Hello from the UK

G'day all!
I'm an Aussie, married to a Scot, living in England :)
How's that for international LOL

We've got a 18 month old labrador and we're starting to research breeds for our next dog - we were set on another gundog, until we met an OES on a walk a few weeks ago and now hubby is convinced they'd be perfect for us....

So I've joined up to learn more about OES and what it's like to live with them, and hopefully to start making some contacts for good breeders and learning about the breed standard etc...

Does anyone here also have a lab, and if so how would you compare the two breeds?

Looking forward to chatting to you all more!

Welcome from St. Louis
Welcome to the forum!

I don't have a lab, but my good friend and co-worker has two and we're constantly comparing notes. Sheepies and Labs are very different.

I promise, though, if you hang out here long, you'll find out all you ever wanted to know (and more!) about life with a sheepdog. :D
i dont know what a lab and sheepie are like to live with together...but one of pandas good friends is a yellow lab and they play wonderfully together.....albeit, non stop rough and tumble play....but still all play...

Welcome from Alaska! :D

We have 2 Sheepies, and our late boy Otis was a Lab/Great Dane cross, also my parents have 2 Labs. In our experience, the biggest differences are :

1: Grooming! So much more time/work with an OES!

2: Labs are much more "object" oriented...toys, fetching etc...OES want PEOPLE. They are much less independent, and far more snuggly.

The similarities are, both are energetic (although I think Labs are more so), both are very playful (my sheepies and my parents Labs get along great :D ) and both are very puppy-like well into old age.

Good luck with your research!
Welcome from St. Louis!!!! Can't wait to see pictures!!! (We all LOVE pictures!!!)
G'day Mate from your old homeland.

Welcome to the forum, here is a link for OES Clubs in the UK. If you do decide on an OES then do purchase one through a reputable breeder referred by the clubs.

Totally different to Labs more bouncy  Coat wise high maintenance compared to a lab.

Some things to ask a breeder when looking for an OES pup.
1. Are the parents hip scored through the BVA
2. Do the parents have eye clearance certificates

Best wishes in your research and decision on wether the breed is for you. :D
Thanks everyone for all your replies, much appreciated!
And Lisa, yes I know all about health testing and how to locate a good breeder, but thanks for the tips.

Look forward to getting to know you all & learning more about this fab breed!
