How much water is OK?

Hi everyone! I have a sheepie here that can't seem to get enough water. She wants to drink all the time, and I mean all the time. I've had her checked by the vet and everything checks out OK. She has a fairly large water bowl and will lick it dry X2 and immediately try to get into the bathroom to get to the toilet for more water. Just wondering if anyone else here has a really thirsty baby at their house too and if I should be concerned? (Gotta love the really loud burps I'm getting from this little habit of hers too!) lol

I am curious too!! Heart, my 7 month old doesn't drink THAT much...but she drinks and drinks and then throws up all the water .....I have to keep telling her "that's enff!!" As long as I redirect her in between, she seems to keep it down........but she does drink alot!!!
I think Sheepies are thirsty dogs. Although young dogs will just drink for the sake of it. Our summer drinks about one big bowl a day although she does drink out of puddles in the garden as well.
Tucker also drinks quite a bit and then will gag it back up a little while later.

He's so charming, really.

Sorry, to say it but I'm so happy I'm not the only one with these thoughts! :D Boni drinks a lot too. We were talking about this the other day in the chatroom and Dairymaid said that he might just like the taste of it.

Since we live in Chicago I realized he drinks a lot but maybe it's because we live on the 29th floor. When we have a yard maybe I just don't see how many times I just open the back door to let them out.

But here, we still have to tell him "enough" when he is close to finish a bowl of water.

Oh, I also give him ice instead. He loves it!
If a dog has been checked out by a vet and there are no underlying issues I would not limit the amount of water. Except possibly in the case of a young pup you are trying to house break then it is common practice to limit night time water.

My water "bowl" is a 5 gal bucket. It gets emptied, cleaned and refilled every morning. Some mornings it is down to 1/2 half but it is not uncommon to have it almost empty.
When Barney was a puppy, he was water CRAZY. He too would drink whatever was in front of him and would drink until he puked. We bought this really cute water cooler looking thing that meant he'd always have fresh water pouring into his bowl. We had to get rid of that! We resorted to bringing the water out and putting it away so he didn't have access to it all the time (there were potty training issues too).

I can't remember how old he was, but we got to a point when we were able to leave the water out at all times. I want to say he was like 15 or 18 months old...maybe not that old, I can't remember.

We didn't do anything specific other than take the water away for a while. He seemed to outgrow it. Now he'll usually drink a decent amount of water and every once in a while we'll have to tell him to breathe, but he's much better.
Water is critical to a dog's metabolism...and our's too. So if the vet says he's OK and he is house trained, let him have what he needs. Mine are big drinkers......one even has specific drinking times e.g. 6 p.m., outside bowl only. Great when that bowl is frozen....... we have to defrost it for her, she waits patiently.

Ah!!! Bless her heart! :hearts:
Gus Gus has a "drinking problem" as well. He has learned that if we say "Enough!" (usually we have to say it a couple times before he hears us over his sucking water) he will stop long enough to find something else to do. We usually fill his bowl with about an inch and a half or so to avoid the puking issue we just refill it several times a night so he can't drink too much, but gets little bits at a time. Gus Gus also LOVES ice cubes. Everytime we open the freezer (we have a bottom freezer that pulls out) he wants to be handed an ice cube! What a sweetheart he is!
Morgan has to try to empty every water bowl he sees- tough when we put the water down at night for bedtime (if we don't they get us up at 4 for a drink!) He too knows enough and will stop drinking and settle down for the night, although some nights he will try more than once.
Thanks for all the responses. Guess I just have a thirsty sheepie. :)
