These are great!

I'm a big believer in the simpler, the better the food. I use fresh whenever possible. If I have to use canned (ie: tomatoes) I always just use TOMATOES!.

However, I bought the wrong thing a few weeks ago. I wanted a can of diced tomatoes, and bought diced tomatoes with green pepper and onions. OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!! Are these wonderful! I never in a million years would have bought these on purpose! Purity of fresh and all!

Since then, I've bought (and used) tomatoes with HOT chilis, tomatoes with garlic, onions and basil, tomatoes with...oh who know what?! This is a wonderful invention!

Lots of tomato canning companies make these...so I don't really recommend one over the other. All I know, is that its wonderful not to have to dice onions and green peppers all the time! The real and true flavor is there!

Don't be afraid to try them....my trying them was a mistake....but it turned out great! Who says, you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

Arf arf

I agree.....I have used these canned tomatoes and they are great and add a wonderful flavor. I especially like to use them for added flavor in my crockpot meals. Sheesh.....between Ron's post about the brisket he's preparing...and now this thread about garlic...onion...basil tomatoes....I'm getting hungry myself. :-)
I can my own, but make them with all the stuff in them. Depending on what is ready in the garden, I add peppers (bell, banana and assorted hot ones), onions, and my own herbs that I grow. Some are sauce, some I make into salsa.

I also add a bit of vinegar, sugar, lemon and lime juice and of course fresh pressed garlic.

That way, I have this yummy base for chili, spaghetti, lasagna and other stuff. Hard work when I am making it, but so enjoyable the rest of the year. :D
Wow! I'm so jealous! I wish I could have a nice garden, but living in a townhome, with very little garden space, and a husband that hogs it, I'm reduced to buying stuff!

I bet yours is extra delicious!
Deborah...

What are your favorite ways/recipes to use the various canned tomato products?
Just be careful to read the ingredients if you are concerned about added sugar. Many of these have sugar added, as do many of the plain tomatoes 8O

I bet you could do some, even where you live. I have a friend who has a small garden, and supplements what she needs from our local farmer's market.
I have a low round pot (about 16 inches across) that I grow my herbs in. I found when I planted them out in the gargen I was too lazy to go get them. With them in a pot on the patio, I just need to step outside and cut them. It works great!
I usually do herbs in a pot on the patio, too. It's easy & fun and usually sheepie proof. :P

Yeah, no -

Morgan thinks I plant in pots so he doesn't have to stretch his head down to eat :P

I planted some new shrubs in the yard this fall ( agreat time to plant at a lower cost cause everything up here goes on sale!) . I no longer have any miniature roses planted (apparently they taste good when slightly frozen) and I found one of the new shrubs from under the pine tree in a pile of snow where he dropped it after deciding it didn't taste good.

Last summer they ate eggplant and squash and tomatoes right off the plants! I wonder what I can try so we get the veggies this summer?
Deb--cherry tomatoes grow really well in pots and they're fun too because there are so many that appear. Lettuce also is really easy and quick to grow--arugula is great for this. Also, herbs are easy and don't take up a lot of space.

Yep cherry (and grape) tomatoes one of Morgan favorite - look these are right at mouth level- treats!
Amanda, I use the onion, green pepper tomatoes in spagetti sauce. And I've used the jalapeno tomatoes for hoppin' john (with black eyed peas), and for a change, I sometimes used the basil, garlic tomatoes with the onion and green pepper for pasta.

I've also used it the green pepper and onion mixed in my meatloaf.

There are tons of ways to use these!
I gave my husband a copper fire pit on wrought iron stand for "his" deck. He liked it so much he drilled holes in the bowl and in the spring/summer I grow my herbs in the fire pit. Looks great it's up high and just outside the back door.

Sounds like Morgan belongs here! I agree, pots are perfect for picking...picking by the dogs. Pole beans, tomatoes, herbs (basil breath 8O ), peppers, etc.
We bought tomato seedlings from Seed Savers last year, mostly heirloom. Barely got any tomatoes because it was so hot and dry last summer and we weren't always around to water. Probably a good thing since the smell of tomatoes makes me gag and I do the canning. I ended up making salsa with 1/2 tomatoes and 1/2 a variety of peppers including jalapeno and habanero. The stuff was so hot I had to stir it with a yardstick for fear if I got any closer I'd be blinded :D

Anybody have a recipe for zucchini relish that doesn't have green/red peppers but does have dill? I had a really great one but can't find it.

DandAbi, great idea! I just use regular pots or strawberry jars.....boring.
