Shaving to stop the itchies?

Barney is getting a bath tomorrow and if it weren't for his itching problem, we wouldn't be shaving him at this point. But do you think that shaving him will help him at all? We're going to the vet next week, but the bath could be scheduled before the vet was available...what do you all think?

I don't see the connection other than if his hair is short he can scratch the skin easier :)
I am a big fan of shaved sheepies, after having two that suffered from allergies. I find that it is much easier to stay on top of dermatological issues when you can get to the skin.

Oscar suffers from food allergies, and yeast overgrowth, both of which manifest in skin conditions. He needs constant management to ensure that he doesn't get hot spots or infections, which in our case means frequent baths with special shampoos. It's so much easier to manage when he is shaved, not to mention that it's so much easier to spot something that could turn into a big problem if left unchecked.

Actually, Oscar was kept in full coat until he was almost a year old, when a spider bite caused an enormously gruesome abcess on his leg. I certainly would have seen it much earlier if he'd been shaved, so he has been "bald" (puppy cut) ever since. :)

Pepsi doesn't chew his front legs at all, if his coat is under 3 inches.
We are at around 4 inches now and I keep finding pieces of his leg fur on the floor where he chews.
He is so weird. It's almost as if it itches him when it's longer than a certain length. :?
I know shaving Pepsi would do the trick with him and I will probaby end up doing just that in the next couple of weeks.
I will share with you what our vet recommended.

She said to bath once a month because toxins are shed through the skin and it's very healthy and important to cleanse them away.

She recommends shaving at least once a year. Probably she recommended more but I have selective hearing because we like to keep the long coat even though they look adorable shaved too.

Give sweet Barney a big :ghug: from us. We hope he stops itching!
Laci has skin allergys too. My vet recommended Benydryl for her. Works for us.....
We had itchies a few times after Ollie was clipped. He had no allergies or itching normally. It was like the clipping irritated his skin. He didn't actually have a razor burn - nothing was visible to me. Something just made him super itchy afterwards. This only happened occasionally, and he was to the same groomer all the time. We bathed him - thinking it may be the little clipped pieces bothering him or something.
ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I shave Tasker at odd times but ALWAYS because of the itching and biting. When the hair is long he pulls and bites and it makes a mess. For some reason clipping him down helps to break the cycle.

I just noticed last night that he is working on a spot on his back, if it doesn't improve QUICKLY we will get the clippers out.

Last night I was up three times with him vomiting, he has HUGE hairballs in his vomit so I know he has been licking and chewing.
Aww, poor Tasker!

Thanks for all the advice! We decided not to shave him this time, but we did buy a cone for him to wear until we can get to the vet tomorrow. And it has worked great so far. It's clear so it makes me feel like it's not as restricting as some and he hasn't been able to chew at all because of it. I'm hoping that the medicated shampoo and bath yesterday will help to sort of cleanse the skin and then the cone will help to break him of the habit. I know he chews because it itches, but then chewing makes it more itchy and the cycle goes on. So at least this'll mean he'll have a day or two of not chewing...

Oh, and he was a GOOD boy at the groomers. i love going in and seeing him be groomed while other dogs are being groomed too because the other groomers are telling their dogs not to bite them and Barney is just sitting there, smiling away! His only problem is that he likes to lounge while getting beautiful, but sometimes you have to stand!
Does anyone know what Shelby might have? Inside her ear flap & outside the ear canal she has 6 scabs that fall of & form again. Underneath it is red & has very tiny (pinhead size) water blisters. She also has one scab on the other ear & one on her neck. She is not scratching.
Corky has one outside the ear canal. Fergus has none.
They don't eat the same kind of food.
Do you think it is urgent b/c we are away & would rather take her to our own vet.
I did call our vet & left a vm. He will probably call me tomorrow.
So, Barns got back from the vet. First of all, the people there said that usually the OES they see are bad tempered at the vet (they said that the owners all say how wonderful their OES is around other people and dogs EXCEPT when they come to the vet), but that Barney was awesome and wonderful and so sweet! Good boy!

So, his itchies are a skin infection. He was given a cortisone shot and told to up his benedryl intake. He's supposed to keep him cone on for a little while longer until the skin gets less itchy. As far as I know they don't have a reason for the problem, just that it pops up. So, at least we have some sort of answer and hopefully the shot will make him feel better fast (like it did last time).
barney,

you want me to come over and scratch your back??

love,
panda
Panda,

My previous sheepie Max would get an skin infection anytime he was scratched the least bit. I ended up keeping him short haired and using a rubber brush on him.
I know it's not the same reason but George used to itch his skin alll the time but we got him some dry skin tablets and he gets one a day.

They are chicken flavoured so he just eats it and thinks they are a treat

They have made a huge difference now he doesn't scratch at all
