tylan for tear stains

Hello to all, I have been reading your threads for a while now and have learned a great deal. I appreciate the efforts of all those that contribute to the forum. I have a 6 month old female OES named Abigail...Abi for short. I learned from an experienced OES owner at a show that he sometimes used Tylan for tear stains. I've read that it is the main ingredient in Angel Eyes. I'm not sure if that is true or not. Buying Tylan is cheaper, in the long run, than Angel Eyes. I have tried soooo many products... all topical. Tylan is, as you all know, an antibiotic. Has anyone tried Tylan for tear stains :?:
Respond to this topic here on forum.oes.org
Yep, and many people on a maltese board I go to use just the main ingred. I've had nothing but success with it. Absolutely 0 tear stains with regular use.

While I was worried about the antibiotic part (using daily)... after just 2 wks, I now only use it once every 2-3 wks (once and half the amount). I could even go longer inbetween times, but either way... two different vets here said the amount used should be fine. Some people do not like it for that reason which is understandable, but my maltese gets some pretty nasty tear stains.
How much do you give them? Abi weighs 42 lbs and is 6 mths. Somewhere I read 1/8 t once a day sprinkled on food. Somewhere else I read 1/4 t once a day. How much did you give your OES and at the time how much did they weigh? So that I understand correctly you gave them tylan not angel eyes...right? Thank you for responding. :D
I only give it to my maltese and it's angel eyes...not tylan itself. ...and with that, I gave 1/8th a tsp a day at first. she's only 6lbs. I'd look on the back of the bottle you get.

Just wanted to reiterate that she has severe tear stains and I had already tried EVERYTHING else on the market including eye envy.

for angel eyes, you give 1 tsp for 12+ lbs.
Thank you. Her breeder said that once she is no longer teething she will no longer have problems with tear stains. Her teeth are all finally in and her right eye no longer stains. I was preparing in the event the left eye continues to tear and stain. Is it an uncommon problem for OES to have tear stains?
I order Tylan 40 from some online place in California, MUCH cheaper than Angel eyes. But like Mrs. J I only use it for my Maltese so I really don't know what the dose for a large dog would be.

I used it daily til the tear stains cleared then started decreasing to bid weekly then weekly andnow I just start it up if I notice a bit of reddness.

I think if you "Google" Tylan 40 you will find several online sellers.
Thank you for responding. Since it's an antibiotic I worried about giving it for cosmetic reasons. If her left eye doesn't start clearing up soon, I will use a minimal amount until I see a difference. I've tried Diamond Eye, and Eye Envy... just to name a few. I also tried a teaspoon of vinegar in a gallon of water for 3 months now (to no avail or that is why her right eye is clear). The teething theory (as the jaws are swelling for new teeth they restrict tear ducts, after teething the swelling reduces and the ducts are opened again) might be correct in Abi's case, if not, I'll try the Tylan. I appreciate this forum and those that replied. Thank you.
hi im new so sort of lost on this one our pup has slightly red eyes and lines of stain running from the corner of her eyes down towards her mouth which im guessing you are calling tear stains she is only 12 weeks old should i be trying the drops you are recommending on here or is she a bit young it doesnt look pretty though with the stains near her eyes , thank you this forum is so so helpfull and its making our life with the new one so much better for us and her :D
I've tried many topical products (inexpensive to expensive). None have really worked. The one product that does seem to work, Angel Eyes, is primarily an antibiotic. Many people that show their dogs recommend the product. I was apprehensive since it is an antibiotic. You could read up on it at their website. Angel Eyes is mainly used by Maltese owners. Since the Maltese are small, the amount given isn't that much. However, if you go by weight, the proper amount for a large dog would get very expensive. Tylan or Tylosin is the anitbiotic and main ingredient in Angel Eyes. It is much cheaper to buy just the antibiotic for a large dog. If you search the Angel Eyes site they discuss how old, the amount, and what is in their product. My own rule of thumb is anything topical I use common sense, anything given orally I call my vet. I have an ultra conservative vet. If you decide to price Tylan, I found that our feed store (I don't know if the UK uses that term...where you buy large animal food- horses, pigs,..) could order it for me and I wouldn't pay the shipping.
we have a 12 week pup with bad tear stains is it safe for her and how much angle eyes would she need is there any other way to cure the problem
According to the Angel Eyes site: the product is safe for puppies 6 weeks and older. One teaspoon, for dogs 12# or more, sprinkled daily over their food.

Since OES are large and would require more product due to body weight, I wanted to find out about using the main ingredient- tylosin or Tylan (which is an antibiotic) which is cheaper.

Another possible remedy is 1 teaspon of apple cider vinegar added to 1 gallon of water. The issue is they can not drink any other water -ever. Only the vinegar water when traveling and visiting homes with other dogs. This also mean they can not drink out of the commode :) . My vet told me that vinegar water is perfectly safe and would reduce the likelyhood of bladder infections. Here's the trick...you have to wait to get new hair growth to see if it is working. It will not alter the already stained hair. I hope this helps.
any info tylan , where to buy just wanna remove it , but obviously dont wanna affect the dogs health in any way
I would NOT use Tylan (or any associated products such as Angel Eyes) on a pup under a year old. Tear staining in many pups is a by product of teething and perfectly natural. There is no point in giving an antibiotic that will continue to recur until teething is done.

If after 1 year the tear staining remains I would first consult with a Vet, it could be a blocked tear duct and inside out eyelash or a yeast infection. I would use Tylan only after other problems have been ruled out.
thanks for that :) i knew it was part of teething but i just needed to know if i should try any do something about it i will leave her well alone now her health comes first , thanks for the top advice once again :D
Thank you tasker's mom. Our breeder had explained the connection between teething and tear stains. That explains why her right eye is no longer staining. She is 6 mths old and I think all of her teeth are in now. The left eye is still staining. She had congectivitis and the vet checked for a clogged tear duct or any eye lashes in the way. Negative for both. When do they stop teething? I will wait another couple of months to see if the left eye clears up. I was just doing my research in the event I did resort to trying something oral. I was hoping to show her in Feb and was wondering if the judges would fault her for the stains. I've never shown a dog before. Does anyone know?
No, you wouldn't get faulted for regular tear stains. If there is an abnormal amount of staining so that it appeared your dog was unwell or uncared for, that would be the point where judges would start to have a problem with it.
Thank you Maxamm. Also, if you can refer me to a site, book, or person that can give me an idea for gooming a pup for show I would most appreciate it. :)
There really is no site or book that is going to do much to help you. You really need a person to physically show you what to do. I'll ask around and see who's down in your area. There are no OESCA mentors listed in Georgia.
You can check out this link and see if there's anybody reasonable close to you: http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... ORLIST.HTM

Was your breeder able to give you any help in this area? They may have some contacts that would be good for you too.
You can always go to shows in your area and try to do some cold meetings which are always hard. If you should need to do that, you'll want to talk to the people after they show. It's always a little crazy before hand. But you should definitely sit back and watch while they do what they do before hand!
Thanks, Maxmm. I have read all that I can find and am ready for hands on. My breeder is on the list of mentors but she lives in Washington State. I went to our local show and the OES that was entered (only one) did all the grooming in his vehicle-mobile home. Since you mentioned the mentors, I looked at the list again and tried one in FL. Maybe I'll get a response. Do you have Mandeville's "The Complete Old English Sheepdog"? I will use those methods if I have to resort to that but it was written in the '70's and might be a bit out of date. I might just give it a try if I can find someone to show me the handler's responsiblity and point out some tricks.

We need some mentors in NY!
I know someone in New York who may help you but he's 3 hours from me so I'm not sure how close he is to you. I'll get his info when I get home and PM you.
I just got the email back where I tried to email the mentor in FL. Wrong address was the message. I'll wait to see if your source might have any ideas.

Did you e-mail Edy? If she was your bounceback, use her e-mail from this page:

http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... lorida.htm

That mentor list is a little out of date in terms of contact info, I think.
Thank you butterscotch. I will email Edy.
She's a member here as well but doesn't post all the time so you may have trouble tracking her down through the forum. If you don't get a response to your e-mail, one of our members (Moplover) here has one of her dogs and Mandy has pretty much everyone's phone number so I'll bet she could hook you up.
Thank you Butterscotch. I tried the link for Edy's email again. If that doesn't work I will contact Mandy (Moplover) to see if she has the phone number.
That's close, Dee. But Moplover is Emily and Maxmm is Mandy. Either one of them could help you get in touch with Edy, though. :D
