Pearl was bell trained...

as with all training...repetition, repetition, repetition...and one day...it will click.

The faster you can get her out after she tings the bell the faster she will associate the bell with OUT! I have found, timing is everything!!  Good luck!
Maybe you can get one of those Whisper2000 things for yourself so you could have superhuman hearing?
Like everyone else said, repetition is the key, as well as throwing a party when she is successful. With Tucker, we used to ring the bell ourselves every time WE went outside, showing him the connection and what it would look and sound like. We praised the slight, quiet nudgings at first, but we progressively ignored them until he had it right, then we'd only answer it if he did it just so. Now he's to the point where if he REALLY needs to go out, he'll ring it and if we don't respond right away, even by calling out, "Outside Tucker? Good boy!" from the other half of the house as we come to the door, he keeps ringing progressively louder, as if to say, "HELLO?! I need to go OUT here!"

Maybe you could try a game, too. What if you took the bell off the door and held it in front of puppy. When she pays attention to it or gets close to it, Give her tons of affection and lots of "Outside? Outside? Very good!" as you rush to the door and open it. She doesn't necessarily need to go out yet, just understand that the bell means outside. Play this game until she is tapping/ringing the bell just like you want her to. Then play it a few times a day closer and closer to the actual door, until you are able to hang it up. She might get it sooner than you think. While Tucker was learning this he did a lot of experimentation, which was annoying since we had to open it EVERY time he rang in order to strengthen the association, and he would ring it up to10-15 times an hour sometimes. But after a few weeks he had it down pat, and now, at 9 months of age, he is absolutely flawless and has been for about 6 months. Just keep working at it!!!!
thanks were still gonna keep at it ur right repetition is the key so I hope she starts doing it more on her own and not just when i tell her to. Im also taking her paw to tap it harder so that she gets it has to be louder. Wish us luck:) Im just glad at least she gets to touch the thing!
aww today a set back :( I was in another room didnt hear a bell really dont think she did it if she did again it was too silent but she pooon the floor then she has a thing were she will come to my door and bark at me to clean it up:( So i took her to the crate to clean it up so she couldnt see me, because I think that is why she barks cause she use to see me clean it up so we dont do that now. But i dunno if shes gonna get this, were still trying. The only thing she does do is on command Touch it or if Im standing at the door with the leash shell touch it I never see her physically do it herself without me standing over her:(
Have you tried the game I suggested?
she doesnt find it amusing she turns her back to it, she is more afraid of it then anything i dunno why the bell im using is one of her old toy balls that has a bell inside of it. :( so far not good. were still trying!
okay so shes ringing it again now not afraid of it we had to play games with it for a week or so to get her to feel comfrotable with it, so now we hung it back up and shes ringing it to go potty IF im at the door w command , if im not she just goes on the floor. we still need ideas if u got any on how I can get her to do it without me hanging over her? let me know.
Do YOU ring it every time you open the door? And when you played the games did you have her ring it and then open the door?? IT sounds like she knows the comman but does not understand the association.
I dont think she associates it either how can i fix this, because she will hit it when i say the command or when im standing at the door to go out, but when im not at the door she will go in the house and never ring it. Any ideas on how to fix this, shes already poo twice today and i caught her made her ring it and went out but i dunno shes just not getting it.
Hi there!
Sorry to hear the bell training isn't going too well. It is very tricky and requires a ton of patience and persistence.

Have you heard of or practiced any clicker training? It is a WONDERFUL thing, in my opinion, to teach dogs specific behaviours. If you would like to read up on it there is a great website: www.clickertraining.com. It was invaluable to me when I started training Tucker.

In addition, this is a link from that website that offers some help on the bell training: http://www.clickertraining.com/node/1171

Hope this helps some!!! Remember, patience and persistence is KEY!
Are you having her paw it or just hit it with her nose?
well shes already clicker trained I dont see how I can use the clicker to help me with the bell shell just associate it with food. And yes she paws it.
I think I messed up by teaching her on cue with the touch command. But according to that site provided that is exactly how they did it in the video. I dunno what I am going to do to get her to associate it with outside when im not just standing over her. Well just keep at it but were not getting anywhere today she pooed in the hosue again I caught her and we had to do the bell again. My dog is 8 mths and still isnt potty trained!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you read the article that I posted the link to? It outlined how using the clicker shapes the behaviour, starting from what she's currently doing and working towards what you'd like her to do. It also talks about eliminating (or better yet, never using) a cue for this because you want her ringing it on her terms and not yours.

Give the article a little read and let me know if you find it useful...
I wouldn't have her paw it. It's just one more thing that she has to remember to get the point across. Just ring the bell, let her out, ring the bell, let her out. Forget about pawing it or anything. She'll start making the association and figure what way she wants to ring it. The idea is just that you get the noise so it definitely doesn't have to be anything fancy!
were going to go back to the crate and shes gonna spend more time in there with supervised outings, and just going to that door with the bell a lot more often. Hope this might help!!
