Indiana Breeder

Has anyone had any experience with Shumate's OES in Anderson, IN? Found their name in the paper today and trying to do some research. I tried doing a search here, but it didn't show anything.

Thanks gang.

If you do a search under Google with "Shumate OES" you will find their web site. On their home page they say "all our dogs are part of our family and OFA certified, DNA tested and AKC registered. " I did a quick search under OFA's web site and the only OES that come up under that name were tested in 1993. http://www.offa.org/ Could be that they are registered as different kennel names but you should definitely be asking since they say they do the testing.

Also, Dr Shumate is not listed as a member of the Old English Sheepdog Club of America in the 06-07 Membership Printed Roster. I would wonder why someone who has been breeding for over 20 years would not want to be a part of the national breed club.

I would also ask about any health guarantees.

Plus they quote the code of ethics from Breeders.net listed on their page. (I will refrain from releasing any puppy until it is at least seven (7) weeks old, or eight 8 weeks old if the puppy is to be shipped. ) Breeders should not let puppies go home before 8 weeks where Breeder.net code of ethics say it's okay for them to go home at 7. That extra week is really important bonding time. Plus Breeders.net is really just a classified ad web site. I'm not sure how they would go about following up on people who sign their code of ethics.
I have read this kennels sales agreement/guarantee. He will only guarantee the hips IF the vet recommends euthanasia. Another item in his sales contract that is a big red flag in my opinion...and I quote..."This sale is final and seller will not accept return of the dog for any reason other than stated above" (which is if the dog must be euthanised due to hip dysplasia)

Another red flag...he apparently has lied that the parents of his pups are OFA certified....even says they are graded "excellent". Ask to see these OFA papers. He also boasts "National Champions" in the family tree. This bugs me to no avail. Boy breeders who don't show sure like to boast the hard work of others to sell their pups!! Champion bloodlines means absolutely nothing!! Just an impressive sales slogan to add in there. Tell me the PARENTS are Champions with all their health certifications and that will impress me!
We have a OES from Schumate. She is 8 years old. She is a sweetie pie, and we have had no problems with her. We have been happy! Just my 2 cents.
I do not know anything about this breeder, but just want to warn you about selecting a good and ethical breeder. It may seem easier, cheaper, and faster to go through a local breeder, but trust me, in the end it nips you in the butt. Medical expenses for genetic diseases and de-worming can be VERY expensive, and quickly add up to more than that "expensive" puppy.
I agree entirely with Amber (Blueshire). There are many red flags.

I believe that Jere Marder of Lambluv OES moved to Indiana. She is a legend, as are her dogs.
