How is Jasper doing?

I think of Jasper every day, and I was just wondering how the poor baby is doing? I hope that everything is healing!

Oh my gosh I love that raincoat on your dog.

I'm gonna post pics tomorrow. I was waiting for the ceremonial closing of the last wound. I believe it might just be tomorrow. He needs a haircut too. I'm going to try to shave him like at the groomer so he grows out all even. He still looks like a chinese crested dog.

And hopefully the next post will include happy news of the daycare coming through? NOthing yet. It's the last twist to the story that needs a happy ending.

I'm good, brought Jasper to my studio yesterday for a visit. He was good company. The university students were looking at him like he was a side show act in the circus with his bald head and orange sports shirt. I miss the days of everyone oo'ing and aah'ing at his handsome-ness. Those days will come. I still ooh and ahh over his handsome-ness though. I can actually hug him now too.

I'm working like crazy. I can't wait to graduate in June.

Jane
I too think about Jasper daily. I cant wait to see the newest pictures! :)
I think of him often. I can't watch any of the links. I just cry..Can we set up a place to make donations? Maybe your local bank or something? Please let us know.
I'm waiting on reimbursement from the doggy daycare (he said he'd be sending me something or arranging something through his lawyer last week), so I want to see if that works out. Thank you though. I'm hoping we have no more big vet appt's. Just a minor ear infection going on now. And draining lumpy saliva glands which will take about 3 months to go down but don't bother him in the least bit or require any medicine, just mother nature's time and care. Very slow on that end. Keeping fingers crossed. The worst is over I believe.
Good thoughts and prayers are continuing here....I know everything will work out. The main thing is that Jasper is healing both physically and emotionally...all because of you and your 24/7 love and care of him...He is beautiful!!!...and handsome!!!!
I am so glad to hear that Jasper is doing so well. :go:

He is a beautiful boy, and one lucky pup to have you as a mom.

Laurie and Another Lucky Pup  Oscar
YAY for Jasper!! :cheer:
On to better days now. :D
My doggy day care owner asks about Jasper every time I see her. We talk about him every time we visit since it happened and she always asks for updates. We're all pulling for him!
That is great news, Jane. Can't wait to see the new and improved Jasper pictures. :D
Yay Jasper, YAY Jane, look forward to seeing the next lot of photos, Jasper is a miracle sweetie
Jane, so happy to see how well he's doing and healing fine - physically. How about emotionally? Is he the same ol' guy or have you seen a difference since his trauma?
Jane, I hope the payment from the doggy daycare comes through. I think of Jasper and check here often to see if there are any developments. I'm glad things are continuing to improve and you are never far from my thoughts.
Like other folks here, I have people who are not members of this forum asking me about Jasper's recovery. It is such wonderful news that Jasper is pulling through so well. I'm sure it has so much to do with the excellent care you gave him, and still give him.
I know the money shouldn't be the issue. But $5000 is way too much money. I hope the daycare owner pays what he has agreed to pay.
Now for an update on Jasper:

The biggest wound is "technically" closed now (the one that was open down to the muscle), but it's still a little creepy looking. Another week perhaps, but I can't wait it scars over so I can let him stop wearing his kilt-cone. He's navigating quite well with it though. In a way he needs to be deterred a bit from going too fast. Now that he's feeling well he's really bouncing off walls and such. I cringe when I see him run in the yard, but the vet said he's a-ok for this. I imagine from being bed-bound for so long his muscles have atrophied a bit - he's a little clumsy and limps just a tiny bit. He has to get back in shape a little.

I'm still getting letters too from Youtubers. A handful from daycare owners, which are the most interesting, because they are very much disturbed by the event and don't see it as Jasper's fault and state that a waiver signed means nothing in the case of negligence. Also some good tips on how to break up a fight - I keep thinking this advice can apply even to dog parks. Gosh, I had no idea about fights, - they are rare, but in a dog park the same scenario could happen. Anyway, she said she leaves 3 trained employees with a pack. If there is a scuffle, and they do happen, she said one employee runs away making excited noises and the other two deal with the dogs in the scuffle. She said most of the time the rest of the pack will want to run and play with the running, verbally interesting employee. Sounds a little funny to envision, but at least it works.

On another note, I have a feeling the daycare owner is stalling again on me. I haven't heard anything in about a week now. I got the estimate from the surgical specialist a few days ago for the removal of his salivary gland if it doesn't heal up (or rather the ducts don't open up which is the real problem). The gland is functioning, but that's the problem because his saliva can't drain. Here is a link to another story - I guess dogs have 4 salivary glands. They can having swelling of them behind the occipital area (eyes), under the tongue or on the neck like Jasper. I would much prefer the neck. His are nothing, as I've said compared to the cases I found on the internet. As with anything of course!

http://www.acvs.org/AnimalOwners/Health ... yMucocele/

He's not in pain, but I hope these don't get infected. Time will tell. It's going to take 3 months to know if they will resolve on their own. So the estimate on the surgery for removal of the glands - $3645 on the high end. So this is another reason why it'd really be nice for the daycare owner to help with the past bill. It can help me to provide for the 2nd half if it happens. Hoping this will not be necessary.

I posted some new pictures. I didn't get to the haircut yet. The days go by in 2 seconds flat.

Also, one of my friends just adopted a sweet golden mix that is 10 years old. After she settles into her new home and Jasper finally heals we plan to do some playdates. That sounds about his speed - a grandma golden retriever. What really stinks is I'm going to have to be so cautious in protecting his bubble neck - dogs even in play will go right for those areas - neck, head, ears. Maybe I can have him wear a football helmut when he meets her. LOL

Ok, I'm off...will be back when other news comes up. Thanks again for the well wishes. We still need them.

Jane
Wow, he looks awesome in the photos. It's barely been a month and you'd never know what he's gone through. Keep it up Jasper!
Yeah! Thanks for the update. I'm glad that he's healing so well.
Look at him!! He's doing so well, you'd never guess the trauma he's suffered. WTG, Jasper!! 8)
thanks for the update so glad he is doing ok..
Mony and Laci are so happy (butt wiggling) that Jasper is doing so well. Once again, way to go Jane.
Jasper looks so great! I love his guarding position.
I am so glad...we have been so disturbed and worried by his story. He looks wonderful!!!! We are all so happy for you!!!
 YAY JASPER :clappurple: :cheer:

Absolutely amazing the last lot of photos, Jane I am so thrilled to see the road to recovery of your special man. JUST AWESOME :D
Just a quick note:

Yes, indeed my man. I call him that sometimes and I'm taken aback by it. Somehow I relate differently to a male sheepie than a female. Weird. Like he's my protector. I've always had female dogs. So it's still a weird phenomena for me. I make sure never to dress him in a feminine way. That's weird. (he wears a jacket when he's in shave-down mode)

So I finally got the bravery to give Jasper a haircut. He was about 5 different lengths with varying almost-bald spots. I purchased another a5 oster turbo and made all the difference with blade wash. The last one I had I returned as I was too dumb to know that they won't work without blade wash. Even the person at the store looked at me funny when I asked for it - like what's that for? Hmmm. I can't risk taking him to a groomer - I'm sure they wash the instruments they use, but he's still got healing wounds with granulation tissue and his bubble neck which I think might freak them out a bit.

So yes, like a hot knife through butter. I think I might have gone overboard a little and made him a bit too short, but he grows so fast he'll be fluffy in no time. And I can't wait for all one length. He's kind of cool like a dalmation too - so soft. Another rule of thumb like taking the paper off of the cupcake before feeding - don't do a shave-down on a sheepie in your living room. Took twice as much time to vacuum as it did to do the haircut. Once I got going it was so much fun. He's had it done before and he just acted like I was giving him a massage. He's a bit nutty now about letting me trim his toenails, but the hair is OK to cut.

Also got him a new harness for walks today with black velvet on it. Like a gentle leader but more heavy duty and luxurious. I really love it. He was using a halty and I hate those because, well, he hates them.

The lady at the boutique where I got the harness knew Jasper when we walked in. She used to work at the other daycare in town that he stayed at as a pup (7 months old) a year ago. She knew the whole story. That was a nice surprise.

Other than that, sent the estimates for the bubble neck surgery to the daycare owner - he called immediately back today when he got it (sent it certified mail). He still claims he will reimburse and lawyers are arranging papers. Not sure what to believe. It's been 3 weeks. I was listening to all my voicemails though. I have at least 3 of them with him saying he's going to pay for all the vet bills. If he's trying to avoid me, he's really dumb by making all those statements on record, but on the other hand, maybe he's just having hard times and it will take a while or his lawyer is super slow. I hope the latter.

Ok, will post a few new pics.

Jane
WOW!! Just saw your new pictures!! He looks so good!! I love the pictures of hime stealing the cupcake...
Jasper looks so nice and clean. All that nice smooth skin! :D

The wounds healed very nicely. Don't worry about his thinness. All his calories were going into healing himself. He will start to gain soon.

Nice looking collar he has too - very handsome boy! :D
He looks beautiful!!! I am so happy for you, I have cried for him as well. So very glad he is going to be all well soon. :hearts: :go:
I have been wondering about Jasper as well, he looks so handsome!!
I am so glad that he is feeling better!!!
wow he looks sooo good. I love his collar:)
Thanks for the updates. He's looking so much better. Will keep the good wishes coming that he won't need the second surgery......Kathy
I'm soooo happy for you - he looks wonderful! How is his reaction around other dogs?
The only other dogs we met were in the vets office so far and one in a boutique for dogs. He's curious and quiet. He's never been a barker or a growler among other dogs even if the other dog is a real yapper. We met up with a yorkshire terrier that was going blalistic barking (but was darn cute ), but Jasper just sorta looked and then continued to check out the cookie/baked goods counter as that was more interesting. We plan to set up a date with a 10 year old golden, but weather has been yucky. Dog parks have always freaked me out a bit (too big, nobody watching the dogs at times, and you'd never get to the dogs quick enough if a fight did happen). I've heard they are good, but you just have no idea if the other dogs had their shots and everything so we'll wait for the rain to stop and meet up with my friend's senior dog.

