GOLDENDOODLE

We just adopted a goldendoodle from a family who has been having a hard with this dog. We think our dog, Frodo, was a puppy mill dog. What can we do to help our dog. He is scared and crouches in corner. We have to carry him out in and to use bathroom. What do I need to do?

You might try to get him out with a "normal" dog or two so he can learn normal dog behavior. One of mine came from the humane society and she was very shy... after we got our OESs, she learned from they're friendly behavior that she didn't have to be so fearful.

Sometimes if you ignore the dog... as Cesar would say, "no talk, no touch, no eye contact"... it can take the pressure or demand off the dog. Walk through the room and toss him fabulous treats but don't ask anything else from him. When it comes time to eat, you might try hand feeding. All of this is to teach him that you are a bearer of good things. It's going to take time to build the trust and confidence.

Also consider bringing in a professional dog trainer or behaviorist... they can work one-on-one with you.

Others here will share some ideas. Good luck and thanks for seeing the possibilities in a frightened dog.
A shy & unsocialized OES was placed with us when she was 5. First thing is is to be very patient, it has taken a couple of years for her to almost be as social as a normal sheepdog. We just kept putting her in situations where other people and dogs were around. Certainly, you want to make sure he can feel safe in these situations, but the constant exposure did wonders for us.
I adopted an abused Toy Poodle about 15 yrs ago. His first couple of days all he did try to get as far under my kitchen cabinets as he could. If I put him in his dog bed all he's do was sit in there. It took a while for him to get used to his new surroundings. Once he did he was the greatest dog ever. But he went from being locked in a room with many other poodles, never seeing the light of day until he was 3 yrs old to a completely new life.

It was a major adjustment for him, but he handled it quite well.
It took close to a month to teach him how to walk on a leash. Of course with him being only 8 lbs it was very easy for me to carry him out to go potty.

I wish you the best of luck!
We just adopted a goldendoodle too/ if you want to chat I would be more then happy!
