Help Needed Finding a Vet

I was wondering if anyone knew a good resource for finding a Vet?

My puppies are 12 weeks old, and the vet has admitted they are the only sheepdogs in her practice.

Anyway; she treated them for UTI, and when dripping continued after the bacteria cleared up, she prescribed a medicine for incontinence. We were warned that one of the side effects could be hyerpactivity, but instead, my dogs became lethargic and developed diarhea. Called the vet back, and she wasn't in, but her partner at the practice suggested cutting thier dose in half.

Now one of my girls is fine, but the other started to vomit this morning, in addition to her completely liquid stools. I called my vet at 7:30, and again when she hadn't returned my call at 10:30.

In short, her suggestions were just that; suggestions. "Well you could try..." I need a vet that is going to answer my calls when my 12 week old is vomitting and has watery stools. I need a vet that is going to treat my dogs, not make suggestions. AND she didn't know that her practice partner had cut their doseage. She suggested I take my girl off the meds, but didn't suggest an alternative medicine for the incontinence. She didn't even suggest I bring her in for a visit.

So; does anyone know; is there a listing of reputable vets online? A Search Engine? A rating of vets? I don't want to just open my phone book and pick one randomly.

the vet I have now was well recommended by 2 friends. :(
Try contacting the OES rescue folks near to you, they probably have a vet they use fairly often.

That's how we came to use our vet, so hethey have seen hundreds of sheepdogs.
Definately phone OES rescue group in your state to see if they can recommend a vet locally that has some experience in the breed.

Medication for a 12 week old pup for incontinence? Very strange and unusual for such a tiny pup to be putting her on medication for incontinence at that age. The long term affects are not good starting so young. I really believe there is another underlying problem and not urinary incontinence on a 12 week old.

So yes do speak to your local OES rescue group and hopefully they can advise a good vet and also tell them about the problems you are having at the moment, they might be a wealth of help and advice for you to be able to talk too about what is going on with these babies.
Thanks for the feedback, and for everyone that was so supportive on the chat this afternoon. Unfortunately Georgia doesn't have any OES rescues; I believe the nearest are Florida and Texas. But I've spoken with a few people with Sheepdogs in the area, and they have helped.

I'm now more sure than ever that my vet made a mistake giving my pups this medicine, and I will be seeking a new vet. I have a few candidates, and I will be stopping by thier offices on Monday to talk with them.

Luna hasn't had any food today; I'm trying to give her system some time to heal. But she's romping and playing with her sister Tonks, so i'm re-assured that she's doing okay. If she worsens after I feed her in the morning, I'll seek and emergency vet tomorrow to take her to.

Again; thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Just wondering how Luna is doing today and if you found a good vet.

Here is the OES Rescue Contact List:

OES Rescue Contacts

Georgia DOES have rescue contacts. They may or may not be able to help you. Georgia is a decent sized state ... but for the future, either one of their own vets or perhaps a vet that one of their adopters uses may be a good option for your two OES puppies.

Right now you need to rely only on yourself and be PROACTIVE.
No rescue group, forum or chat room can help your pup's immediate medical needs.
Get your pup to a vet or an Emergency Vet.
Watery stool, diarrhea and no appetite -- NEVER a good sign for a pup that young.

I did call the emergency vet; the man I talked to left me feeling that they weren't going to give my puppy decent care either.

My vet prescribed medicine for my 12 week old puppy that was completely inappropriate for a dog of her age. I didn't trust at that point that the ER vet was going to do her any better.

As it turned out, the advice I received from this board and its members was invaluable. If Luna had been behaving sickly, other than the vomitting, I'd have had her to the emergency vet, regardless of how stupid they were on the phone. But that she played and frolicked with her sister normally led me to believe that this wasn't life or death. Luna wasn't lethargic; and she DID have an appetite; I just had to withhold her food from her until I was sure she wouldn't bring it back up.

As of yesterday evening she was doing well; holding down the food I was giving her. And today she's great; normal stools, normal appetite (I'm still feeding her smaller portions, and the adjusted "sick tummy" menu) and playing ferociously.

Thanks to everyone for thier help. I'm still searching for a new vet, and hopefully I'll find someone good that I can trust.

And thank you for that link; I was unaware of those contact people; just knew of the individual shelters. I'll contact them and ask for Vet recommendations.
an Update:

I took my girls to our new Vet today. I postively LOVE her, she knew all about Multi-Drug sensitivity in Sheepies, ordered a MDR-1 for my girls, and really spent alot of time listening to me and my concerns. She was really caring with my pups, and I think we've struck gold. So thanks to everyone with thier good ideas for helping me out!

If anyone needs a vet in or around Atlanta, heres the link to my new one:
