So who wants to learn how to groom?

Is anyone really interested in a get together to learn how to do regular groooming/trimming/show prep?

I think that if we get some people together, we could make a big party out of it. I'll volunteer my house and services. I only have 2 spare rooms but there is a Red Roof Inn one exit away that is pretty cheap.
If we get enough people, we could even tape it and post some step by steps for everybody.

Let me know if anybody's serious about this and we'll look at it for Spring, after my patio is put in. (Stupid snow and mud!!)
Maybe the Jills will even come back out to PA!!
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
I would be interested. Of course, this discussion comes just a week after I gave up and had the wigglebums shaved. I gave it a good run, though, we made it nine months. If I'd had the knowledge of how to deal with the undercoats properly, though, I might have been able to handle it better. So, yeah, I'd like to learn how to do it correctly. :D

And the Girls Gone Wild video...ummm...I mean Grooming video...sounds like a great idea. 8)
count me in - definitely. my only problem will be scheduling. On the way to work this morning I was thinking it is about time for a road trip!
I'm kicking around the last weekend in April. No big shows and should be a little warmer.
The next option is the 16th of May weekend. Any big conflicts or votes?
I like the idea of April - not probably warm enough up here to have other weekend plans - May can start to get to be outdoor weather.
Hmm, I may be able to swing a trip. I already got a partial lesson but I'm always up for the social experience of it all.

You are still owed a feet trimming lesson!
ME ME pick me!!!!!! I would love to get more grooming experience. I will even bring the wine :D
If you're bringing the wine, you're automatically in!!
Well if that's all it takes ...
I can bring rum :)
Hey Rum is good too Pina coladas all around!!!!
I would love to come...but with the move and more travel I just can't make it. But I definitely want to see the video!!!

Ps: You just gave me an idea, maybe I should do the same thing except I would do a "Who wants to learn how to train their dogs?"
I think you'd be overrun with people!! Your class is a little more vital than mine. At least with my students, if they fail they just shave the dog!!
Count Rick & I in, We don't drink, but I can cook, just let me know when so I can book a room. I can bring home made pasta and sauce, also can bring some bruschetta as a nice appetizer. Elliott loves road trips, and Rick and I are always up for an adventure
Kata I'd definitely be interested in your class! :excited:

Mandy, let's try for the April weekend, so if we want to go to Sheepiepalooza, it won't be too much for one month. :P
I'm in for sure. April works for me.
Plus I'm close so I'll bring whatever you want.

I have a camera and a camcorder - If you all don't mind,
it might be nice to have some pics and video of the
actual grooming. I don't know about anyone else but at
my age it helps a lot to have a visual reminder!

Shellie
(DUH! I guess I should have read through all the posts before
I jumped on this!)
April works for me :D
I am new to this forum, but I am very interested in attending. I could certainly use all the help I can get. I live in New Mexico and havent been able to find much help out here with proper grooming. Guess you could say Im attempting to teach myself. Anyway I am taking my 9 month old OES to her first show next weekend. I have been attending handling classes and have been given some advice on the proper show groom. I would probably give just about anything to learn the correct way to groom for show. I have been working with my groomer on the bum trim and think we have it ok, but I know I have a long way to go. Being taught by people who know whats correct and to actually be able to learn in person, not from a book would be great.
You girls have got your priorities right vino trimming and grooming, hope non end up lop sided 8)
I'll bring the practice dogs :D . Since Gabriel and Jill's Jonah have such different coats it would be good experience, and Clyde needs his butt finished
What an awesome idea! I'm so jealous that you guys are doing this, and I'm not close enough to go.
I'm new to the forum but would love to come if I'm invited (hint, hint). Besides what I would add is total ignorance so that no matter what everybody else does they will look better than I.
Everybody except the creepy people are invited, you just have to speak up and say you want to join in. We don't do private invitations around this place, it's the loud and obnoxious people that get the most attention!!!
So come on up!

I hope to bring Marley as well (depending on where she is in her "tolerance training". She is just a darling to groom and I need all the help I can get!

Oh well...
We already met you, you're ok.
Creepy... no crazy.... yes I will be there with beverage and dog!!! April is fine for me Just let me know what hotel/motel everyone is staying at. Then we go to Kata's new house for a week of dog training !!!

Cindy (4 dog night) and it is snowing here so it will indeed be a 4 dog night!!

Wonder if we can get a group rate !
Here's the link for the Red Roof Inn that's close

Looks like you need 10 rooms to be a group.

I'm also checking on another hotel that's a little closer. They just started allowing pets. Here it is.

There is an antique show in town during the April weekend so hotels seem to be getting tight.
So....should we set a date so we can book rooms????April is just around the corner I looked at the other hotel (duh I forgot the name ......the closer one) they offer breakfast :D I would come the night before so I am rested to wrestle my goof and stay that night and go home in the am....thats just me and I am close enough to drive but what the hey.....soooo what are we doing?? This sounds like fun. I have a dryer (table/crate) and lots of brushes, too bad I don't know how to properly use them.
Okay, so let's say the weekend of April 25th-27th and if people can only make it one day or whatever then they have a window.
And if you guys want to take a look at those 2 hotels and see which one you prefer, I can stop down and see about the group rates and if they'll do us any favors.
If you are definitely coming, let me know so I can start a list.
Darn it! I forgot. That's my anniversary weekend. I mentioned it to James and looked at me like I was a monster. We were gonna go to Vegas to celebrate the one year where we started it. Looks like we won't be making it. :(
I want to and need learn show grooming but impossible long way :(
definitely (or as best as that ever gets) coming.
If th egroup is large enough we may need a conference room at the hotel to set up the grooming tables and practice on the dogs :)
Hey Jill, maybe we need to put together a Michigan grooming day
I would be interested in learning anything I can! Allie is starting to hate going to the groomers, I am even plucking her ear hairs at home now, so she is not so wigged out!
But I would also be interested in a road trip to Harrisburg! Will check the weekend out on my calendar.
Just wonder how Allie will act with all these Sheepies to play with? Being groomed will be the last thing on her mind! She will want to play.......
I am in, any day that weekend is fine or both days. (I will probably need both days ...I apparently am a slow learner  )

I'd be happy to share all I've learned with the caveat that I'm not a pro and do not claim to be! I definitely don't know everything but I've learned from a few really good people, including Mandy and just recently, Amber from Blueshire in Canada and I'm happy to share that knowledge. I never want to come off like I'm an expert on my own. I hope to be someday but I'm not there yet!
I will book a room when the date is confirmed. Is it still April 25-27? I will probably drive and can bring some kind of table. We'll all need tables. We can share the vino and blender.
Shoot...I don't have a table :( I groom my dogs on a dining room table in my basement. I put a movers pad over it and then a quilt. I am very nervous when we use the basement for get togethers as Guinness can jump on it from the floor 8O Somebody tell Bob I need one!!!!(and tell him what kind to get!)

This is the one I just got for LeAnne. It comes blue or pink - she got the pink. It is working well, and you will not find a better price!!

http://grooming.petedge.com/catalog/pro ... ctId=47306
OKAY! I'M IN!!!

And I'll be bringing the table & tack box with me.
I'm in, and I can just drive back and forth. Don't think I'll bring Drez because 1) not sure if she'll still be with us in 3 months' time, and 2) if she is still with us, because she's so lame, she would get too stressed around other dogs. But I would love to see everyone I already know and meet the new people!!
Is that weekend confirmed? Please let me know which hotel to contact. Thanks.
I may make the trip . That weekend would be good, at least as of right now. I have a friend that lives close so I would be staying at their house.
Mandy,
Which hotel??? I like the one that sreves breakfast :) Dee your girl is so cute in your avatar!! I have a boy so I don't do bows awwee she is cute!
OK I am on a roll!!!!. Who wants to share a room Quality Inn 2 queens non smoking 81.00 a night. I do not hang upsidedown when I sleep :D and guinness gets along with other dogs. Just a thought..........maybe I should quit thinking. Now to work on sheepiepalooza :sidestep:
4dognight wrote:

That's not what Bob told me! :ghug: :sidestep:
I'm warming up the car right now! Bogie needs to experience the PA turnpike!
Anyone willing to share a room with a newbie? We don't snore but don't light a match near Bogie!
This all sounds like so much fun - what a bummer that I live so far away!!

Does anything ever go on in Ontario????
Don't believe anything Bob tells you, he is Jealous because Guinness likes me better!!!!
I have such a long drive and am trying to get my husband to come with me to keep me company. Otherwise, I'd share a room with someone.
Maybe we should post a list of who is comming, who wants to share a room (I am for the hotel that is closer) and how many rooms we need. I will share a room with a newbie :D Then we can PM or email roomies etc. Can you tell I am excited about this!!!

If you go to the US OES Specialty in Minnesota in September, Maxmm and/or I and a few other people on this forum can help. You can even bring your dog there too.

Sorry I'm confused....you can help start something in ONtario if I go to Minnesota?
I think she meant you can meet in the middle (Minnesota). Being I live about 2 hrs from the show site, I finally get the short drive!!

For mapquesting location, use Stillwater, MN.
It is also my hometown :D - very historic downtown and beautiful river valley. On the St Croix River - which divides MN and WI.
Gotcha!!
Thanks :P
I'll think about it...don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to go, but I'm not sure that it's in the cards since it is quite far.
Hopefully next year!

What part of Ontario are you in? We do do stuff in Michigan at least once a year (I live about 15 minutes from the Windsor border) so perhaps that would work better for you?

Oh me too...me too!!!
Ontario is like a vacuum for dog related fun things!!!
does anyone know what they mean by pet friendly? sometimes that only means "small dogs" which probably leaves us out.
I just called quality inn dogs are allowed in smoking rooms eewwww

I said I did not want my dog smelling like smoke called red roof 2 doubles are 109 a night (no breakfast)

Mandy can you give a couple more choices?? or pm me your address so I can check on other hotels/motels ??

Thanks

I want to know where all these people from Ontario suddenly came from???? We used to be just a handfull..Plese put the province in your profile and be recognized and counted!

I tried to get something together a couple times, but it fizzed out...

Will the famous Michigan groomers come to Ontario??? Hey, wait! Don't we have our own?
Caaaaarll// Where aaare you?
It seems like most hotels only allow dogs in smoking rooms, that's how we usually end up for shows! It's normally not too bad.
I'll send my address over and let you have a run at it. It seems like those are the only 2 hotels in my area that take dogs. Other places will take them but they are downtown.

eew I have severe asthma and it is aggrevated by cigarette smoke - stale or other wise. this may be a problem.
Mandy, when you have time would you let me know which ones downtown I can call? I will not survive 2 nights if I can detect smoke. If its more convenient, PM your address and I will google it. Thank you.

ditto - or just what general area you are in.
Aphrodite, did you check out Ron's directions for posting photos?
http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=1119
First try getting one picture in the your photo album then follow his instructions on how to use a thumbnail for an avatar.
Good luck, I spent some time on it my self till I got it.
I thought all Red Roof Inns allow dogs. There are 2 Red Roofs in Harrisburg, PA area off of the main highway. Do they really push to have you stay in a smoking room? I can't say that I remember any stale cigarette smell in any of the places we stayed in for dog shows. Perhaps that was because there were so many other dogs there?
The Red Roofs don't make you stay in smoking rooms, any of their rooms are dog friendly. It's the hotels that serve breakfast that make you stay in smoking rooms. (The Mandy don't make no breakfast!!)
Guess we have to do red woof inn and bring pop tarts I just need coffee!!!!I have bum knees and when we booked a room for the philly picnic I made it clear I needed a room on the lower level (if you remember not many folks there) when we got there we had a room on the upper level. Mandy may not do breakfast but I don't do stairs!!!!!!
Mandy's hospitality is well known.

I have my room reserved! They had non smoking for a room that allowed Abi. I'm excited. I guess I need to buy tools now. Would a 10" straight and a 7 1/2 curved by Geib at Pet Edge be ok.? Or, do any of you grooming goddesses know where best to invest? I want the scissors to last forever (?). Another words, I know the importance of good scissors. I learned to sew before I learned to write and my "grown up" sciossors are 25-30 yrs old. I guess that makes me kinda old.

I'd love an answer to that as well, but I would like to try out scissors before I buy them so will probably not bring any - I assume there will some available to try out?

I guess we could drum some up!
I have some sossors and brushes and combs and "the Stuff" I will bring my dryer and a dog to practice grooming on :D I will call red roof inn to reserve my room . Guess that is it and decide which wine to bring..these things take time

I also have one, but I have no clue how to use it.
Todd uses it - he loves coffee and makes it even in the heat of summer. I would have no idea how much coffee or water to put in one!
OH MY I guess breakfast will be pop tarts and coke!! How many are attending this workshop????
4dognight wrote:

Um, yeah.
I'll be there with my asst...husband :)
I have an idea! Get Duncan to make the coffee!

Dunkin Donuts that is! :D
Well there is a starbucks not too far away - I was there for the
first time with Mandy actually. I don't recommend going there
on a friday night though - there were about 60 kids there under
13. My first time at an actual starbucks, maybe that was an oddity?

I will bring the coffee maker and the coffee, creamer and
hot cups. I know Mandy has a machine, but I don't know if I can
figure it out. I am such an appliance sped.

I'll bring some baked things too. They always go over well.
I have a tack box, but my stuff isn't the best. Maybe ok for just
learning, but I think you learn better when you have the right
tools.

Shellie
Has everyone decided where they are staying?
Hey all. I'm a pet stylist. I don't have a sheepie (I did have one as a kid), but I was turned on to the forum by Valerie after I groomed her Maggie. I go to as many grooming seminars and contests as possible, but OES are underrepresented in the grooming arena. I'd love to learn show grooming and maybe I can share some of my pet grooming tricks with you all. :D
I've used the photos of the fantastic puppy cut you gave Maggie as the "model" for how I wanted my dogs cut. I gave them to my groomer and she does a pretty good job, but it's never been exactly what you did with Maggie. That was classic. :D

Bummer, but it looks like I'm not going to be able to make it that weekend. It's the same weekend as our Bark in the Park event in Charlotte and TOES has a booth that has to be manned all day. I didn't help with it last year (and our participation was my idea) because it was also the same weekend as Jill & James' wedding, so I was in Las Vegas. If I skipped out on them again this year, they might impeach me.

I'm sure y'all will have a great time. I'll be thinking of ya.
I'll be at the red roof inn, sharing a room with Bogarts mom. I will bring something to snack on too. I am sure we can all go out to dinner . How many are going to be there?
We need a Mousketeer role call to see how many people are attending.
Please sound off everybody and we'll compile a list.
So far:
Maxmm (That would be me!)
VerveUp
Shellie
4dognight
Bogarts Mom
loried
DandAbi + 1
Kerry
JulieL
Shon
DandeePhoebe

Let me know if I missed anyone or if anybody is incorrect on here.
We will be at the Red Roof. Should we see if we have enough people to set up a room of somekind at the Red Roof?
Mandy, Rick will becomming with me. Red Roof is fine with me, which one is it? Anyone have a number for it?
There's a link for the Red Roof on Page 2 of this thread. It has a Corporate Circle, Harrisburg address.

We shouldn't need a room at the hotel, we'll have plenty of space to work at my house so no problems there!
O.K, We stayed at that corporate circle Red Roof when we came down last year , I think there are a bunch of restaurants across the highway, if anyone wanted breakfast. I will make the reservation tonight.
Penn.... That's far... really far.... so as much as I would LOVE to come... think I will have to save my travels for Nationals of 08'. But I will definatly be intrested in one of the tapings... Put me at the top of the list. What good is a groomer who hadn't a clue how to groom for a show?
I have been in FLorida for my Dad's Birthday and just got back to this thread. Anyone staying any place beside the Red Roof Inn? I do need to make a reservation and am (sorry folks) always skepticle about red roof inns.
I made our reservations :D We are at the Red Roof.
Oh, I forgot to log in, its me loried
I think the red roof inn is the closest that allows dogs (not in a smoking room) I would rather stay at a nicer place. If anyone finds one nicer and closer I am game. But hurry there are other events that weekend so rooms may fill up. I am staying fri night and sat night. what day will the group breakfast be???

There is a comfort inn on the river that allows pets. I think it might bebetter than the re roof. any one have any experience with it? It says its less than 4 miles form the house.
Maxmn can you help?/ I can't find it (DUH) but if it allows dogs (in non smoking rooms) is closer, nicer and less expensive (and not on a highway 8O ) maybe we could all change......
I'm all for nicer and cheaper.
4dognight wrote:

Not sure it is cheaper
Well I checked that one was filled up. I made a reservation at this one:

Comfort Inn (PA029)
7744 Linglestown Road , Harrisburg, PA, US, 17112 | Phone: (717) 540-8400 Fax: (717) 540-5553

Said they allowed dogs in nonsmoking rooms and i got a good rate.

Figured I needed to book something soon. It seems a little out of the way but hey its a 4 hour drive what's a feww more miles ?
I stayed at the Harrisburg Red Roof Inn before, it's not that bad!!!! As long as the sheets & bathroom are clean then I'm happy.
VerveUp wrote:

I didn't say it was - but I like clean carpets or floors too :) :P

Actually the rate is about the same and there is breakfast at the comfort inn so it seemed like a good idea - also in case Marley is on overload being by ourselves at the hotel might not be a bad idea. ALthough she is doing so well with her new "program" she has started to try go up to other dogs (and not to eat their faces :o )
OK those of us at red roof do we want to change to the comfort inn where there is breakfast?? How far is this hotel from Mandys I am getting confused I think it will be fun to all stay in one place.....
4dognight wrote:

According to Map Quest it is 4.19 miles or 8 minutes.
OK I switched. Listen folks. I got two queens, non smoking, dog room, there is an indoor pool and breakfast.............175 fri and sat. I have ask bogarts mom if it is OK Any one else switching???? I guess I am just crazy.. red roof gave two full, no guarentee of first level (comfort inn has an elevator too) Thanks kerry :)

Well the pool is being worked on from what I saw - but you are welcome. Just don't blame me if it doesn't work out
ok. I switched too. I liked the breakfast part. Glad we started early.
Yeah abi's mom the more the merrier, kerry if it dosen't work out you have to buy breakfast...........
okay by me - as long as I don't to have to buy breakfast for th edogs - they are anything like mine they eat better than we do :)
Maxmm,

I am planning on making the trip to learn all i can about grooming, not to mention all the fun it sounds like it is going to be. I have a couple of question for you. First I will be flying out of Albuquerque, New Mexico and was wondering the nearest airport to fly into. Also being that I will be traveling from across the U.S. I hope it isnt a problem that I wont be able
to bring my OES girl. I can't wait it sounds like a blast!!!!
Hi!

As was said above, the more the merrier! And we may have a prize for whomever travels the furthest so I think that you could be a shoe in for that!!
The closest airport is Harrisburg International. The airport code is MDT. There are 2 tiny little airports in the area that sometimes come up when you just use Harrisburg. When you get all the details, we should also be able to have someone pick you up if you don't want to rent a car.

I wouldn't worry about not bringing your dog, I think we might have enough to share!

I loved New Mexico when I was there this summer! I was thinking of bringing both my dogs if you want you can borrow Morgan - he is a sweetie. Let me know - I only have one table though.

If you can't get a decent price flying into Harrisburg, look into flying into Philly (PHL). I should be able to accommodate picking you up from the airport if need be. Harrisburg airport is very convenient and very close to Mandy. Philly is 2 hours from Harrisburg.

I love Albuquerque area-hope to retire there...
Hey Everyone. I now have a new username. I was dandeephoebe but for some reason i couldn't log in under this name so I just registered again with a different name. Im now crazyphoebe. Don't know what in the world happen. Anyway thank for the airport info. I will probably be flying into Harrisburg. I haven't bought my ticket yet I'm going to watch the fares and hopefully get a little better price. I appreciate the offers to be picked up at the airport. I will get back with you when I purchase my ticket. I might just be taking you up on the pickup offer.

Hey, just curious will anyone be a Westminster?? My husband and I are going as spectators. I am so excited as this will be my first time. Although it is looking like the weather is going to be snowy and cold.

Glad to hear some of you really like New Mexico.
I am going to be there on Monday and so are one or two others.
I will be there on Monday also. Maybe we can get together while we are there. I really would like to meet some of you. I have a feeling most of you know each other and being I'm new to the forum and live on the other side of the country I do not know any of you. I'm sure we will be very busy but time permitting it would be great.
I think that the probelm was you kept trying to register instead of just logging in!

If you're not logged in you can use the login boxes at the bottom of the main page. Be sure to click the little box that says "log me in automatically" and don't "log out" at the end (unless you're on a library computer, or others in your house come to this site.)
Kerry, Rick and I will be at the red roof , we stayed there last year and it was fine. We went across the street and had breakfast at the Cracker Barrel.
My plans have recently changed and will be flying instead without Abi. Is someone available to pick me up at the airport? I haven't booked yet and could arrange to be there when it is convenient for someone to meet me.
I don't think that it'll be a problem for someone to pick you up. Just book the flight and there's enough of us to work out someone to pick you up on time. Even if we have to wait 6 or 7 hours during delays; right Jill?
I would love some grooming tips! Mr Bojangle is a rare gentleman during my grooming but I think I could learn better techniques for sure.
Hey, I have been off scene for awhile and came back to find this. I would like to come and play too. Sounds like losts of learning and fun.
Well come on down!!
I'll PM you with the address.
Hi There,

My name is Sarah, most of you probably don't know me. I got in touch with Maxmm about attending the grooming event back in March, but with my recent move from MI to VA I have been a little side tracked and have not checked the thread for any updates until today! Is everything still on schedule? Is there a tentative itinerary for the event times (planned meals, grooming sessions, etc)?

Also, I have not booked a room yet. I am fine getting a room on my own, but if someone is looking for someone to share with still, I wouldn't mind saving a little money!

I am still undecided wheter to bring my Onyx or not. She is currently shaved, so I can't practice on her, but she would really like the socialization and to be a part of the party! Something about sheepies, I think they know when they're with other sheepies! I know she would love it, but she is a handfull and doesn't know how to settle down when other dogs are around. I'm worried she might be a pain in the butt!

Just let me know the plan, as of today, i'm planning on attending. Maxmm, can you PM me your address?

Thanks! Looking forward to it!

Sarah and Onyx
Oh vids of both please, :excited: please,:excited: please :excited:

I'm gonna lock this one down since the most current conversation is going here:
