Gentle Leader

I haven't had much success at walking both my 3 yr old male with Toby, our new 1 1/2 yr old male rescue. Toby pulled and lunged even on a training collar (choke chain) and this got Charlie to start misbehaving as well. I simply wasn't strong enough to control both dogs on a walk so they haven't been getting many walks lately.

Based upon some comments in this forum, I decided to try a Gentle Leader collar. Amazing invention. Toby bit the leash for about five steps and then settled down to walk calmly by my side. Any attempt to move in front or lunge to the side was instantly self-corrected in a way that brought his attention back to me. From then on, it was slack leash and by-my-side.

If there ever was an instant cure for a dog that insists on taking YOU for a walk, this is it. I'm sold. I'm going to get one for Charlie as well. While he is generally a good walker, he will misbehave if he sees a squirrel or sometimes another dog. I tried the Gentle Leader on him and he seems to accept it fine.

What size did you buy? My girls are 64 and 72 lbs.

Marley is 65 pounds and I think we got a medium
Charlie is 110 lbs. Toby is 93-- both pretty large males. I ended up buying two, large size. Make sure you fit them according to instructions (tight neck loop, looser nose loop). If you buy it at Petsmart (on sale currently there) they will help you fit it to the dog before you leave the store.
I have the Halti Collar (pretty much the same thing)
It did take my two a little bit of getting used to. Rags still tries to shake it off for most of the walk.
The pulling went from feeling like I was trying to control Clifford the Big Red Dog to the same feeling as walking my 12 lbs dogs.

I love it and so does my back and shoulders. 8)

Kata (Professor Boni) pointed out in another post that there's a pretty significant difference in the Halti and Gentle leader (that I never noticed since I haven't used either in a long time). The Gentle Leader is always around the muzzle while the Halti fits loosely and only tightens up when you need to apply the corrections. For training purposes, I think the Halti gives you a little better edge.
