What to do or buy with my tax refund

Hi,

This article is aimed at our US members. There is talk (and a strong possibility) that the US Governement is going to issue some sort of a tax rebate to attempt to stimulate the US economy.

This will work BEST if people use the monies to purchase goods and/or services that are manufactured or rendered by US companies.

PLEASE, if you receive a "windfall" tax refund or rebate from this program, and if you don't need it for bills right away, I ask you that you consider spending it on US made products by a US based company, or services by a US merchant.

I'd like to list a few suggestions in this thread. Please post US products made by US companies that are available for purchase, with price tags of somewhere around $500 to $2000 as some may want to use the rebate as a down payment on a larger purchase .

My first suggestion was going to be a wood stove from Vermont Castings, as the purchase as well as the use of the stove would be good for the country... but on their website they say that they are a division of a Canadian company now. :(

Anyone have any suggestions for energy efficiency products that are made in the US by a US company that can serve this double role?

Thanks!!!
You have lots of time to think because it looks like the earliest that checks are going to be mailed out is June for the rebate.

As always, I assume I'll get nothing and then if I do, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Our government in action.
On Congress has to fall all over themselves first saying this will be bad for the government.....sure, less money for them to spend. We had a Vermont Casting stove, very, very good.

Good Ron! Buy USA.

I'm not necessarily against all imports, just for this money one ought to think about the propriety of using it for its intended purpose; to stimulate the US economy.

June, eh? Well by then it will be recession and the money will only be able to help us get out of it. Of course by then inflation will be more than 10% and the Fed will be tightening down on the money supply by increasing interest rates and choking the economy, so I fear it will be too late. Oh well.
I read somewhere that the last time we got the "bonus refund"
that 40% of it was back into the economy within 2 weeks. I
think a lot of people are going to have to use it to pay off
heating expenses from over the winter though. I just got
500 gallons of oil, and honestly I don't know how some
people are doing it this year. I think the fixed/lower income
people are going to be counting on that money to get them
out of the heating expense hole!

If we get one, our family wouldn't get one which stinks. lol Something about me not working and my husband not being in the US last year ...I was only half listening when my husband was telling me why.
I'll use my "windfall" to make a payment towards the new furnace I had installed last month.

Hey--you get paid for living in your state, so no complaints!

I think we'll use ours to build a fence to keep Barney in and the little pooping dogs next door out. And hopefully supplement my maternity leave...and maybe a pair of shoes 8)

Go jump off a cliff :( I want M-O-N-E-Y. It's expensive to live here ;) Do you know up north (further up in alaska), it's $8 for a gallon of milk! Besides, that's not fair that b/c he was in Iraq serving his country, we don't get money. I'm just complaining b/c I like money. 8)

But don't you get paid by the US gov't? All you have to do to get one is file an income tax return. that's what I keep hearing.

Seriously... get so that you understand the issue to ensure it's true. Then contact the local TV station's investigative reporter and tell them that because your husband is in the military and was deployed to Iraq you won't be getting the stimulus payment like every other American.

You'll get your payment.

OOOOh SEXY! Victoria's Secret watch out!
*sigh* I miss heels... They sound cute! :D
Jo, if it is true that you do not qualify, then that is quite possibly one of the most ludicrous things I have ever heard. A man serving overseas in the U.S. military isn't entitled to this refund? Who makes these crazy rules? I certainly hope whoever talked to your husband was joking..........

I agree with Ron. Contact the media, because most Americans would be horrified to learn that all of our deployed troops may not be entitled to this refund BECAUSE THEY WERE DEPLOYED serving our country. That little loophole needs to be addressed.

Laurie and Oscar
I just called my husband to ask him. Again, I wasn't paying close attn the first time we discussed this. While in Iraq, their (soldiers) income is tax-free, so that's why they don't qualify. shucks.
But retirees on Social Security and disability recipients are getting the $300 minimum payment (instead of the $600). I think you still need to contact that TV station.
Don't you have to pay income tax on your Social Security and Disability checks, though? :?

I agree deployed military personnel should qualify despite their deployment income being tax free.

Darcy - pics of the new shoes are in order!! I wanna see!! :excited:
