California Breeders

Can any of you recommend a reputable and reasonably affordable breeder in California, ideally, Northern California?

I know, I know, "You get what you pay for" : )

Thanks again to all of you

Try the OESCA breeders list. I know there are one or two in Northern Calif.
Thank you Wendy.
I have contacted all of the breeders on the Ca. OESCA website. I was looking for further direction as I am going to have to choose one on them and stick with it. I just wanted insight.

Check the website for Londonaire OES. I will pm you the email. Ali told me they are very nice. They may be able to help you find the right breeder. I don't know if they still breed, or if they have any pups now.
OOOOOOOOOO

Awesome! I haven't been on this site. Something new for me to obsess over. Will follow all the leads.

Thanks,
Cheryl
I would suggest that you contact Blu Mtn. (Pam Henry) or Cottonwood OES (DeeDee Caswell). Both breed exceptional quality dogs, great temperaments. I would suggest not going with Blue Panda kennels (Dianne Mckee, Lita Long). While there dogs are of fairly good quality, there contracts are extremely binding and favor them .

Good luck and happy puppy hunting.
check out Tina Dougan For Pause OES...Great, very repuable!!
Guest why don't you join the list and sign in so we can see just WHO you are with such great information and recommendations?
DeeDee Caswell with Cottonwood Kennels has been great though she's located in southern California. Years of selective breeding experience and both she and her husband are AKC approved judges. Be forewarned that she doesn't accept deposits though. It can drive a buyer nuts  but it's truly in the best interest of the puppies because no one is committed to buying OR selling. She doesn't produce a lot of puppies each year so you have to be willing to be patient. DeeDee may also be able to recommend other breeders if you need help.

Good luck with your search!
It is difficult to try to figure out how to chose which person to buy a puppy from, I was in a similar position in September.

I own a For-Pause puppy and a friend owns a Cottonwood baby. Both are wonderful. I live in Southern California and both these breeders are here. Both women have 30 + years in the breed. For-Pause has been a wonderful mentor and fabulous resource and my friend feels the same way about Cottonwood. Neither has young puppies at the moment, though they may have other dogs should you be interested in something older.

I don't know the other OESCA breeders in CA, though I am certainly familiar with their names. That shouldn't be construed as a judgment, but rather my own geographical limitation! :D I have certainly noted a number of champions in their kennels.

Generally speaking, if you use the OESCA Breeder Referral list you can't go wrong. Start there and then see who has what you are looking for: who has puppies? If they don't have puppies now, when will they have one in a time frame that works for you? Do you want to pick your puppy up or will it be shipped? Talk to the breeders you are considering and see if there is a match. They will have a number of questions for you and you should have many for them. Ask about all the conditions of sale, highlights and issues of their lines and describe just how the new pup will fit into your home.

Go to some of the local dog shows (http://www.akc.org/events/search/) and chat with the OES owners there. They can often direct you to someone, since the OES community in CA (and everywhere else, it would seem!) is very small.

Here is a link to the 2008 Top 25 Qualifiers for the National Championships: http://www.akc.org/nationalchampionship/index.cfm?section=top25&type=conf&display This may or may not make a bit of difference to you. But many kudos to each and everyone of them. Some of them are posters here and may be able to offer you guidance if you contact them through this site's Private Messaging function. You can also back link to this and find the champions in previous years.

There are other people not members of the OESCA who breed and sell puppies. I would opt for an OESCA breeder since they have an ethics standard. I have heard too many horror stories in other breeds about the puppy delivered was not the puppy that was promised, health issues, etc. While the OESCA has no legal standing over their members, they can suspend membership. And that is more than you are going to get in any other situation.

Please, do your own homework. Your new baby will be part of your life for at least the next ten years, hopefully longer!

Best of luck and please post puppy pictures!

Yahooooooooo a new puppy... lucky you!
