Chicago OnionLoaf Fest! Jan. 13

Everyone is invited to get together, January 13th (Sunday) at 1:00pm at Hackney's in Lake Zurich, IL.

Hackney's is on route 12, just north of 22.

Please let me know if you are coming so we have an idea of how many people will be there. When Paula and I were there, the waitress told us large groups always come in without reservations, and they can accomidate them, but it will be nice to know who's coming.

Oh yea...dogs are not invited since this is a public restaurant  .

Count me in.

If it were summer, I bet we could bring dogs. They could herd the geese and swans!
Yep, we could. Then I could drink a lot and Pirate could drive home!

Paula, correct me if I'm wrong, but to give everyone some idea of cost, don't you think about $20 per person would be pretty correct (this is without alcohol)?
Definitely count me in and add one for my Mom. I'll touch base with her as I'd really like her to meet you. She'd fit right in :D

Stacy, I'll really look forward to meeting her, too!!! I'm glad she's coming.

Do you think Steve will come? He and Tony can be grumpy together
Deborah, I would say $20 a person without alcohol would be about correct. A burger/sandwich is about $9, then there is the onion loaf and tax and tip. I have a feeling we are going to convert a lot of people into onion load addicts!

Crabby people (i.e., men) will have to sit at another table. Maybe the bar?????
Hee hee....***IF*** we can even get them there!

Jan Gutherie will joining us, too!! Lets try to get a good turnout for this!

ONION LOAF RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just noticed I typed "onion loaD" instead of "loaf." This was not a Freudian slip!
I think onion "load" is quite approprate!

(I hope this isn't scaring anyone away!)
Deborah, Paula count me in!!!! Onion LOAD does not scare me away! :go:

I'm also bringing Charlie but he said if it's going to be only women - especially who are as crazy about Sheepies as I am  - then he will drop me off and go to a bar to watch football.

If they are coming and are like Charlie then they can all be crabby at the bar. ;)
I can't attend darn it.

Do post a picture of the FAMOUS onion Loaf, you really have me intrigued with that culinary delight.

No one answered my question when you and Paula were par taking of the delight last time, HOW IS THE BREATH after?
Lisa, I don't know how my breath smelled after our last onion loaf, and I didn't care! I wasn't going to kiss anyone anyway. You'llh ave to ask Tony about Deborah's breath.
If Charlie can be crabby, he'll get along just fine with Tony. Tony is the quinessential crumodgeon (sp?).

I don't think you get bad breath from onion loaf, since is full cooked. I think your breath gets really good...well, if you like the smell of onion loaf, that is!
I'm sure there is a television in the bar, so the men can watch whatever game is on that day while the women eat onion loaf and have a good time!
Oh yea, if Tony and Charlie will be there then I'll tell Steve that he's coming. He's not grumpy for others...just me :(
I can't wait! Yea, Kata hasn't moved yet!

Mom said she'll come weather permitting  With her knee bursitis acting up she acts like she's 90 instead of 62. Once she gets out, she has a lot of fun. I guess I know where I get my homebody personality from.

I need to get out of my neighbor's kids' birthday party. We're supposed to be there at 3:30. I'll just tell them we'll drop by late with gifts.
Good plan Stacy. Lunch with grown-ups is waaaay more fun than a birthday party with screaming children.

I just invited my co-worker Peggy who was at SheepieFest!4. Hope she can join us.

Lisa, book a flight now and get up here!
Melissa and I will be there :D
I'm really excited about it! I hope we get a nice, big group together!
Who's in?

Deborah
Paula
Melissa
Amanda
Stacy
Stacy's mom
Winston's mom
Boni's mom

I know I'm forgetting LOADS of people.
And....

Jan Gutherie.

I just posted a note about it on the "other" list...so we may (or may not) have people from there join us.

Ya never know!

Oh yea...I think Kathi is coming too!
Kathi McB???? That would be great!

How important this is to me: I told my mother I would be visiting her on Saturday instead of our usual Sunday. She said why not Sunday and I said "I have a very special luncheon on Sunday!"
Paula! That is so sweet!! When is your mom's birthday?

Yes, Kathi McB! I better send her an email to remind her!
Here is a link to Hackney's menu. If you keep clicking the menu, it will move you to the next page.

Apparently, we are the only ones who call the "french fried onion rings" an "onion loaf"!

