Help me! Tony is quitting smoking, and I lose my mind!

:excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited:

Tony smokes 10-15 cigars a day...and INHALES! His mom had 3 mini strokes Friday night, and of course that scared him, so today, he has decided to quit smoking (which I am all for!)

BUT! HE IS DRIVING ME NUTS! He is walking around grumbling, frowning, and beind sarcastic. I may just help him quit, by killing him!!!! He is using the gum, but he waits til he gets a bad craving to chew. I tried to explain, the first couple days, you chew NOT to get cravings..and all he said was...WHO MADE YOU THE EXPERT!?

Later I told him, I was really proud of him, and he said, "WHY? I COULD START SMOKING AGAIN ANY SECOND!!!!" I said I was proud he wasn't smoking right at that moment.

He's all hyper...he's been to Home Depot 4 times today! Which to me, is a blessing!!!!

Please, pray for my sanity and my marriage!!!!!

EEK!

10-15 cigars a day??? that is insane!

Maybe baking him some more cookies so he has something to chew on will help?
Does Chantix work for cigars too?

One of my young coworkers is taking it now and she said it helps way more than the gum or patch did. She did have several of the nasty side effects listed in the 1st couple weeks and almost stopped it. Now they are gone and she is thrilled.

And I hope Tony's mom is doing OK after the TIA's. They really are a wakeup call.
Tim says he was a jerk for the first week when he quit smoking. I'd recommend alcohol - for you! Good luck!
When he's not at Home Depot, you should be.....or elsewhere, anywhere. Have plenty of food for him so he can't gripe, "There's nothing to eat."

If you can get him outside, walking and grumbling, that will help his mood (yeah right and I believe in the Tooth Fairy."

Maybe the patch could help him as well as the gum. He is going to feel worse, not better, for awhile while his body detoxes.....which you are allowed to mention just once a day or risk having your head bit off. For sanity you might want to keep a diary of his rants so maybe someday you can share them with him........when he's clean and smoke free ....and can laugh at him self.
I have tons of food in the house. I've bought all of his favorites, and we received lots of candy for Christmas.

Yes, I have scotch in hand. Push comes to shove, I can throw it at him

He won't go to a Doc. to get an Rx for the Chantix. I wish he would.

We are going out to dinner with family tonight, so I think he will have to behave. Oh I hope he will behave!!!!

He's off tomorrow, and I work, so he can wallow in his misery by himself!

Thanks for asking about his mom. She is doing better today. They want to run a couple more tests tomorrow before they can think about releasing her. She is a heavy smoker too...so, I suspect she's going through withdrawal as well (she's in St. Louis). They did give her the patch while she's in the hospital.
Wish you lots of luck and patience dealing with Tony.
Chantix only works if you follow the directions. Hubby still smokes, but only 3 cigs a day. Should be at zero a day, but he wants to do it HIS WAY. Good luck......
Oh my have fun. Been there done that and throwing the bottle at him, may help

:go: Me too.
Tell Tony to snap out of it! As us former smokers know, it's not the physical withdrawal that hurts, but the emotional withdrawal. He just needs to take it one day, one hour, or even one minute at a time. Too bad he won't get Chantix because it really worked for me. Turned off my mental fixation on smoking. However, I recently read that people who quit smoking because of something bad (like me with heart palpations) tend to stay quit as opposed to those who quit because it's New Year's, etc. So hopefully Tony will see what happened to his mom as a negative effect of smoking.

Deborah, you can always take the dogs for a walk or go shopping when Tony hits maximum curmudgeon-ness.
oooh, good luck to Tony! I'm sorry of the circumstances that inspired him to quit, but it's awesome he's trying.

I think you should threaten to buy a new pair of shoes each time he's snippy with you. That might put him in check a little!
Chantix works for ANY form of tobacco (even smokeless).

10-15 cigars is a HUGE number, hard to even imagine!!!!!!!!!!! Do you have to smell all that cigar smoke???????????? BLECH!

Good luck to him, keep him busy.

The most important part of any smoking cessation program is PLANNING, planning what you will do when tempted, planning what to do to keep your mind off tobacco. So help him come up with some good PLANS!!!!!!!!

 Hang in there Deb.

By the way, I am sorry about your mother-in-law.
Tell him the EXPERT (it's what I do for a living) says CHEW THE GUM REGULARLY, don't wait for a craving. The whole point of nicotine replacement is to keep your blood level high enough that you don't have the physical craving.

The majority of people who use NRT do it incorrectly.
Hey, as usual I am into the positive reinforcement.....Anytime that he has any length of time where he is NOT crabby you need to "reward" him......

I'm glad your MIL is doing better. What a fright!! It's good that it has inspired Tony to quit, but gosh, it's going to be hard on you both for awhile. Good luck to you both!
He doesn't like the gum. He said it gives him stomach cramps. I think he's just feeling icky from quitting.

Yes...I smell those stinky cigars all the time. He smokes outside, but his coat, clothes, hair and breath...well..stink!

Went to dinner last night, and he didn't say a word. I felt like everyone was thinking our marriage is in trouble, so I explained his situation. It took all my will power not to kick him under the table!

He went to bed very early (thank goodness!). This morning he seems a little better. And...his breath didn't smell like old cigars. He's starting the coughing thing. I told him, that was a very good thing.

I'm working today and he is at home. I am really proud of him, I know how hard it was for me to quit. I'll give him an extra hug tonight...I just hope he doesn't tell not to talk to him again!
ehehehe....and i dont mean that badly...really...

he sounds JUST like brian when he quits....brian really should spend 2 weeks on a deserted island while trying to quit....

i say just keep out of his way and actually not to comment too much about how well he is doing....that used to make brian really mad that i was just bringing it up again....men are such babies.......

hugs to you!

I dunno, have you ever seen a woman with a broken fingernail? How do you think they'd do wounded, crawling through mud to save the lives of their fallen comrades?

/sarcastic defense against feminist prattle ;)

They'd do quite well, thank you. They'd drag the fallen to safety, clean and dress everone's wounds, and make them a nice hot supper, and then, when everyone was safe and fed, they go get a manicure to repair their nails.
Then they guy would squeeze one out and then go back to the football game.
Ah Ron....come back Ron! Earth is calling!!!
Which reminds me of the old Christmas Story......

Do you know what would have happened if there had been three WISE WOMEN instead of MEN?

They would have asked for directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby, cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and brought disposable diapers as gifts!
WOMEN RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just because some/lots of guys whine when they have a head cold doesn't mean they would be bad at tolerating the severe pain of childbirth.

Women tend to cry over what guys would think are silly things, and on the job they tend to cry over personal and personnel issues more. Shall I make judgements about their abilities to lead corporations?
Ut oh, Ron...them is fightin' words!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(I'm guessing you are not a Hillary supporter!)
Isn't it time for Ron to go into his male brain nothing box?

Mostly because we were never taught to handle anger and frustration by pnching out our best friend then clapping him on the back and having a few drinks with him after the game :)

Ugh! I hope this passes quickly!
