Why us again?

one month ago the motor in our van went, (a rod went through it) could not be fixed, so we bought another car.

Last night Richard called and told me the car would not start. He had lights ect. So we called AAA and they towed the car to the garage we use.

They just called and it is the starter and also front wheel bearings are bad.
This is going to cost $1555.00

This is the last of our savings.
I had high hopes for this new year and here it is only the third, and it is starting again. So I guess we really much be on the s ht list again

How much can we take before I crack.

That REALLY stinks.... I hope you guys manage as I know the holiday season alone tends to make money tight. :( Plus, a new dog. Just stay positive about getting through this.
Wow, that seems like an awful lot of money for a starter and a bearings.
Maybe you should call around to see if you can get it done cheaper?
I'm sorry!

Does your state have lemon laws?
Deana, have you thought about contacting a financial adviser? Someone who can help you plan for the future so when things happen, you'll be better prepared? Perhaps having a professional to give you advice could be very beneficial and you may wind up with fewer disasters and upsets.
that does seem like a lot of money.... those things do not cost alot, the service $ must be high. I have to say I am glad my hub can do that stuff. I had a friend that needed and $35.00 block heater put in and it cost her $380.00

Very good idea!
Ok first off the starter was 358.00 it has to be heavy duty. We have a ford exployer V8. Both front wheels needed complete rebuilding, its 4x4 and they had to realign all 4 tires rotation.

Some of what I ment was since Fergie died 2 yrs ago, Richard has been laid off 3 times, we lost both our cars, every penny went into keeping the house, I have been hurt 3 times with Darcy, so all these things keep building up. I have not even told you all of the things. We are still trying to keep the house. Everyday is a battle. AND I AM TIRED.

J you said something about Xmas draing us. We never had Xmas this yr. We stayed home alone.

OK I am done with poor me. I just needed to vent.
Deana
oes mommy just hang in there, things can be hard and scary, my hub had been off work for 1 1/2 years and hopefully going back soon. I had been very lucky with my homebased business to make ends meet... but no debt except for house... now if I did not have to pay for POWER and HEAT... things would be easier and had to sale newer van (payments) for used and again glad that Dave can fix our Auto's... older and common ones with cheap parts... we learnt that also the hard way. So long year ya I do know what you mean... house is # one

I agree, planning is absolutely necessary. However, sometimes life grabs you by the throat like a Michael Vick dog, and doesn't let go.

Unfortunately, those that have lost a job don't have the money to plan with. If people were judicious with their funds before losing an income source, savings and investments go away very fast when the income source isn't there for an extended period of time.

I've been in that situation. It's ugly and the worst part is, keeping your spirits up while you dig yourself out of the situation.

I have friends that have been the perfect planners. All of their finances were in order. They were paying for all 3 children in college and life was good. They both lost their jobs within 4 months of each other. They had two years of funds behind them and figured they would be OK. She found a low paying job and he's still looking 20 months later. Needless to say, they are looking into the jaws of reality. I stopped to visit with them recently and they told me, "Frankly, we would have been better off financially if one of us had died." 8O

You just never know what's coming at you.

Yeah, but imagine where they'd be if they weren't planners. Thank goodness that they did have money put away.

I know often times things happen fast but I think, sometimes, you have to learn to adjust your lifestyle to match what you can afford and when things happen that can help you, make wise decisions to make sure that your future is as secure as it can be. I know many people who spend like they make six figures but, in reality, they make close to nothing. I had a friend that received a large inheritance and he blew it all nickel diming himself on junk and has nothing to show for it now. The only thing he even has left from all that money is a 15 year old car. It's still a cool car, but nonetheless, the only thing left. Last I heard, he was having trouble getting a loan to buy a house. It makes me sad for him but he wouldn't listen to reason when everyone told him to put some money away. Now he's struggling when he didn't have to. He could've definitely used someone to seriously advise him on all that money. He'd be in a much better place now.
Deanna, did you buy the car from a dealer for from a private ad? If you bought it from a dealer there are lemon laws. If all else fails the dealer should at least pay half. I know that when things go bad it seems everything goes bad at the same time. I've been there as most of us have, you just have to lift your chin and keep on chugging away. It may take awhile but things do get better!!!
Just want to send some of these :ghug: :ghug:

I hope things get better and they will

In 14 weeks, the money they had saved is gonzo. Then they will be in the same drastic position, not enough money to save the house, and the market so bad, they can't sell it. Sh t happens even with the best of plans. :(
I lost you somewhere. Didn't you say they had "2 years of funds behind them", "she found a low paying job" and "he's still looking 20 months later", then you say their funds were exhausted in 14 weeks.

I'm very confused!

Sorry to be confounding. He (the major wage earner) lost his job a little over 20 months ago. She lost her job several months before him. She found a job last month that pays half of her former salary.

The 2 years of funds they had set aside has approximately 14, possibly 16 weeks before it's exhausted and they begin having difficulty meeting their commitments. Her salary isn't enough to make a difference in such a short time.
I see, 14 more weeks.

Well, at least they had 2 years to try. :(
Maybe they could get the kids to come home and help out. Hey, it's a last ditch kind of thing.

Nothing is foolproof but 2 years of savings is pretty darn good. Most people so well prepared won't have 2 simultaneous long term periods of unemployment.

When Joan and I returned from our trip it took her quite a long time to get a job and it was for less than she was earning before our trip. I still haven't returned to work, so I guess I've been out of work since April 2002, almost 6 years.