They have lots of choices, but I always end up with the Hackneyburger. All of their food is delicious.

I really hope Heather will join us. They do have vegetarian choices!

Please accept my apoligies that I can't come as there are no suitable flights from Europe, seriously though I hope you have a lovely time on Sunday.

Cheers from all at Tikk-ti-boo :clappurple:
But they could overnite express us all a few loads, er loaves..........
I check that out, and they only ship burgers..no loads, ah loaves.

Paula, you may call me Kata.  And Charlie's coming too and will stay at the bar watching football if other husbands come too...
Hope you ladies all have a wonderful time at your luncheon.. take lots of pictures!!!

Here in Nova Scotia, we call the onion loaf a "Blooming Onion".

Brenda
Dudley and Murphy
Ya know, even though they told us big groups show up without reservations, I think I'll give them a call, and tell them we will probably be about 10 people.

I think it would be easier to size down, than up.

Whatcha think?
It never hurts to send out an alert. 10 should be about right, hopefully there will be more!
Did I miss the time we should meet for lunch? Mom and Steve are attending as well:D Can't wait to see everyone!
Maybe...its 1pm. I'm looking forward to meeting your mom, Stacy!
:yay: I'm so excited!!! Charlie is happy that Steve is going to be there. Deborah, do you know if they are going to show the football game there?
I actually think they may have a few tvs in the bar. I'm sure it won't be a problem getting them to turn the game on!

My Tony is working all day Saturday, so he may not join us...he may stay home and be a couch potato!
Is he still Grumpy Tony?
He's a curmudgeon!!!!! (but a good curmudgeon).
Hee hee...He is a curmudgeon! He's always been a curmudgeon, but from not smoking he turned into an a**hole curmudgeon!!!!!

But, I'm happy to report, he is turning around now. Its two weeks and I think he's passed the really icky personality stage.

I will be there on Sunday. It will be a lot of fun.
And Jim wants to come too.

See you all on Sunday!

Mary
:clappurple: :go: :cheer:
Mary, Jim is more than welcome. He can sit with us in the dining rom or with the group in the bar watching sports. But the bar group has to get their own onion loaf!
All you onionloafers:
remember - we need PICTURES!!!
I've got my camera all charged up and ready to go!

And demystify the GREAT ONION LOAF after all the build up? :lmt: Maybe if enough scotch's or (insert cocktail of choice) are consumed :D
Maybe we submit pictures of US without the onion loaf. And a picture of the empty onion loaf plate!
You mean, the SEVERAL empty onion loaf dishes...and us grinning?
How about before, during and after??
Ok I called and made a reservation for approximately 10 people 8) at 1:00 pm, in the name of Deborah.

Woo Hoo!

"in the name of Deborah" - almost has the same ring to it as "The Mandy"

Hmmm...maybe I should be known as "The Deborah" (like The Donald!)
The Deborah!

I've got my camera ready too! How warm is this place? Just wondering what to wear...
Its regular restaurant warm. I'm probably wearing a sweater and jeans, and maybe my new Uggs!!!!
Oh Uggs! I just love the Uggs I have. They just keep your feet so warm when it is really cold out and then you can wear them inside and your feet don't sweat in them. They are just great.
Yes, definately wear them.

Mary
Mary, I got them from Ebay! They just came today! Pirate's having a ball sniffing the box!

You wear yours too Sunday!
What are Uggs? Me no speak English good.
Uggs are boots made in Australia. They are sheepskin, lined in sheep fleece, and very comfortable, and keep your feet very warm!

http://www.uggaustralia.com/

I have the chestnut, tall classics, but there are many, many styles.
Daughter Lisa has Ugg boots - the tall black ones. She has them on with her tights and dress. It was her flying home outfit.

Can't really see the boots... :(

Not a good idea......that could have bad ramifications for your hair

Spoken from a fellow UGG wearer. Make sure to scotchguard them if they are a light color. I have pink ones that are now dirty, was too lazy to scotchguard them. But I still love them.

Have a fun time! I'm so jealous!
I have the tall beige Uggs and I've worn them in the snow and they have gotten dirty and covered with salt. But I tried washing them with a towel and some hand soap and they came clean. Just make sure you let them dry completely after you wash them.
I love my Uggs. My daughter told me not to buy them because all the teenage girls wear them. But I didn't listen to her and I am happy I got them. They are just wonderful. I think they are the best boot you can wear in the cold and then you can keep them on inside and your feet so cozy in them.

