Diahrrah in a blizzard

All,

Ralph is have bouts of the runs/diahrreah today. He's holding it in, but when he goes, it just shoots out and is all runny. We've given him two does of Pepto and pumpkin, but no help yet.

We just checked and have no rice and we're in a blizzard so can't get to the store.

Any suggestions? An immodium maybe?

Thanks!

PS - he's acting fine and eating what we give him.
I have used imodium in the past and it seems to help....
I've used Immodium as well but, be careful. Though it's most common in collies, some of the herding breeds have an ivermectin sensitivity that can be fatal if you're snowed in and can't get treatment. Unless you've given it before and you know your dog isn't sensitive, this may not be the time to try it (If you've given Heartgard in the past, you should be fine-- it also contains ivermectin). Keep up with the pepto and I'd stop food altogether for at least 12 hours just kind of let his system rebalance itself. I hope things get better.
We use cherry flavored Kaopectate if any of the pack have the runs... thankfully it hasn't been needed for a couple of years now. :phew: You have to give them a lot compared to Immodium but mine all like the flavor so it's pretty easy to dose them. Check with the vet on call just to be sure is appropriate and ask for a dosage amount usually based on weight.

I hope he's feeling better soon.
Immodium makes pills ;)

Pepto? Doesn't it have an aspirin base or something? I seem to remember a need to be careful with it.
The pack of 4 then 5 had what was probably undiagnosed Girardia about 3 years ago- numerous cultures that always came back as high bacteria levels only. Treated with Metronidazole and Immodium tablets off and on over the course of about a year. Switched vets, treated entire pack with Panacure and that ended the problem. So we've had lots of experience with poopy dog butts

We've gotten the best/fastest results with cherry Kaopectate... but everyone has their favorite.
No fod, no water for 24 hours, then plain water to see how they react to that.

Then on to the ground beef and rice sdiet for a couple of days.

I never give mine anything OTC, but my vet always insist we do no food or water for a day before he gives them a script to stop it.
Egads! I had to read this when I saw the title of your post..poor you...poor Ralphie. Just wanted to offer my sympathies and hope he's feeling better soon.

The snow stopped an hour or two ago and it is quite beautiful with the nearly full moon. Ralph is doing better, but I wish he felt better. This is his first real snow storm since we've had him (late July) and he really loved running in the snow this afternoon. He didn't like the wind blowing in his face, but then who does? :?

If he's better tomorrow we'll take him to the dog park so he can really run. After we drive up and back to Kansas City to pick up Karen's aunt whose plane landed just as the storm hit there. We started up (normally 2 hours each way), but turned around because it was white out conditions and I had to stop every 10 miles to knock the ice off my wipers. And there were still idiots driving 60+mph. GRRRR..... But we made it back and enjoyed a warm day at home.
Sunday afternoon update. It is a beautiful day, lots of snow on the ground, but passable roads. And.....TA-DA....we have solid poops today. Thanks for the advice. One of the first stops we made was the store for rice!

Ralph also got up to the park today and really romped in the snow. I'll post pictures soon.
