scared of the dryer at the groomers...help

Nigel is a big chicken, but the hair dryer thing is the worst. When he goes to the groomers he gets so scared if she uses the regular dryer on him that he gets the runs. I think the next trip will be with no breakfast and a dose of immodium. I honestly don't get it. He barks if I sneeze, sing, use the vacuum, play my bass...and totally runs out of the room when I dry my hair. The biggest problem is he is 7 months old and still in coat...the cage dryer is taking too long now...all suggestions will be tried or considered. Treats are not interesting when the blow dryer is on.

Poor Nigel!!!!!!
Do you think it is the noise or the heat that upsets him??? Or a combination?? If when you run a vacuum he is scared..and vacuum and a hair dryer sound alike ( kind of).

If he is that scared of the noise..maybe you could start the dryer on the lowest setting and maybe across the room while you play with him...then bring it closer,,,,closer....until he is not bothered by the noise.

I think you will need to desentitize (sp) him but I'm not sure how to do it correctly. Maybe Kata can help???

Keep us posted...
Not having any luck yet...and I think it is the noise. He hates the vacuum too. He is the biggest scaredy cat/dog I have ever seen. Maybe he needed his real mom for an extra two weeks...who knows.

I tried to get him near my hair dryer yesterday...he just ran away from me. He is such a baby. Bella gives him more confidence at home. I am planning on trying my dryer with him more at home...but giving him a few days off. Never had one who was such a big chicken!
Hey Wendy,

Nanny has the same problem! She's only been to the professional groomer's once so far. They had to bathe her 3 times because every time they took her to the big dryer she peed on herself! :o :(

Maybe they will out grow this? Nanny is not scared of a normal hair dryer. I point mine at her sometimes when I'm drying my hair, and she thinks it's a game. I hope it's just a phase because bathing her myself is a lot of work! I would like to be able to taker her for a full bath and blow out sometimes.

Sorry I don't have any advise yet on how to fix it. :P
Wendy...

One more thought....

Is Bella afraid???

Maybe seeing Bella near the dryer, playing with you all relaxed and happy--he may get brave enough to overcome his fear because if Bella is OK and having fun maybe he will want to be with you guys too.

A trainer once told me, that if you can find your dogs "bliss point" (something the dog goes crazy over, whether it is a toy, treat or person) The WANT of that thing may be stronger than the fear...Don't know if it is true....... just remembered it....

Keep us posted.....and GOOD LUCK to Both you and Stephanie......
Are you kidding? Bella practically climbs onto the grooming table. She loves to be brushed and the dryer doesn't bother her at all. If you blow it at her face she tries to bite the air...silly girl. She loves being pampered. It's just my baby boy who is scared of noises.
ohhhhhhhhh!!! (Get Ali to visit....maybe she can work her majic on Nigel....   )
George has the smae problem and for the last couple of months I have been putting my hairdryer on him when I have been doing my hair!!

he doesn't mind it so much now. I'm not sure this will make him any less afraid of the groomers drier but it's worth a try!!
Clyde isn't scared of the vacuum but it makes him insane. Sometimes, I turn the vacuum on and just leave the room for awhile and let him go crazy for a bit until he desensitizes himself a little and, then usually, he tires of it in a few minutes and then just lies down. If I don't let him do this, he'll chase me around while I'm trying to vacuum, dive bombing the vacuum, barking his head off and biting at it.

When I'm feeling more motivated, I actually work with him on keeping out of the vacuuming space, making him sit away from me and correcting him every time he tries to approach by taking him back to his spot to sit. Some days though, I lack the motivation to train and vacuum at the same time so that's when I do the mini desensitizing.
It's probably best to begin working him through this at home first. Those noisy dryers are scary and the air must feel strange when it hits them. With patience, repetition and good treats he'll probably adjust fine.

I have a noisy Metro Airforce Commander dryer and while none of them actually like it, they do tolerate the process. I started them out with short sessions and good treats. If they tolerated the dryer, they got treat after treat after treat. It took 2-4 tries with all of them but Kaytee.

Kaytee took the longest to get used to it... probably because of her vision problem. The stinker would get upset, whip around and try to bite the air or the nozzle. SHE HATED IT but I didn't give her a choice. So I put a lead around her neck and kept her close to me while I allowed the air to make contact... I kept the nozzle farther away so the air wasn't as forceful at first. It took several sessions but she'll now stand still for me to blow dry her completely... as long as I have treats.
Hey Wendy
Is he afraid of the dryer when you are all together and playing near it?

Pita had the exact same problem and the groomer kept calling me to pick her up later... It turns out that she freaks out about everything and every little sound when she's at the groomers alone, but when Royce, our cocker spaniel is there with her, she literally climbs on to the grooming table and is fine with it all!!!!

Now, we have always take them to the groomers together...
My groomer's dryer is so loud it sounds like a vacuum. Nigel ia afraid or dislikes a lot of loud noises. I am trying to get him near my dryer,, but he doesn't like that either. Hopefully he will grow out of these things...I will keep trying. He actually let me vacuum the house today with only a little barking.
in the uk i had a wonderful groomer the first time i took einy she rang and said can i come and get him he barking up a storm, i'll be 30 mins i said.

i get there and he laying on the matt in frount of the door looking all pretty.

he scared of the dryer she said, i don't know how but he escaped from the dryer cabinet ( it never happen before he got the door open) and hated the hand dryer

oh i said what do i do

she said its ok we will just let him air dry!!!!!

so i would drop einy off carry him in to the crate and leave 3/4 hours later i would get the call he raedy, so off i would drive.

and there would be my big sappy dog sat on the mat by the door no lead no collar all happy waiting for me to get there.

they never complaind not once. the only way to get him to stop barking was to let him out of his crate and sleep on the mat. and they never used the dryer on him.

yet in the states he let them wash. cut and dry him i think i all depends on the groomer and how well your dog likes them as well. he knew he could get away with blue murder in the uk, they could not say no to him.

einy hates the hoover to its his nemisis he even checks to see if it still in the closet when i go in to get coats etc.

zoe and einy
