Question about health certification...

So when a breeder says they have had the hips/eyes, etc. checked and certified, does/should that mean the OFA (this is for the US)? Is there another place that would be considered credible that they could have had these things evaluated? Otherwise, is it just a breeder saying they had it done and probably just had their local vet do a check?

To have hips/eyes "Certified", in the USA it is through OFA for hips and CERF for eyes. Here in Canada they are certified through OVC for the hips and CERF for the eyes. If they were only x-rayed at the vets and not sent to either OFA or OVC then they were not certified. A breeder should be able to proudly show you the certificates for all their breeding dogs. Its not enough in my opinion to only have the vet look at them. Its only a few extra dollars to have the xrays sent to the professionals to be evaluated and certified.
I know an long time Irish Setter breeder who only Penn Hips her dogs vs OFA because she thinks it is more accurate. A lot of docs who OFA hips don't sedate a dog, so I would hope they would re-do x-rays if a dog moves vs. trying to guess.

Blueshire, I'm not sure it is that easy to just have x-rays sent to an OFA doc to just sign off on them if they didn't do the x-ray themselves. I recently went through and eye cerf here at a private place near me, and the OFA doc had an emergency and wasn't able to make the appointment. Even though I was already there, another doc in his practice that was qualified to do the test (he was from Europe but not OFA certified in US) remorsefully would not do it because he was not certified.
I'm not a pro but when we got Boni I asked our vet in Boston if we could do an X-ray and have an OFA cert. He said he can do the x-ray, tell me how his hips are but if I want a certificate he would have to send it to OFA.

This is how it is done here in Canada. My vet takes the x-rays. They are then sent to either OFA or OVC for evaluation. I then receive the Certification Certificate in the mail, and my vet also receives the report. What I meant was that anyone can take their dog to the vet for x-rays and just have their vet give his/her opinion and tell everyone their dogs hips are fine. Its that extra step in having your vet send the x-rays to either OFA or OVC to have them graded and certified. Its an additional fee for OFA/OVC and the courier charges.

Exactly. And here's the kicker as far as OFA is concerned: all you need it the parents registered names or registration numbers and you can check for yourself to see if their hip x-rays (and elbows, CERF, BAER, thyroid and Cardiac for that matter -for OES) have been submitted. Piece of cake.

Yes, it is wonderfull that OFA has a website where you can check results and make sure the breeder is telling the truth about the health clearances.

Unfortunately, here in Canada, OVC (Ontario Veterinary College) does not have a website where you can check. You can call with a Certificate number to check and make sure it is legit.

I just recently had my girl Virginia's hips certified through OFA instead of OVC for that reason...I like that you can pull up the results online (hers came back Excellent :D ) I have also done PennHip once (my vet started doing the PennHip so we did both PennHip and OVC on Sadie) We were told we had bragging right son Sadies PennHip scores.
Amber is right. I proudly will give in my puppy packets copies of eye cerf papers, ofa/ovc/bva/penn hip papers, and any other certification papers that have been done. I also include pedigree's, Titles from other countries, a whole different packet of informatin on many different items, how to puppy/kitten proof your home, how to feed, health papers for that puppy with all of its weights, shots, wormings anything that would help the new vet of that pup when it goes to its new home along with the phone number name & address of my vet for any questions.

According to the vets around here in Colorado, (and at CSU Vet School) it doesn't matter if the dogs hips are done under annesthesia or not. Hips are good or they aren't........ (it is going to depend upon the 3 people that are reading them at OFA. I have resubmitted xrays once and they were given a diferent reading).......

Personally i prefer to do them without annesthesia as anytime you put a dog (as well as a human) under you never know what may happen. I have had a problem with a dog and annes. in the past. I am not willing to take that chance again.

When I am going to do hip xrays i ask around to other breeders in our area as to who is the better Vet to take them to to be done. Vet's have reputations on who is good at doing xrays and who isn't.