Mary
Ugg boots and tracky daks real cosy and oh so warm.

The main part of my grung look at home in winter

Thanks, great idea. Do you think it matters what brand soap? Did you use much water? How long did it take for them to dry?

Traky Daks, is that a brand of shoe or is that what you call an athletic shoe? Just love the sayings of you guys in other countries. :D
I don't think it matters what soap you use. Just don't use anything that bleach in it. I have used dish soap or ivory bar soap on mine. I make a wash cloth wet and then put some soap on the cloth and rub it on the boot. My boots have come clean.
And then I let mine dry by the heating vent on the floor if Winston will leave them there. He likes those boots and loves to carry them around the house.

Hey you guys call them "Sweat Pants" Our saying for them sounds so much better & cuter.
Trakey daks for sweat pants? I get the traky part, like from "track" i.e., running, but what the heck is dak? Some sort of rhyming slang?????

Do you call running shoes/sneakers, etc? Trainers? Plimsoles?

And how did a thread about a lunch turn into Aussie clothing slang???

This is one of the things I love about this forum, it is amazing how the threads can be changed so easily. :D :D :D
I've always liked Uggs, but thought I was too old for them. Then my sister-in-law got a pair for Christmas and when she unwrapped them, the "little Debbie" in me silently cried "I WANT THOSE, TOO!"

All the stores were sold out, even the Uggs website..so I went to Ebay and found them.

My husband gave me the scotchgard lecture already, and I'm going to do that today, so I can wear them tomorrow.
I want Uggs.... I want plenty of pictures of the Onionfest... and I wanted to be there.... ( One of my nieces couldn't get away this weekend- and we really want to make it an "ALL the GIRLS" get-a- way" ) If we come later can we do this all again??? :D

HAVE FUN!!!!!!!
You bet we can do it again!!!!!

We have girl power! We can do anything we want! :cheer:
I love these boots! They look so nice, comfy and warm... :D I will check some out properly tomorrow.

Thanks for the explanations too... :D
Hi All! Steve won't be joining us tomorrow; however, Mom and I will definitely be there by 1:00. If anyone needs a ride from BG, please PM with your phone number. See you Sunday!

Forget about working out, you might spend the rest of the day on the toilet :D My Mom is really looking forward to this!
I can't wait for this lunch. I wonder how many onion loafs we are going to order and eat
I know I am looking forward to eating some. :D
See you all later!

Mary
I'm not going to make it, my parents are having a family lunch at 2. Have fun without me everyone! Have a drink for me!
We had a great time! I do believe 4 complete onyum loads were consumed along with at least 3 bowls of fries! Deborah asked the manager about bringing the dogs sometime so we are tentatively planning an outing in the "after the mud" season. I will separhead to take the pressure off the Pearl Mesta of oes.org, Deborah.
:go: We had a fantastic time!!!!!!! I'm so happy to meet all of you! :D I've uploaded the pictures but still waiting for admin...
Mom and I had a wonderful time today! It was so nice to catch up with everyone :D
I borrowed one of Kata's pictures so you can see the famous onionloaf:

That's Paula and Stacy's mom.

It was such a nice afternoon. Even though we are all relatively strangers, we have so much in common and probably could have chattered away for hours and hours more!

It will be fun to go there in the summer with the pups!
hey paula...in that picture, you remind me of paula dean....lol....so happy with that darn onion loaf.....

That's what I was thinking too!

Looks like you guys had fun! You mention the amount of onion loaf consumed...how about glasses of scotch? 8)
I had 1 1/2. Paula swiped 1/2 of my second. I don't know if she had any. I know a few people were drinking beer, too.
Oh what fun!!! Paula-- you DO look like Paula Deen--- so happy and excited about the Onion loaf ( which looks YUMMY by the way) Glad all of you had a good time!

I am coming to the next one- with or without family members!!!!

:) :) :)
The "Smoke-Free Paula", you mean!?!

By the way, the onion loaf looks a little tipsy in that shot... or was it SFP?
if you look carefully, the plate is tipped, however that top of the loaf is perfectly paralle (sp?) to the table!

I have some pics to upload too, just haven't gotten around to it. It was a really fun afternoon. Lots of laughing and eating!

Poor Kata's husband, Charlie hid in the bar!
