Vista---Pro's and Con's please!

The boys got laptops for Christmas...with Vista installed...

There are some cute neat little programs, but seems to have a lot of unnecessary stuff running that drains the CPU and causes crashes...

Does anyone have Vista, and if so, any comments?

I have vista and was told by the person at Dell who was takingt he information to replace my hard drive (after about 12 uses) to configure it for performance and it would not crash (I think the default is appearance).

I really only use my laptop for email, the web and a few games so I have had no problems.
Did you transfer files? Not being a computer guru, I found this:

Most XP programs will not work under Vista unless you install the Vista drivers for that program. The only way to get a crash-free Vista is to do a VIRGIN load and then also do a VIRGIN load of the other programs, and then go onto the manufacturers web site and download the Vista drivers for that program.

We have Vista on the computer not on the laptop and I love it and miss it when I don't have it. We've had it for nearly a year now and haven't had a problem with it, so I can't say anything bad about it (yet). :D

Love Mine. You do have to watch which programs you try and install. All new computers come with Vista, so there is not much choice. If you are computer handy, you can uninstall the programs that came with the laptop that you don't want and/or stop them from starting up. Vista comes with a program that tells you if the program you are installing is compatable. Alot of the software companies have patches for Vista too. Good Luck. Any questions, go to Circuit City. They have people there who know alot about computers.
We had it and hated it...pulled it off all that came with it.
My parents have it on their new computer. Their printer which was maybe two months old had software and driver conflicts with Vista. HP was sending out new software with drivers for it.
Mom was annoyed when she bought a few new games for the new computer which claimed to have been compatible with Vista and they were not. The computer kept freezing up.
My husband is a systems manager and he took it off our pc's. They release new software without testing it thoroughly and this is what happens. I remember hearing itunes wasn't compatable with Vista, but I don't know if they ever fixed it. If my husband says he isn't ready to use it, I accept it.
My daughter bought a laptop last summer for school. It was required for her classes and Vista was mandatory.
My older son also bought the same model for his classes. Neither of them have had any issues running Vista.

The younger son bought a very expensive laptop - the best available options as of last summer. He also runs Vista, with no issues. He does have degrees in computer science and computer programming, so he is our go-to guy for all computer stuff. He may have tweaked some things to increase the speed.......
I have it on my new computer. Can't see the scrol bars or form boxes, very hard on the eyes
Interesting discussion. Son Travis is getting a new computer from Dell any day (Christmas present paid in half by mom and dad). It has Vista on it. I am not a computer person, so I will have to ask him what he thinks of it. I know he is aware it comes with it.
My sons have the Vista on there's more for media stuff etc. I got a new computer from Dell a few months back and had XP loaded on it as Vista was not needed. And I only just got use to XP so I really did not want Vista and try to work out what the Heck!!!!! 8O
Where's the little emoticon that throws up? That would be my opinion of it.
We did some testing with it at work and all the IT people hated it, nothing but problems.
I am a Mac person who has gone to "the dark side" and bought a PC for school because most of the word is PC. I did a powerpoint presentation on my Mac that would change when I tried to run it from a thumb drive. We ended up doing it from an e-mail. I bought the PC thinking it will be simpler to just us a PC to start with. Anyway it has Vista on it and I don't even know enough to love it or hate it. I don't even know what Vista is supposed to do (other than crash a lot). I know it froze the first time I tried to use the PC. Not an awespicious start, to say the least.
I will say that my computer smart son has noticed that Vista automatically controls a few things that you adjustable in XP. The son figures that the next version will put the options back in and tout it as a new feature.
I've been using Vista for about 6 months, only problem I found is the HP printer thing, but if I found it just works slightly differently, the controls are in a different place if that makes sense?!
Also, copy & paste options only work if you open with internet explorer and not Firefox. iTunes works fine, but I can't get any file sharing to work. Oh, and I can't open, watch dvds or look at files on cd, it just doesn't register them, I think there is a setting I need to change.
I am rubbish with computers but find my way around Vista OK, it's not alot different in that respect.
Thanks, all.

These are brand new laptops, so the Vista installed was pure....and there were no other programs on the laptops to mess it up.

Over the past couple days my younger son has been working at it, and made some adjustments and now LOVES Vista...LOL

The older son is taking a bit longer to come around, has spoken to some of his geek buds, and is going to give it some time....He likes Lenix, so may just partition the laptop and run both.

I am glad I got all these responses to go over with them.......Good and bad...so they could see how other people fel about it.

Thanks folks!