Jane
The new pictures are GREAT! Jasper has certainly come a long way! He is a handsome boy! I feel the same way about dog parks...freaked out.
Here is a copy and paste from my local dog park, listed as helpful hints.

Always keep an eye on your dog. Mischief can happen very quickly. Know your dog's habits; make sure that its behavior is not threatening to other dogs. Even a friendly dog may intimidate a more passive dog with its overtures. Be ready to call your dog off if it becomes too pushy.

Don't allow dogs to congregate in large groups. Dogs in groups will often have problems, including dogfights. Owners should spread out and walk away in different directions while calling their dogs. Anticipating trouble will avoid a lot of problems.

What to do if a fight does occur. If things go wrong - stay sane. Never reach into the middle of a dogfight. You will get bitten - often by your own dog. Distract the dogs to divert their attention. A loud whistle, a pocket air horn, or a blast of water from a water bottle, pan or hose can work. Or, grab a dog by it's collar. Yell for help if you need more people. If your dog is causing problems for others, please leave the park. Come back another time when everyone, including your dog, has calmed down.
Jane what are the odds that I somehow missed all this that had happened to Jasper ? And the strangest thing that I had been thinking about you and Jasper for the last month now.

I have not been able to stop thinking of what happened to him . When I look at the pictures I just cry!

I think the hardest thing is, I know how much our boys (all three real brothers) are alike and they don't have a mean bone in there body , so it makes it so hard to imagine what those dogs did to him. :(

Every time I see Jaspers pictures I see my Harley's face and cry ! (Bob said I am not aloud to look at the pictures anymore ... )

Anyway, I am praying for him everyday.....

Please give Jasper a BIG HUG from his brothers harley and Junior . :ghug:

:hearts: Jasper looks great at the last pictures!
I wish you good luck when he meet other dogs.
Make sure that the first dogs are the kind ones
and my guess is that he will behave very well.

:D Best wishes from me and Sancho.

Sweet kisses to Jasper.
OMG, Jane! Jasper looks so amazing considering all he's been through!! :hearts: That sweet boy will continue to be in my prayers. :ghug:
I posted some happy pics of Jasper playing in our 13 inches of snow we had over the last 2 days. So no more injury photos I promise!!

Antoinette: Well same goes for the situation with Howie, it just happened a few days ago and I by total chance came across a photo of Junior and then followed links to see your story. Funny how things happen. I have to check & see how he's doing by the way.

Jane
Jasper looks wonderful!! :D
This picture is totally amazing after what happened to him not even a month ago.

He looks so good. Good job Mom!
WOW, Jasper looks just GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! His healing has been nothing short of amazing.
Oh how wonderful!! It's so nice to see him playing and having a good time. Just another amazing testament to their indominitable spirits. :hearts:
Jane-
So glad to see the updated pics of Jasper. I can't believe that's the same dog. We're so happy Jasper is getting better and better each day. I love the snow shots. Sheepies sure do seem to love the snow. Sending sheepie hugs to Jasper ;)
WOW!!!

I was halfway down the page and came across your post Jane, referring to Jaspers snow day and clicked on the photos. Thought ohhh the "snow dance" is too precious not to share and was going to add it to my post and Gasp...see Wyn had already done it! Great minds think alike!!!

I'm not sure if you recently saw 6girls post about her little sheepie, Kaylee. On her website she had featured her little sheepie girl doing the "snow dance" which symbolized a truly happy sheepie. Amazingly both Jasper and Kaylee are doing the snow dance. Just brought tears to my eyes.

So happy Jasper is doing the dance and learning to smile again!

You may have missed it but we had a bit of a thread going because my trainers both behaviorists had said they don't like dog parks - particularlly for herding dogs. I don't take my female, but admit I take my male for some exercise - but I go to "dog park" in my private community that occurs twice a week at a specific time with less than 10 dogs at anyone time. don't feel you have to take him to dog park.

He looks great!
Haven't bben on the site in a really long time. I just ran across the posting on Jasper. I am soooo sorry about what has happened, but I am relieved to see that he is soing so well!!! Please keep the updates coming. I will be keeping the two of you in our thoughts

Jill
We need a Jasper update with some pics of healed skin and some fuzz growing!
We do need a Jasper update!

I was at Oliver's therapy last night, and guess who was talking about Jasper! Jane, you are doing a fantastic job of educating the public. Doggie Daycare owners in Kansas City know Jasper's story, and are going through safety checks at their facility to ensure this can't happen there. I was so excited to tell them that we know you, and that Jasper is doing great!

Fantasic job Jane, and thanks for helping keep my little guy safe.
Please do give an update on Jasper. Maddie and I have been wondering how that beautiful boy is doing :) We hope all is well and Jasper continues to get better and better each and every day.
Hi Jane I am glad to hear Jasper is on the mend and I am sure with your care he will have no lasting effects, we all think of him and he is still in our thoughts daily.

I hope that the daycare people fulfill their promise and they pay for their negligence regarding Jasper.
