frito-foot........absolutely nothing. I was so disappoointed |
| Just for fun, I thought I'd post a question on the web about dogs' feet smelling like Fritos! Imagine my surprise when I saw all these comments about Frito feet! I thought I was the only one who noticed it! I think it's cute; why should we try to eliminate the smell? Note: It's a stronger odor when dogs are sleeping. |
Hello all.
Very interesting comments from many of you.
My Beagle's paws smell like Fritos. People looked at me cross-eyed when I would tell them about it (even the Vet). But now I see Im not insane.
It would get really pungent after he comes in from the rain or snow. Unfortunately, he would lick and bite his feet until they bleed. Poor Digger. The Frito aroma starts around Fall. He would also scratch and chew his body raw.
I asked the Vet about this and she said its a yeast infection within the body. The water just agitated the situation. We gave him steriods and antibiotics. This helped a little as long as he was on the meds. But, once off it would come back with a vengence.
Digger's nickname in the Fall and Winter season is "Frito Boy".
If anyone has any advice to help Digger's condition, pls msg me!!
LOL!!! I must apologize to everyone. I was not aware this is a sheepdog site!! LOL!! I was yahooing this Frito Paw Phenomenon and came across this site. Oh well!!! Take care all!! |
Didn't we have this discussion before? And we are all so sick Just what are we all doing smelling our dogs feet Ah, I just love those little feeties
And as I said before, better than my husband's |
| When a dogs feet smell like corn chips it is yeast. Too much corn or grains in their diet. |
I doubt that is right. My dogs (and Llama) eat absolutely NO corn.
The llama gets no grain, and the dogs have very little grain in their feed. |

Maybe too many Fritos? |

Not likely, not even eating a bucket load of yeast will actually cause a yeast problem in a dog. A yeast problem occurs when the natural balance is out of whack, either dietary or immune. Pro biotics can help restore natural gut flora, and if that doesn't work a vet needs to figure out just what the immune system is reacting to.
I do not think the smell of a dogs' foot has anything to do with yeast, but more likely it's just sweat. Smelling your dog's feet is like smelling someone's armpit Have fun! |

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAH |
I don't know about the Fritto thing but...
We are currently treating a dog for a yeast problem so I know how horrible this condition can be. Panda had been on antibiotics for about 4-5 months because of recurrent bladder infections until a bladder defect was (cautiously optimistic) surgically corrected in mid-February.
Panda had started frantically licking and chewing her feet leaving them sloppy-wet. http://oesusa.com/Yeast/1.jpg We asked the vet if we should test for yeast earlier this year but were told no. We were giving antihistamines all along and began giving her allergy shots more frequently because they thought it was her allergies. We picked up a "cocktail" of 3 different antihistamines on April 20th. We were to give her 3 to 5 antihistamines every 8 hours or a maximum of 15 daily. We gave it to her one day, then decided this just was NOT working and that we needed to take a different approach.
We switched to Eagle Pack Holistic Select for the entire pack, started giving Nzymes which includes a probiotic and rubbed in Monistat on her feet for a couple of days (ask your vet first). She finally got relief. I keep the fur between the pads and toes trimmed short and spray her feet twice daily with a solution from Nzymes if I see her start to lick and this stops it. Though she still has some itching, it's been reduced by probably 90% and there is none of that insane chewing. She's been off all antihistamines for almost a month now. The vet said we probably hit the nail on the head that it was yeast. |
How hilarious!!!
I was just wondering about this the other day. I always thought that dogs pant because they can't sweat, but I SWEAR Sampson has sweaty paws, and they smell like cornflakes (maybe he's too little to smell like Fritos yet) lol.
The Superstar poast killed me, Ron... I spit my Mt. Dew out, lol.
I agree, we're a bunch of weirdos sniffing our dogs ears, paws, snouts, etc... lol. Brooklyn needs to get her teeth cleaned really bad, and when she licks herself, it makes her all stinky and everyone complains about the stinky dog... but secretly, I kinda like her stinkiness, lol. All my dogs love to be rocked in the rocking chair, and sometimes when I rock Brooklyn, I sniff her stinky paws, without even really thinking about it. |
Sweaty paws sometimes happen when the dog is stressed or excited too.
This subject gave me a good laugh the first time I read it and a bigger laugh this time around I will add...I LOVE the smelly frito feeties of my puppy!!!And he seems to love my feeties too since he is always trying to pull the shoes off me!!! Do mine smell like Fritos to him |
But I landed on this web blog because I Ask.comed "why do my dog's feet smell like fritos?"
I'M VINDICATED!
I'M AFFIRMED!
I'm sending this web page to everyone who laughed at me when I said my dog's feet stink like corn chips! Especially my husband, who said to me "Have you been forgetting to take your medication again?"
She is a lab, and she sometimes seems embarassed about her stinky feet, too! This is probably my fault because I sniff them and do the "pew! stinky feet!" thing, then she tucks her feet under chest and won't hold hands with me anymore. I give her a bath every month, or when can't sleep anymore because the entire bedroom room smells like a FritoLay factory! (she sleeps on the floor next to me)
She does sometimes chew her feet or lick them which leaves them wet. I am going to follow the advice of the poster who used the yeast treatment to see if this helps.
You guys are hilarious! Thanks for all this great information! |
I love the fact that my dog has frito toes. I love the way my dogs smell in general as long as they have not rolled in anything AWFUL,.. !

If your dog food is mostly corn, you need to find a new food. |
Okay, has anyone tried sausa for the frito feet |
^^^^^^^^^^^^
too funny
Funny this came up because I was thinking of bumping this thread up. I love frito feet. |
I love my dog's feet smell. They always smell the same and I bath him every week or two. Gosh if I only bathed him a few times a year he'd smell like garbage. Jasper's feet smell like fresh popped popcorn. It reminds me also of the smell of a puppy. Anyway, I use baby shampoo with lavender and that makes his body smell great and is super gentle on his skin and fur - he really does smell like garbage if I wait longer than 2 weeks for a bath and he's mostly inside too.
OES seem to be smell and dirt magnets unlike a Viszlas etc... Also, I have rabbits and the droppings are very dry like hay balls and have no scent, so I doubt it's rabbits. Jasper would rather eat those bite sized morsels than roll in them...! He is a real freak sometimes.
Corn chips is a new way to think about it. Sometimes I smell his feet on purpose because I'm so amazed at how popcorny they are. They are dry and trimmed too! |

They can sweat through their paw pads. |
| Mine smell like popcorn...... |
